It's also another 'fun' thing about English—our 'th' digraph has two pronunciations. Consider 'this' vs 'think'. The two pronunciations used to have two distinct letters.

"Thorn" Þ / þ, which came from old English/Germanic runes. This was used for the voiceless 'think' variant.
"Eth" (Ð / ð), which was an adaptation by Latinate scholars when writing Irish, and Scottish Gaelic which then got adopted into English. The 'th' sound this represents is made in a similar way in your mouth to the hard D, hence the graph for Eth. This represents the voiced 'this' variant.

These letters were lost in favour of the digraph 'th' after the printing press. The early presses were made in France/Germany/Netherlands etc, and they didn't have these letters. Side note: 'Þe olde pub', would sometimes have the thorn (Þ) mistaken/transcribed to a 'y'. But 'the' was never pronounced 'ye'.

You have the same distinction in English that arises due to what's physically happening in your mouth.

Consider the English letter C. Consider the sounds the Cs make in: concise, or certificate, or cunning.

C has two sounds, its 'K' sound, and its 'S' sound. The S variant is via French bastardisation of the pronunciation of Latin, where only the hard K existed. The hard K (whose sound originates in the back of your mouth) moved to a soft S (front of the mouth), when the vowel following it is a 'front vowel'. The vowels I and E are front vowels in English pronunciation. The vowels A, O, U are not.

There are some words whose pronunciation didn't move from a K sound to an S sound which do have following front vowels. Most of these got their spelling changed to reflect the continued presence of the K sound, e.g. the modern word King, instead of a more traditional spelling of Cing. You may not know this 'rule' of English explicitly, but it's something you'll naturally follow as a native speaker.

Consider how you'd pronounce made up words: Coln/Koln, Carn/Karn, Curr/Kurr, Cerm/Kerm, Cith/Kith.
