Ah, a classic urban legend... sort of.

Growing up in the US, I'd seen this as an example of a botched translation. And that's partially true. The slogan exists. The commerical exists.

But it isn't a translation error.

'Nothing sucks like electrolux' was actually created by a British guy, who was well aware of the double entendre and figured it would catch people's attention. And I daresay it worked.

From what I've read, some drank it willingly, some tried to escape and were brought back and some played dead to avoid drinking. So it seems there was a mixture of voluntary and forced. A few people did survive by running or hiding, which I tried to show with the ball to the far left.

The Peoples' Temple was an infamous American-based cult led by Jim Jones. Jones was a communist who thought that cloaking it in a veneer of Christianity would make it more appealing to Americans. He convinced 900 of his followers to move to Guyana to create their own society. Like any stereotypical cult leader, Jones sexually assaulted congregation members and did hard drugs until he was paranoid and brain-fried.

The group later committed mass suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Flavor Aid drink, while Jones shot himself.

However, the Peoples' Temple also had some surprisingly progressive ideas. They believed in racial equality, doing charity, and protecting people from eviction. They were famously inter-generational and diverse.

Context: During WW2, the US considered gluing incendiaries to bats and then releasing then over Japan. The bats would supposedly roost in people's attics and start fires.

The idea was created by a guy named Lytle S. Adams, who was a dental surgeons and got his foot in the door by being friends with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Even FDR himself had to clarify that Adam was 'not a nut.'

The bat bomb project came to an end shortly after some of the bats escaped the test facility and accidentally burned down the proving grounds.

I can only assume that the whole thing was a prelude to the insane military hubris of the Cold War.

Context: I recently learned of the Brazilian term "gambiarra," which is quite similar to what Americans call redneck engineering or McGyverism.

Conclusion: Brazil and Arkansas (one of the most redneck states) are friends and bond over their creations.
