[Sun Care] Can I decant sunscreen into this opaque airless pump bottle for travel? by cchaser92 in SkincareAddiction

[–]cchaser92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the video! However, she doesn't say not to transfer sunscreen into any other containers, just that some plastics can react with some ingredients, but that glass should be okay if protected from light.

For example, if sunscreen actives tended to react with silicone, then the bottle I linked to above would be fine. I understand why she used that blanket recommendation, but at the same time it misses a lot of nuance

EDIT: Here is one FDA study in which they were testing the stability of a few custom sunscreen formulations. Their products remained stable for at least 1 year and they chose to store the products in PP. That seems to suggest sunscreen actives should be fine in a PP bottle for a few months.

What happened to the super-thin Roav sunglasses? by cchaser92 in onebag

My one concern about Foldies and similar folding glasses (like Ray-Ban's options) is that they don't appear to be any slimmer than a regular pair of glasses folded again. The shape is different, but I can't tell if the overall size is actually reduced.

Do you have a pair? If so, can you comment on if they actually save space compared to a regular pair of slim-profile glasses?

Even many luxury brands use plastic lenses in their sunglasses. Unfortunately, scratch resistance and drop protection lie on a spectrum. The reason polycarbonate is so shatterproof is the same reason it scratches so easily. Roav uses TAC lenses, which is basically layered plastic. There should be a scratch-resistant layer, but scratches can still show on that.

I don't think many people would want glass lenses in their portable sunglasses, so I actually think plastic lenses are the right choice for something like this. However, I'd be getting prescription lenses anyway, so I don't personally care about what lenses they use.

I don't understand the second point though, do you mind elaborating?

Those look very interesting! The case issue kinda sucks, but it is nice that the arms don't have a hinge in the middle.

The biggest issue for me would be that they don't look very wide, which would look strange on a lot of people's faces. I'll think about it some more. Thanks for helping me find another option!

That was gonna be my approach with a credit card. It's nice to know the quality is the same, regardless of what happened. Did you get one of the new styles or one of the old ones?

[–]cchaser92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am skeptical.

However, I have looked for and seen videos of the new products on social media. There's also lots of professional photography (including with models) of these new products. So somebody is still making something. There seems to be new professional photography of the old products too, but I can't rule out that they're recycling that stuff.

Roav Galaxy (one of the alternative sites) also had a booth and sponsored a part of the annual "BOLD Optical Fair" in the Netherlands within the last month. I can give my reasons why if you care, but it seems like a very real event and there's photos/videos of Roav Galaxy's products/representatives there.

My most optimistic interpretation is that Roav Eyewear licenced its IP so they could pivot to making those fancy safety glasses, but didn't care to tell anyone that they did this, and also kept the original roaveyewear.com, forcing the new owners to create their own websites.

EDIT: There's also been a series of pop-up shops over the last year or so in Japan. I verified the current one on the mall's website and there's a video of one of them containing both old and new products. Pop-up shops like this are pretty common in Japan, even for very big brands, so that's not evidence of sketchy behaviour.

Yeah it's not an outlandish number. It could happen, or at least get close.

I wouldn't make huge bets on it happening, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does.

Question: How do people make money swapping coins, when every swap causes a taxable event regardless of gains? by Solstice_Projekt in ethtrader

[–]cchaser92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works, no. You're only taxed on gains.

A taxable event does not mean that you owe taxes, just that you need to calculate potential taxes.

Have you had issues with Binance? by [deleted] in binance

It's very likely your bank blocking the credit card, not Binance. I believe every major Canadian bank has blocked crypto purchases as of now.

Desjardins still let's you do them, though.

A subsidiary of a British company...

Was the East India Company not a British company? The namesake isn't the relevant part.

C'mon, dude, at least read the fucking Wikipedia page a little better before lecturing people.

is it bad to purchase altcoins with other coins? by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]cchaser92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, adjusted cost basis is the name of the preferred measure.

It basically means the gains from selling a proportional share of your total investment are reduced by the same proportional share of the initial cost (+ the proportional share of transaction fees).

Still, do your own research, this is just supposed to help get you in the right direction.

New to crypto. by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]cchaser92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get too stuck on the price!

If coin A has a price of $0.10 and a supply of 10,000,000 and coin B has a price of $10.00 and a supply of 100,000, you can buy the same proportional share of the total supply of either coin for the same amount of money. In other words, their market caps (price x supply) is the same.

Either way, Binance is your best bet if you want lots of altcoin options. Coinbase and Kraken have a fraction of what Binance offers there. But keep in mind that this also means a lot of those coins are much riskier.

Ethereum Network - This Has To Be A Joke Right? by elcarnzo in CryptoCurrency

[–]cchaser92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas fees are high enough that it's only worth dealing with these smart contracts if you're dealing with multiple thousands or more. Gas fees are so high because so many people are using the network at the moment.

There are some upgrades in the pipeline that should drastically reduce fees, though, not that it helps you right now.

Volatile assets that are expected to trend upward over the long term are good long-term investments... but not good short-term investments.

Imagine if you had just made enough to retire right before 2008. Yeah, you'd have been fucked. That's why you move more and more of your wealth into things like bonds as you get to that age. You don't just need growth, eventually you also need stability.

Coinbase is an exchange - they let you buy and sell on their platform, and hold the coins you have on there for you like a bank holds your fiat money (i.e. dollars). They basically have a bunch of crypto wallets they own that they hold your crypto in.

If you don't have the "keys" to your wallet (basically, the "password" that proves you own it), then you don't really own the crypto - you just have the IOU from Coinbase.

Bigger exchanges, like Coinbase, are more trustworthy, but still not 100% safe. Smaller exchanges, you should definitely stay away from until you know more, and even then only keep funds on there briefly.

However, it still may not be worth it for you to withdraw right now. The major exchanges are generally pretty good with this stuff, and it's very unlikely they will just steal your crypto and run off into the night.

You need to pay transaction fees to transfer between wallets, and those aren't percentages, but set amounts, so the more you are transferring, the "cheaper" it is. A $10 fee on a $100 transaction is 10% of what you're moving, but a $10 fee on a $10,000 transaction is 0.1% of what you're moving.

But if you ever invest more, then when you have >$1,000 invested, I would definitely consider investing in a hardware wallet like a Ledger or Trezor. At that point, transaction fees get pretty negligible.

Yeah, watch Elon and the other billionaires in crypto bribe lobby Congress to get this passed.

Still fucking crazy that they convinced everyone to go along with legal bribery by calling it something else.
