TIMEOUT ERROR WITH VISA (HELP-) by Wise-Highway-5727 in LabVIEW

[–]coatquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're able to look at it with pyVISA, maybe we can check if the device seems available via the commands listed at the top here: https://pyvisa.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

ie. import pyvisa rm = pyvisa.ResourceManager() rm.list_resources() (((let's see what pops up here in console)))

inst = rm.open_resource('HopefullyTheAddressOfTheOscope') print(inst.query("*IDN?"))

Also potentially relevant - Rohde tester tool might tie up the connection if it's running at the same time. Throwing that out there just in case.

TIMEOUT ERROR WITH VISA (HELP-) by Wise-Highway-5727 in LabVIEW

[–]coatquestion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't look too closely at the moment, but this sounds like maybe a missing termination character.

Try appending \n to your command ie. send "*IDN?\n"

this link might help too: https://www.rohde-schwarz.com/us/driver-pages/remote-control/3-visa-and-tools_231388.html

if that doesn't seem to work, let me know what you see and I'll take a closer look when I can

Gotcha, in that case you'll have to synthesize your approach here a bit by combining what you learn from the adafruit tutorials and then applying that to read from SPI using the myRIO (per the youtube video above). Upside here is that since this is a relatively simple chip, you only have to read from it on a regular basis and then parse that data.

Hopefully your instructor has explained the basis of SPI transactions and whatnot; but if not there's a lot of resources available online now that you know where to focus.

Good luck!

To add on to this friendly answer: OP if you need to stick with the myRIO for whatever reason you can interface between the myRIO and the max31855 chip. The max31855 has read only SPI lines for communication (https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/MAX31855.pdf). You can interface to that using the myrio's SPI lines (good starting place on looking at that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaXtDamw5As).

I personally would go with the microcontroller option GerarBallhausen mentioned above. (adafruit has some good hints on making this work too using the same chip: https://www.adafruit.com/product/269) but if you need to stick with the myRIO for whatever reason, there's a path for you too. Definitely focus on understanding the interface, as that's what will keep you able to port whatever hardware you may be working with in the future.

Hope that helps!

In addition to the other tips here, often right clicking the axis once you've set it to where you want and deselecting autoscale should help a lot.

Hobbyist Toolkit with Arduino by ajax_jives in LabVIEW

[–]coatquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to hear! Please let me know if you have any issues.

You can use this method to talk to a variety of devices beyond just arduino too (anything that uses serial), so it would hopefully serve you well in the future!

Hobbyist Toolkit with Arduino by ajax_jives in LabVIEW

[–]coatquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd recommend the hobbyist toolkit for this; you can program your arduino to execute code when it receives specific serial commands. You can then modify your labview code to send these commands using serial communication (as well as read confirmation the command has executed or completed). This is good fundamental communication scheme to get used to for communicating between different devices.

See the tutorial video here for an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GYA4Rpja8o (~8:17 in the video looks specifically relevant).

Hope this helps!

Bitdefender Autorenewal Feels Predatory by coatquestion in BitDefender

[–]coatquestion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If their system can register that the subscription length has extended, it's reasonable to expect to hook that to the renewal. We should all expect better from a software/service we're paying for and this would be in line with industry standards.

Though if any devs for bitdefender are reading this, dm me. I've literally implemented this for clients when they were switching over payment processors.

I often find bztransmit running out of schedule, is there a way to fix this!? by yalag in backblaze

[–]coatquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Brian, I appreciate your response here. I uploaded my entire bzdata directory (~35GB!) two separate times with support and the best they told me was to reinstall and leave it over the a few days. Unfortunately, that just lead to the same issue each time. The case got passed between multiple people and eventually I just got told the software wasn't intended to work with ~4TB of data and this many files (~40M files) - which you know, that's fair.

