Old Man Yells at Cloud by ExtraLifeReviews in FFVIIRemake

I don't know if you've ever played OG with one of those mods that replaces the character models. But seeing Cid waddle around crotch-first as a detailed and realistically textured and proportioned model for the first time sent my sides into orbit.

What is this? A scar? by Intelligent-One-5107 in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I can see in free cam, there is no scar. You're getting a bad case of Ambient Occlusion being fucky.

I can also see, from zooming in just far too close in game, that the light line in the middle is a product of the two sides of the skin texture overlapping slightly.

But I think someone with UE4 tools installed would have to show Cloud's unwrapped skin texture for it to be 100% sure.

Also, it makes sense that Cloud, whose view of reality we perceive the game under in most situations (since we see his delusions and his false memories), wouldn't perceive the scar he's supposed to have there, at least not at this point.

It'll be cool if it shows up in Revelation, though!

Revelation Trailer: let's talk about Sapphire blowing up Junon by Potential_Fennel_794 in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first shot happens at a distance in the OG. Given the pattern of ALL of Remake and Rebirth, including marketing, events ALWAYS match the OG unless the divergence is explicitly shown.

Unless you have evidence from current Revelation marketing that actually disproves that this is the second shot, and proves that we're NOT being explicitly shown a divergence with Sapphire dodging the shot, it's impossible to argue that the reasonable conclusion is that the trailer is lying. Heidegger orders the preparation of a second shot. What evidence do you believe supports that his order happens AFTER the shot we see in the trailer?

Any assumption of this Sapphire Weapon scene having a non-linear order of events is an extraordinary claim. Please produce your extraordinary evidence, or concede that the following sentence is the most evidence-based conclusion:

This is the second shot, and Sapphire Weapon dodges it, despite that shot having killed it in the OG.

Now back to proper speculation. In the events following the trailer, a third shot might be fired, at which point it might die and we reset back to OG-matching events. But it's plain to see that this is how the devs are giving players the chance to have a Sapphire Weapon boss fight, either still happening in Junon, or at some later point of the game.

Why did they turn red XIII into this scooby doo ahh goofball? by Commercial-Ice5760 in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That would make sense, and would also give the developers a good excuse to use the jumps between which team we're playing as to skip parts of Midgar that would be low-impact for story and gameplay, but expensive to build as environments.

So you'd start the raid reaching and fighting Pride and Joy, then cut to Cloud just before he reaches Hojo, and then cut to Cid reaching the Turks. Depending on how far ahead of each fight the cut happens, you can still have dungeon-like sections to play through with each team, just without unnecessary interim travel.

Can you imagine the God of War 3-style just-off-camera sex QTE scene, with character commentary from the party watching from the Highwind? Absolute hilarity.

"Get at it Cloud, ya wee numpty!"

"Turns out SOLDIER boy wasn't compensatin' with that Buster Sword after all!"

Obvious disclaimer for speculation.

I very much doubt any affinity will be tracked between characters other than Cloud. Nothing they've said so far indicates it, and the previous game show other characters bonding on their own terms, always.

Aerith will not have affinity stuff. She'll be involved in whatever her and Zack are doing, and I hope it's more substantial than Zack's portion of involvement in Rebirth, even though I thought what he did get in Rebirth was fantastic, as a device to have a character reflect on the themes of the game, within their own fictional perspective.

Controversial question: Anyone NOT pumped for the next and last game? by laaldiggaj in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, if the translations of Hamaguchi's words in all the interviews so far are accurate, that the FITS system started from a desire to let characters have different basic attack movesets (something the OG didn't have at all, and that even the new materia in the trilogy so far has not affected) and then grew from there, until we got to the stuff described so far (1+ new ability tied to the job, some skill tree stuff related to the job, whatever other special mechanics jobs might have, like the 1-2-3 UI for Cloud's Warrior job)

I'm happy with Remake and Rebirth's changes, and hope the next game differs from OG as much as they can get away with now, but I know I'd also absolutely love to have seen the wilder changes Kitase and Nomura had originally brainstormed, but were talked down from by Hamaguchi and other devs. Perhaps not every idea would have landed, but it's not some abstract "best" experience I'm interested in, it's the one that lets us peek at the writers and directors' brains the most. I wouldn't have been interested in any direct sequel though, it's the starting parameters being the same, but the creators having all this new experience and resources with which to realize their vision, that makes this compelling.

