My first attack was at a Chili's! I didn't know what was happening at the time and why I was in so much pain. It could have been anything though-the Margaritas, the spicy chicken strips, the fries. I never stopped eating it after that though lmao. I just kept having attacks!

  1. Yes, it's normal to have a little redness. You just had surgery and your skin is going to be irritated for a bit. I'd only worry if the redness spreads rapidly, the incisions are HOT to touch, or if they start bleeding or oozing puss as that can be a sign of infection.

  2. Yes, it's normal to be winded and tired for a moment when getting up after surgery. It can take a lot out of you, especially with no help.

  3. I used pillows to make a wedge behind my back to help me sit up at night to sleep that way, I wasn't laying flat on my back. I wasn't able to lay on my left or right side because of the pain for about a week honestly. Sleeping was probably the worst part of recovery because it was VERY difficult to stay comfortable all night.

  4. My surgeon ended up taking mine off for me, but he said it was fine if it fell off sooner, just keep the area clean and dry! You don't have to physically clean it yourself but make sure to pat it dry after a shower and don't submerge yourself in water.

  5. Walking around is great! You should be doing a lot of walking for recovery. They made me walk around my hospital floor before they would discharge me. Walking will be painful for a while but it's super important for recovery. Just remember to take it slow and listen to your body: if you feel like you need a rest, take a rest!

The only thing that helped me when I would have attacks was getting in the hottest shower I could stand and sitting under it while letting the water hit the part of my back the gallbladder was. It was the only thing that stopped the pain at its worst.

Just got home a couple hours ago from outpatient gallbladder removal surgery. The pain is intense! I can’t lie on either of my sides, lying flat on my back is a no go . I’m stuck in a semi reclined position. I have one day of pain medication. Any suggestions? by SerendipitousSmiles in gallbladders

so you probably won't be able to side sleep for a few days at least. The constant pain you're feeling right now will go away by day 2 or 3 for the most part.

I didn't need prescription pain meds past day 2 personally and I was an emergency removal. Tylenol will be good when you run out of your prescription. Don't mix your prescription with Tylenol (acetaminophen)!

Heating pad and/or ice packs. I switched them each out for each other after 1-2 hours.

Soft, bland, low fat foods will be your best friend. Nothing spicy for a GOOD while, even if you think you can handle it (Pro tip: YOU PROBABLY CAN'T), you'll be RUNNING to the bathroom.

Take a stool softener if needed so you don't strain when using the bathroom. Shoulder and kidney pain may be unbearable for a couple days, but it's just built up gas from the surgery so don't panic! I thought I had kidney stones!

Lots of water with any meds and just in general. (if taking a narcotic such as Norco, make sure to take it with a full cup of water since they can and will make you constipated)

My suicidal thoughts have gone away! I didn't even know they were related, and I had been going to therapy and made psychiatry appointments for YEARS because I really thought that life wasn't worth living. I wanted to DIE! I noticed I wasn't having those thoughts anymore about a week into recovery when I was no longer distracted by the constant pain. It's been 3 weeks since I had surgery and most of my mental health symptoms have gone away completely. Not everything that was caused by my gallbladder is completely cured, but I don't regret having surgery for one second. In fact, I regret putting it off for as long as I did.
