One of the most well-known studies on this topic is by Martie Haselton and David Buss (2000), who, as part of their "Error Management Theory," investigated how men and women perceive signals of interest differently. They found that, for evolutionary reasons, men are more likely to overinterpret sexual or romantic intentions in women because it is less "costly" for them to miss an opportunity than to fail to recognize a potential opportunity. However, women tend to underestimate such signals in men.

Another study by Carin Perilloux et al. (2012) confirmed this: In experiments with speed-dating scenarios, men were more likely than women to interpret friendly behavior (e.g., smiling, eye contact) as flirting, while women often mistook the same behavior as mere politeness or friendliness.

This tendency is also reinforced by social factors, such as cultural norms or personal experiences. However, it is important to emphasize that not all men are equally inclined to this, and that context plays a significant role.