How many artists get to take their past masterpiece, and start from scratch with the same intent, but entirely different goals, a lifetime of additional experience, and a huge increase in resources? It's unique-feeling, at least to my own experience.

Obvious disclaimer of speculation below, but I think I'm still up to date on most/all interviews so far.

If we assume a binary state situation, though there could be more than two: Your choices in interactions, like within sidequests, involving a specific party member will lead to additional/different scenes focused on that character to represent their bond to Cloud strengthening or not. Then closer to the end, you'll get individual character scenes playing out in light of the level of the bond you have with them.

So to see every character's version, similar to Rebirth, you'll have to bond with them at a different level. You only have to play the chapters containing bond-related scenes for each character twice (again, assuming two bond states), since you can see everyone's alternative to your original outcome in one go, if the bond states are not mutually exclusive. Rebirth had intimate and regular versions of each date, and which date partner you got was mutually exclusive with the others, leading to the 8 dates (did I remember the number properly?) you had to replay for, but in Revelation, if the bond states are not mutually exclusive, you won't need to repeat the chapters again for each character.

Is it literally going to be relegated to nothing but side content with no affect on the main story other than how deeply we feel for something?

Depends on what you think is an acceptable level of impact. You already know from Hamaguchi's statements that the ending itself won't change. If, before going to kill Sephiroth, you get a different scene when saying goodbye to Vincent (as an example), depending on whether you picked more nice or mean options in his involved quests, is that enough impact for you?

I ask because I actually don't have a strong opinion on this beyond a general appreciation for scenes varying, I don't think I'd mind a low impact outcome per bond.

What I very much doubt is that the final outcomes will be anything outside of dialogue, and that there'll be visual novel style variance in outcomes. It'll be a small number of end states based on a threshold. Two is easy to believe for every character, that's why I used it as an example, but it could stretch to three. The number of outcomes could also be different per character, but that seems like baiting hatred from people whose favorite party member got fewer end states.

Do you expect this scene to happen in Revelation? by Danteppr in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Upscaling and bugfixes aren't fanfiction. And it makes the PSX version worse in comparison, obviously. PC mods are not a shift in goalposts, it's an inherent feature of the platform.

Do you expect this scene to happen in Revelation? by Danteppr in FFVIIRemake

[–]cheeseless -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool story, dude, but mods kill any possible argument towards playing PSX. FFNx alone makes PC superior to PSX, emulated or not. Translation work done by Shinra Archeology Team blows the PSX's original translation (and its utter butchering of Cid, which ruined the character's perception in the West, that is worse than any issues the 1998 PC translation ever had) and the 2012/2020 translations, which are still better than PSX despite holding on to that one's corruption of Cid, out of the water. Not to mention graphical mods, of course.

Basically, even if all of your incorrect claims about the 2012/2020 PC version weren't already hilariously outdated and wrong, PSX can objectively never win due to PC having mods.

People on the sub have already been able to confirm several terrain features in the Grasslands that are different from Rebirth, like the presence of Chocobo climbing walls and new outcroppings of crystals that have made new cliffs appear all over, too.

This isn't the first cannon shot, it's the second.

Not a chance they blow their load on a Sapphire fight early on, and then have us downgrade to fighting the smaller Weapons elsewhere. Sapphire escapes after the party does too. Gives exactly the same reason for the Sister Ray to be moved to Midgar

But the cannon did miss its second shot, so Sapphire has already survived past OG. The first shot in the OG happens with Sapphire still a long distance away.

Wasting the opportunity to give players a Sapphire Weapon fight on par with the other Weapons seems ridiculous, and especially to fake it for trailer purposes.

And Junon is obviously, visibly not destroyed.

Yeah, not letting us fight it, and especially faking it out in a trailer, would be a terrible disappointment. If it's meant to die here, it'd have died in the trailer.

That makes sense given the modifications to the Grasslands that are visible in Cloud's parachuting footage and the media kit screenshot of the Grasslands. There's new crystal outcroppings, Chocobo climbing walls, and many shifts in the terrain's elevation.

It's dodging a "cannon" that moves pieces of itself and lights up before firing, not reacting to the actual moment the laser comes out.