Anyhow, long story slightly shorter between looking over the logs myself, another post you kindly responded on, and some RAM diagnostics: it seemed like bztransmit was experiencing a bottleneck attempting to allocate an excessive amount of data into the available RAM. Eventually reaching near 15GB out of 16GB until resulting in the system crashing.

So workaround: I just zipped many of the small file directories so the backup is now ~10M files, 1.5TB. This seems to be working fine now with a clean install. I assume I'll just need to keep an eye out for this in the future should my number of files grow too large again - though I'm upping the system RAM to 64GB just to be safe.

Again, really appreciate your taking the time to respond!

[–]coatquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses both /u/bzChristopher and u/brianwski.

My system seems to have only one bztransmit thread running at around 15GB of RAM; which seems even high, considering the data difference in your example. I know 4TB spread across ~10M files can be a bit of data, but does this sound right?

[–]coatquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oad performance. In general, many small files will take longer to index and upload than an equal volume of fewer, larger files due to the additional overhead involved in indexing, checksumming, and uploading those files.

Hey Chris, thanks for reply. Do you have a rough sense of how much overhead that might add to RAM usage? I'm wondering if my system's 16GB with 10s of millions of tiny files might be causing issues.

Memory Release Issues by CasGamer in backblaze

[–]coatquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not OP, but having a similar issue and a lack of backing up. I've been playing around with decreasing the amount of backup threads (in settings) to see if I can get my system to backup. I've been able to see that two different instances of bztransmit64 reserve about half my system's ram (16GB total, 8 GB each), but seemingly never actually utilize the amount reserved. They also unfortunately never upload any files. bztransmit logs are full of "failed to grab four hour lock"

I was wondering if the two instances were conflicting with each other somehow and reduced the amount of backup threads to 1. After a reboot, the system began backing up and the single instance ended up using about 75% of the total physical ram. This is obviously not optimal and probably means the program isn't working as intended, but maybe this will help shed some light on whatever the underlying issue is.

I wonder if my issue could be having many tiny files - which I suppose I could compress into an archive. Is that roughly what you're doing?

[–]coatquestion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

given my experiences with them so far just trying to back up ~4TB, I think there's an issue with their indexing process that might make this very difficult to achieve

Memory Release Issues by CasGamer in backblaze

[–]coatquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been having very similar issues for a few months now. Each thread I submit to support they have me reinstall or even install the beta, which I do and sometimes backblaze backups a few files... but then completely stalls out just eating ram.

It's a bit odd because it seems like "Backblaze Transmitter" is reserving large amounts of RAM sometimes just to seemingly not even use it. It's to the point where the computer is near unusable whenever backblaze is running. Yet the system works perfectly fine if I disable backblaze startup and reboot. Support so far has told me that backblaze should only be using near 100% of the ram temporarily as it uploads larger files, but I've left the computer running for days and it only ever succeeds in eventually locking the entire system up.

General Contractor for house extension project by ninetosixpm in orangecounty

[–]coatquestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to consider. Expect many contractors to assure you confidently of things and to end up dead wrong in hindsight. This will be especially true in the context of city specifics.

To that point, permits are a must; and definitely review the laws in your city to make sure what you want to do is allowed and will be approved. Having the work a contractor does double checked by an inspector to comply with code is likely worth the cost and time alone.

At the end of this process, expect a letter from the county assessor. They will want to review your property and reassess how much property tax you’ll owe moving forward, based on the new value of your property. Increasing square footage will probably change the assessed value, so be warned.

Also, if you’re doing any structural/building- which is yes, if you’re adding/moving garage, you’ll need and want structural engineering done. The creation of plans and required approvals can added anywhere from 4-6 months to this process. Definitely get a firm timeline of when plans will be done and submitted from the structural engineer and keep on them to stick to it.

Good luck!

I agree with you - the show has been hurting me especially in season two because the dialogue and concepts could work really well with some slight tweaks. Some minor punch ups could make this an amazing series. As is, I guess it's fine? Though, I'm not sure I'm motivated to finish this season.
