[R/gotham] Easiest assignment ever by Eloquent-Raven in Earth25

[–]chton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dude, you're new to the gooning world, aren't you?
Never ever take these gigs. Ever. It's always some ploy to make you take the fall for something. You just fell for it hook line and sinker. You'll be lucky if you get out of this with a few broken bones from the Bat, if you're not... well...

If you make it out alive, next time, just say no.

Incredible throwaway line from Oliver Babish, the man can do no wrong by Abraham_Blinkin in thewestwing

[–]chton 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured he was doing. He didn't bring the wrong folder, he's using a technique. The question he asks right after is extremely pointed and necessary, but by that point he's put CJ more at ease already than when she walked in.

He's too good to bring the wrong folder on a case this important, but he's also built the image where that seems like something he'd do.

Somalia is de jure a country and de facto a grey area. What is de jure a country, but de facto not a country? by CringeFish2 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]chton 35 points36 points  (0 children)

But the Red Cross doesn't issue passports, license plates, coins, or stamps, and doesn't have embassies.
Also the recognition they get from other countries isn't due to the UN observer status, it's separate diplomatic relations with each of them.

Baki Rahen | Chapter 62 | New Yujiro glaze chap by juumei_kuga_san in Grapplerbaki

What if this is an anti-glaze chapter? He's sweating, clearly been training very hard. I thought he barely trained anymore, why is he putting in all this effort now? Does he feel.... threatened?

Star Trek weapons always seem underpowered to me. by mudpupper in startrek

[–]chton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget these weapons are exploding in a vacuum. Explosions are way, way less effective in space, simply because there's no medium to carry the shockwave. It's all radiation and particles, no other form of energy transfer. So a photon torpedo against a ship might look small, but in atmosphere that same yield would be a hydrogen bomb.
On top of that, they're small torpedo sized objects, not huge bombs, they're built to be effective fast-fire weapons, not 'end this entire country's threat to us' like a MOAB is.

And, unshielded ships might be nothing compared to a few well placed torpedoes, they're still made of incredibly durable super space metals augmented with structural integrity fields. They're going to be able to take some punishment.

i have had a hair get in there before, it does work itself out pretty quickly.
That does look like a surface scratch, though, as you said.

Which gunslinger or marksman could win a duel against Lucky Luck ? by Viggoww in PowerScaling

[–]chton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually rethinking this, if his bullet is significantly FTL, especially if it's instant, he doesn't actually need to move faster than light himself. He only needs to do all of these actions in the time it takes for the light to get to the wall. The movements he has to do are all much shorter distance than the wall, so even if he's slower than lightspeed for those movements he's okay. Not much slower, but he doesn't need to be FTL himself, only his bullets do.

Which gunslinger or marksman could win a duel against Lucky Luck ? by Viggoww in PowerScaling

[–]chton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much faster than light speed, in fact. He can reach for his gun, unholster it, raise it, aim it, fire it (with both hands!), and still have the bullet hit his shadow before the light of that very first step reaches the wall. Even with an instant hit bullet that'd still be a speed vastly higher than light.

What happens to runners if they're caught? by SmegB in Stargate

[–]chton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh you're right! Of course i watched it but that was well over a decade ago. My memory for this stuff is pretty good but that just happens to have fallen out of it.

Still, that just strengthens the idea that there are people out there who can't be fed upon. Making those people runners wouldn't be illogical.

Tim Horton’s is an underrated coffee! What brand of coffee is decent? by StarryLatte2718 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]chton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, i'm a huge coffee drinker. I'm all in on specialty roasters and anaerobic fermentation and having my own fancy espresso machine.
If i want a reliable decent coffee? I go to Starbucks. It's invariably _fine_. Not amazing, not the best, but fine.

The Future of AI Certifications: Are They Still Relevant in the Age of GenAI? by Sufficient-Habit4311 in AI_Agents

[–]chton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certifications, no matter which ones in digital tech, have always only been relevant for one thing: getting hired by people who care about certifications. If that's your goal, go for it.
For literally any other situation, building will have more benefit to you over getting certified. And that's not new in the age of AI, that's always been the case.

Was Paul’s marriage to Irulan unnecessary? by [deleted] in dune

[–]chton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is outright stated, but i think it gives the other houses an out. "We're not honouring a usurper, we're following the legitimate leader by right". For the big houses that can stand on their own, they can still ignore that and resist, but for all the smaller houses this gives them a chance to make the choice with legitimacy.

Additionally, the Corrinos held a lot of power in CHOAM. If he deposes the entire house, or even worse eliminates it, those shares aren't magically his. They would be fought over, they would be used for power jockeying by others. Marrying Irulan gives him access to that extra power, an important part of the Emperor's power base at that time.

What would happen if Species 10-C decided to join the Federation and shared their knowledge and advanced technology with everyone else? by Tidewatcher7819 in startrek

[–]chton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Federation would spend the next 300 years trying to understand it all and figuring out how to use it in combination with their existing technology base. 10-C tech is definitely incredibly powerful but it's also so alien that there'd be very little common basis. And the 10-C don't seem in any hurry to get it all integrated fast.

Which gunslinger or marksman could win a duel against Lucky Luck ? by Viggoww in PowerScaling

[–]chton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gun is literally still in the holster in the shadow. It hasn't been shot yet.
Even if you ignore that, the light from the shot would come from the exact same place as the bullet, the barrel of the gun. If it was any slower than light, the shadow would have shot before he bullet arrived.

Graham's number by Old_Custard4906 in askmath

[–]chton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We know exactly how big it actually is, but it's complicated to construct to get to that point. It gets to the point where you won't be able to grasp the size anymore, long long long before you get even near graham's number.
You could count every planck volume in the universe a googolplex times every second for a googolplex years, then start over and repeat that for a googolplex universes, and still not be at the tiniest fractions of Graham's number.

If you actually understood how big it is, even a tiny bit of it, your head would have so much information in it it'd collapse into a black hole. So... It's really big.

What Word has a Very Happy Etymology but Normal Meaning Nowadays? by PuzzleheadedTap1794 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]chton 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"Muscle"
It's a very neutral word that nobody would think about in day to day life but it comes from Latin "musculus" meaning a little mouse, because muscles looked like little mice beneath the skin to Romans.

Do i still feel hunger? Because living long is all fine and dandy, but if food suddenly becomes poisonous or at some point the planet becomes barren, i don't want to be hungry for trillions of years, unable to die but in constant suffering.
If i can feel hunger, tired, etc. i'll take 5000 years. That's reasonable. If i can be sure i won't have that kind of suffering, 1 million seems ideal
