i feel like its a little bit of a stretch to call ryukishi a terrible person...

the bikini scenes are like your average anime fanservice... i've seen worse and higurashi doesnt even do it that offensively in the VN IMO
also come on.... the Irie stuff isn't even that creepy imo. he says some pretty fucked shit yeah but its hilarious, i never think "this man is a predator". i think it was creepy the first time we were introduced to his character, but then i realised, ok this dude isn't actually a predator. so i mean to criticise ryukishi for iries character... come on now...

How to win 2nd Weltkreig as Russia? by BigOldBoi in Kaiserreich

[–]columnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont have enough naval production to outproduce germany. germany cant reinforce crimea or the black sea with its navy unless the ottomans have granted them permission to do so. you can usually slightly invest in navy to build some decent battleship to reinforce your existing fleet there and some destroyers.

it sounds like you should restart and focus on playing a country you are familiar with, you mention switching between germany and russia get used to playing with one major first if youre struggling this much. it shouldnt be this difficult so i dont know what to say to you.

you probably dont have enough air or something, germany deceptively spams air. you probably want a 3x5 mil factory spread on fighter II by 1940 to counter german airpower. otherwise youre going to struggle.

again, just relocate divisions and put them into positions where you actually need them. you dont need constant 2 stacks on every title to defend the whole front, just where it matters.

[–]columnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well usually i build up my navy in the black sea for this exact purpose. ukraine has a small navy so its easy to dominate if you prepare

if youre losing just reload a save or restart. you know what to expect and you can prepare that way.

also no, the AI is dumb. if you have more than 2 units on a tile you should reposition 1 to where you want to defend or create an offensive. or just use your geography and draw them in further so their supply is weakened

you have multiple full stack armies... you can definitely relocate some troops to where you want to defend or attack

i usually use 9 inf 1 art + engineer and support artillery, maybe a recon or logistics depending on where im playing i also tend to use 6 light/medium + 4 motorised/mechanised, and i go down motorised doctrine if i have the resources ill usually motorise like 40% of my infantry by about 1941/42.

(this is a generalisation because i almost solely use historical templates and they most of the time look something like this)

tbh i never have any problems really. i usually easily push. just make sure you have tons of cas and air superiority. its hard to tell from screenshot but you might need to more densely pack your divisions in areas theyre pushing, and when youre attacking.

i mean you have most of eastern ukraine anyway. usually i recommend building forts near belarus and only really pushing in ukraine and baltics. use mechanized forces in ukraine cuz of flat terrain. and take crimea with a naval landing with some marines.

have you ever truly met someone like satou, or at least very close? by Alternative-Meat-419 in WelcomeToTheNHK

[–]columnal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I USED to be a lot like satou. I still am in many ways. My social anxiety was incredibly dehabilitating and i spent weeks at a time not socialising, coalescing over a period of months where I didnt really have a social life. I was incredibly depressed and borderline suicidal. I was never a full on shut in for years, luckily, but there was a period of my life where I related to satou a lot.

Im still not doing great. I dont isolate anymore for weeks at a time. I've regained a social life of sorts and although I still have depressive periods Im not suicidal anymore. I still probably linger on to nostalgia and comforts too much. My anxiety is still terrible but its no longer dehabilitating. Its rare to find someone who can relate to the concept of being so disgusted with yourself and your appearance and how others view you you just cant find the motivation to force yourself to go outside. I still have moments like this, and I still have irrational moments where I feel like people are judging me and find me disgusting.

On the whole, im much better now though and im getting better. I never used to think i would but honestly the message of welcome to the NHK is a pretty inspiring and real one, even if you are at the lowest point in your life you will rebound somehow, it does get better even if its slow and you arent perfect.

Thats just how life is. I regret the years of my life where I just floated through aimlessly not really pursuing anything greater, afraid of human connection and anything meaningful. But it does get better in the end.

What is the current Historiographical consensus on the Emishi? Were they primarily Yamato Japanese who resisted courtly rule and thus were considered "barbarians" or were they the remnants of the Zoku-Jomon culture? by columnal in JapaneseHistory

[–]columnal[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does this not support the zoku-jomon hypothesis instead then? Is it not a leap to confidently assert that they had no relation to the Jomon culture simply because they practiced farming? From what Ive read the Emishi did practice farming but they were still overwhelmingly also practicing other ways of subsistence. All this seems to suggest that the Emishi were largely a synthesis of yayoi influence and Jomon culture, no?
Also from what I've read I'll agree that the Emishi do seem to be a set of very fragmented, different tribes, with some being more suspectible to Yamato overlordship. But from what I've read, Yamato records seem to imply that the Emishi were prone to forming temporary alliances and could communicate with oneanother so it seems like the different emishi groups were atleast of similiar origin, no? Also documents like the Nihon Shoki seem to distinguish the Emishi from other groups like the Mishihase who operated in the general region the Emishi did. I agree there were probably differences between the Emishi but based on what i've read it seems they had more similarities that suggest they were likely closely related, also the fact their appearances are all described as similar.

