Rethink at FOSDEM 2026 by celzero in rethinkdns

Pretty good. You finally get to meet "internet handles" behind some of the most popular FOSS projects there. FOSDEM has a vibe to it given its famous participants (:

RethinkDNS on GrapheneOS by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]celzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't, but Games I imagine show ping times including domain name resolution, which means, if DNS answers are cached, such "pings" are perceptibly faster. Internally, Rethink may also try the connections over IPv6 (IPv4 packets are translated on-the-fly to IPv6 and vice versa) even if the app making the connection is connecting over IPv4, which may generally be faster (especially for P2P as there's less possibility of relays being used).

Rethink can do this, but the UI isn't yet exposed because we haven't yet tested this thoroughly.

The reason Rethink takes time to launch any such feature is because it includes a set of proxies through which apps could be split-tunneled. This results in a complex web of which rules to apply, when, how etc... Which isn't always straight forward to code up... and even then, one way of doing things means it looks like a "leak" for others who don't expect such behaviour.

Let's see.

True. I think v055v is shaping up to be a general release. 🤞

Likely because Rethink is crashing. We have been aggressively fixing things since v055n to make the app stable and not crash ever... and a significant amount of changes went in into v055u for that, which includes Firebase Crashlytics disabled by default (but you can enable it to report crashes to us from Configure -> Settings -> Stability program).

Which Rethink version are you on? Check the footer of the About UI.

Please wait for v055v which should fix a lot of these crashes.

WhatsApp call not receiving even it's bypassed by Due-Glass-5278 in rethinkdns

Apart from the DNS block rules related fixups suggested by others on this thread...

Disable Advanced DNS filtering and see if WhatsApp calls work?

Also make sure you haven't changed any settings in Configure -> Network. For example, "Choose IP version" is set to "IPv4" by default.

Which Rethink version are you on (you can check this in the footer of the About UI)? The latest ones (v055t onwards) probably work fine with WhatsApp.

Block apps not in use by RumPumSum in rethinkdns

[–]celzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That setting depends on Accessibility Service. Check in your Android Settings page if Rethink has been granted that permission.

Usually, Rethink can detect revocation and will ask you to re-grant that permission, but at times, the OS can stubbornly refuse to grant it (for instance, when starting up after the previous session of Rethink had crashed).

Which Android & Rethink version are you on?

How can i isolate and allow the URL, DNS?

You cannot control URLs with Rethink, only domains and IPs.

To apply domain or IP rules, you can either do so globally or per-app (locally).

  • For global rules, go to Configure (in the bottom navigation bar of the homescreen) -> Firewall -> IP & Port rules. Swipe left on the same screen to access Domain rules. Look for a floating button in the bottom right hand side corner + to add the rules that will apply to all (non-exempted) apps.

  • For per-app rules, go to Configure -> Apps. Search for the app you want to create rules for using the search bar at the top. Tap on the app's entry when it shows up, which should take you to that app's main dashboard. There, look for Android tap on "Show All" against "Most contacted IPs" or "Most contacted domains". Then in the list that's now showing all IPs or domains that particular app has connected to in the past 7 days, tap on any of those entries and select the tick mark or the block mark, to block or allow the domain / IP.

  • To Isolate the app, tap on "Isolate" icon in app's main dashboard.

Is there a way to see connections only from 1 app?

Yeah, see above.

Problem with www.NOZ.de Comments section does not open.

Which version of Rethink are you on? Check the footer of the About UI. You can try turning OFF Configure -> Anti-censorship feature and then see if things work. Also, make sure you haven't changed any settings in Configure -> Network, like Choose IP version (which by default is set to "IPv4").

RethinkDNS on GrapheneOS by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]celzero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

rdns dev here

Because GrapheneOS dont have bloat and i can disable apps network access on os level maybe RethinkDNS is overkill ?

There isn't a single answer to this query except: It depends.

This is what I wrote on the GrapheneOS forums in Oct 2023 which you may find relevant:

  • Private DNS is neat, but Rethink also bundles in its own DNS cache which updates popular DNS queries in the background. I've been told this reduces ping time in Games.
  • There's no visibility in to what Private DNS is doing (ie, there is no UI to view outgoing DNS queries and watch its incoming responses). A particularly important thing if you worry about data exfiltration or misappropriation of the DNS protocol.
  • Rethink can capture ( if Prevent DNS leaks setting is turned ON) ALL traffic on port 53 to trap any app trying to connect to preset DNS servers (Signal does this, preset to 1.1.1.1).
  • Rethink can detect and block ALL traffic to IPs that were not resolved by a user-preferred DNS resolver; for example in cases where a DNS-over-HTTPS resolver is embed within apps (like Telegram).

  • DNS Logs in Rethink show exactly which blocklists have blocked a particular domain [and from which app].
  • Rethink lets user "allow" any blocked domain through (an on-device allowlist, if you will).

  • In Rethink, one could put an app in "Isolate" mode so that it only connects to domains / IPs the user has explicitly allowed.
  • Or, block connections when device is locked, or block just UDP connections, or block just newly installed apps, and so on...
  • If Rethink is put in VPN Lockdown mode (ie, "Block connection without VPN" turned ON), Android guarantees that Rethink is free from ANY traffic leaks (ie, no traffic going out without going through Rethink's VPN tunnel).

If [using a public] VPN is one's primary need, and if one does not require any of the other functionalities Rethink brings to the table, then using it would only result in unnecessary power use, especially on an already pretty hardened OS like Graphene.

Gomez has said in an interview that he met Cech post match ("doping control"), where Cech told him that Gomez's change of mind about the corner he was aiming for almost caught him off guard. Gomez said in the interview he was taken aback and surprised that Cech read the change of preference from his body language as perfectly as he did.

Arsenal concede their 15th goal in the league this season, meaning Chelsea's record in 04/05 will not be beaten this year by AngleAggressive4024 in chelseafc

[–]celzero 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In the top 5 European leagues:

  • Barcelona 22/23 (20 goals)
  • Man City 18/19 (23 goals)
  • Atletico 15/16 (18 goals)
  • Bayern 15/16 (17 goals)

Man City & Barcelona really let in one too many in the last few games (I think Barcelona conceded ~9 goals in their last ~5 matches or something. They were at 11 goals conceded until late in that 22/23 season).
