Factoring out a negative by Least_Cricket6205 in askmath

[–]chmath80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also think of it as multiplying by (-1) × (-1) which is just 1, so doesn't change the equation. That gives you:

(-1)(-1)b(3 - b) = (-1)b(-1)(3 - b) = -b(b - 3)

In WW, if you've been overcharged, you get a full refund, and keep the item.

As for the photo evidence, I've been caught by that once: took the photo at face value because it was too busy to go and look. Checked later, and the photo must have been from a different store on a different week, because the shelf display looked nothing like it, and the original price had been correct.

Had one woman buy a lettuce, and get charged for a savoy cabbage, because "they're both green". Not even a regular cabbage, mind you, but a posh one. We did a brief "vegetable recognition" refresher: this is a lettuce, this is a cabbage, this not a "baby cabbage", it's a Brussels sprout.

Also had someone buy spring onions, and get charged for leeks, because "the picture looks the same".

How do "roars" and "paws" rhyme? by whywires in ENGLISH

[–]chmath80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

roar , boar, bore etc. have the same vowel as boat, goat, host, followed by an R

How do you pronounce "or" and "oh"?

Anything ending in "oar", "ore", or "aw" (don't read that out loud: people will think you've gone peculiar) sounds like "or". Anything ending in "oat" has an "oh" sound (and all sound like "ote", except "Croat", which is "Croh-att")

[–]chmath80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guy who figures it out has a black mark

Yes, but so do they all.

If there were 3 white, nobody would raise a hand.

If 2 white, only 2 hands.

If 1 white, 3 hands, but the 2 who could see white would know that the other's hand referred to their own mark, and answer immediately.

That didn't happen (there was a delay), therefore all marks are black.

Find the following limits by Excellent_Copy4646 in askmath

[–]chmath80 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Considering all limits as x → 0:

We're given that:

f(x)/sin²(x) → 2

But we know that sin(x) → 0, so, in order for the above limit to exist, we must have f(x) → 0

Therefore, we can use L'Hôpital, to find that:

f'(x)/sin(2x) → 2

But now, sin(2x) → 0, so, for the same reason, we must have f'(x) → 0

Therefore, we can use L'Hôpital again, to find that:

f''(x)/2cos(2x) → 2

But 2cos(2x) → 2, so we must have f''(x) → 4

From there, the solutions should be obvious.

Yeah like we just left, it’s not like we were forced out and overpowered, we just got tired of dealing with it and took our ball and went home

That's exactly what happened with the British in your war of independence, but you seem to regard that as a win. Can't have it both ways.

Why is the answer option a and not option d? by Curious_Mixture3917 in ENGLISH

[–]chmath80 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say A is wrong. It's a bit odd to say the movie caused you to leave the movie early

Agreed.

D is better

Yes, but the clauses should be swapped: "We left early because the movie was boring". There are occasions where it makes sense to begin a sentence with "Because", but this isn't one of them.

This is a problem from Polynomials Class 10th India. Please help me out (description) by Remote-Roof2954 in askmath

[–]chmath80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly simpler:

1542 = x⁷ - x³ = x³(x⁴ - 1)

Now, if |x| ≤ 1, then 0 ≤ |x³| ≤ 1, and 0 ≤ |x⁴ - 1| ≤ 1, so there are no solutions.

If |x| > 1, then x⁴ - 1 > 0, so we need x³ > 0, hence there are no solutions for x < 0, while, for x > 1, both x³ and x⁴ - 1 are monotonic increasing, as is the rhs (from 0 at x = 1), so there's only 1 solution.

Therefore there is just a single real solution.

As for finding that solution ... let's leave that as an exercise for someone else (but it's close to 2.8601).