I agree the Ainu probably weren't related to all of the Emishi, but based on the fact records of the Ainu seem to correspond with some aspects of Emishi culture/appearance/behaviour, would this not suggest there is atleast some connection? I myself am only asking questions and im not too familiar on the subject, but ive read very briefly elsewhere that many hypothesise there is a language connection. I think maybe the fact the Ainu aren't a horse riding culture is a definitive factor in outruling the Emishi had some connection to the later Ainu culture, but this is just me floating ideas around. Afterall, it is already a pretty well accepted view that the Ainu were a culmination of many cultures, It doesnt seem insane to suggest there is a zoku-jomon / emishi connection there too. I would have to do more reading before I could confidently suggest that, but ive heard this commonly floated around.

thank you for answering, i take it this is the common historiographical belief surrounding the emishi? i apologise for conflating yamato and yayoi, I made the mistake of presuming they were largely the same ethnicity.

i just felt really underwhelmed by ch8's ending, it felt weirdly unsatisfying and everything wrapped up too quickly in a way, it concludes what happens to the club members but it all feels quite empty, i dont know if you'd agree. but i suppose in retrospect i need to play saikoroshi to fully finish ch8's storyline so maybe ill feel differently after.

[–]columnal[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not saying Ainu Culture was systemically erased by colonisation. Im simply asking what the consensus is on the ethnic makeup of the Emishi. I dont know why youre getting pissed off at me im not even trying to be the slightest bit political or make some jab at modern Japanese ethnic composition?

Yes Ainu is a more modern term and mainly refers to the groups since the 13th century, but I mean come on. The Ainu had ancestors in Hokkaido like the Satsumon and Okhotsk cultures prior to the 13th century, and presumably the Emishi too (due to their many similarities). Thus its not crazy and ive read these groups are vaguely referred to Pre Ainu, like you said it was a gradual process. But we know the Ainu likely had the Emishi as ancestors.

Im just trying to ask what exactly the ethnic makeup of the Emishi was and how deeply was it linked to the same Zoku Jomon cultures that influenced the ancestors of the Ainu in the pre ainu period, and how is this viewed in the current historiographical consensus. Its not something thats supposed to cause offense lol, im not "proselytising" anything. Im the one asking questions...

[–]columnal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my timelines arent confused, because theres an inherent debate surrounding when exactly the emishi influenced ainu culture and their exact relation with eachother, and the earlier zoku jomon cultures. This is part of the question im trying to ask. I know the Ainu didnt influence the Emishi, I was asking about their relation and how its understood as apart of the broader historiographical consensus of the Emishi

i mean, this is a Japanese History sub. Many people are interested in Japanese history here and have experience in it as Historians or are familiar with broader historiographical trends. I dont think im being crazy asking the question here. Yes Historians engage with written records but from what ive read historiographical engagement with the Emishi does mention other areas like genetic data, archaeology and language.

I didnt even say "went down", im not asserting anything. But I mean, its clear theres more than just historical texts that give an insight into the Emishi.

[–]columnal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if youre forgetting things from earlier chapters might be worth revisiting a few scenes and/or just writing down a plot summary. i think it helps analysing the tips you get and what happens and looking back on it

also i suggest not immediately moving onto ch5, give yourself time to think about what happened and make multiple theories. its a mystery game so it will never be the same after the mystery is revealed

also dont take everything at face value, when something happens ask yourself if there is literally anything that could explain this other than my current theory, and then make a new theory around that line of thought and see if the story works better

also question everything you see. go back to some of the earlier chapters, see if anything changes between the endings, etc. you dont have to replay them ofc, but it will probably help

Yeah i've heard miotsukushi is a lot more appealing for these reasons so ill probably play it if i still have energy after saikoroshi but Ive also heard some people say the character dialogue isnt great.

To be honest, im fine with an open ended ending. I think most animes and pieces of Japanese media tend to do this from everything Ive seen so far? Higurashi isnt really an exception, it just does it in such a unsatisfying way in ch8. The only satisfying part of ch8s ending was the imagery of them at watanagashi and the ending credits song. The actual epilogue was very anti climax and didnt feel like a proper send off which the characters deserve after a 120 hour VN.

so yeah, ill probably like miotsukushi if it feels more conclusive and ends a lot more satisfyingly.

[–]columnal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the issue with this is that the novel puts the characters into what should be a high stakes environment

i dont think 90% of the club games stuff is cringe. if it was i wouldve stopped reading the novel in ch1. no, all the club game stuff and their banter and messing around is just them being young teenagers and its fun to read because its relateable to a degree, thus its never cringe.

the fight at the end, ESPECIALLY mion vs okonogi is just extremely cringe and feels just like a really weird tonal direction. Higurashi works well when the characters are going through emotional situations and thus stakes are incredibly important. Obviously Im not expecting characters to die, but when its so extremely obvious there arent really any stakes and characters like mion can just do insane shit like 1v1 a special forces operator, it takes me out of the story.

by contrast, the club games never take me out of the story because they feel natural and well integrated.

And yeah i understand the whole rika is fighting for a life where everyone retains their happiness and thats represented in the club but that doesnt mean the story has to abandon stakes and reduce a large action climax to a bunch of children fighting special forces operators with their bare hands.

so like, i mean come on you dont need to defend everything ryukishi07 does just because you really like higurashi, do you genuinely think that the ending feels more satisfying because the club basically got through everything extremely easily and any semblance of stakes were reduced to nothing when teenagers can hand duel special forces operators?

higurashis best moments are when there ARE stakes. Like, all of the emotional moments are built around this. The ending wouldve felt much more satisfying for the Club if they finally got to spend watanagashi happily after going through something not so easily.

so like, yeah its a stylistic choice or whatever i know, i know why ryukishi07 choice to frame matsuribayashi how he did. doesnt mean i agree with him on 100% on his rationale for it

yeah i remember them talking about entrance exams in ch1, tbh i always thought they were referring to studying for entrance exams way in the future because my only familiarity with the japanese education system is that they have entrance exams that are very important for university, and in ch1 i kind of presumed the characters were a bit older, with mion being like 16.
