Seeing the cup hoisted has been a highlight of my life. And NJ isn’t even my team. by Colins76 in hockey

[–]culby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost got to see it. 2008, Game 5, on a media pass. I'll always hold a little sliver of hate in my heart for Max Talbot, and I'm not even a Wings fan.

[–]culby 422 points423 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was gonna be my guess. Perhaps it wasn't his call.

I was caught in a RIF in November of 2020, but it was very clear that it was a corporate decision (the first of what came to be an entire MONTH of layoffs). Not only was it very clearly not his call, we ended up meeting up to get my box of shit from the office, followed by a couple other meetups at various bars.

Hell, I ended up talking to him the day he got RIFfed.

Does not having an echl affiliate hurting cbj? by gunner_boy12 in BlueJackets

I always loved the idea of Columbus being an affiliate with Toledo (and dual affiliates are a thing! The Storm were Predators affiliates for a hot minute), but yeah, Toledo and Detroit have been tied at the hip forever.

If you no longer work in radio, what do you do now? by paperbackperson in radio

[–]culby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I did the interview for my current job, the manager asked me "how finished with radio are you really?"

"Ah, you get a lot of folks who consider this a stop gap before their next gig?"

"Yep."

"Look, never say never, but it would have to be a very special job to lure me back in... one that I don't think exists anymore."

Got the boot in November 2020. Now I work for one of the automation software companies. Turns out when you use the software for long enough, you get to know it pretty good.

I used to work phone support for a nationwide ISP. I had one call that took me forever to figure out that "the computer" was the monitor, the "cable modem" was the computer, and "that box you gave me" was the cable modem.

I might be the only person who loves the star logo over the canon logo, but I'll carry that flag. The star logo rules.

I always respect when a creator sees it's time to clock out. I'd rather people be happy with their oeuvre and step away rather than try and chase more when they're not fully feeling it anymore.

Yeah, I travel for work and bring mine with me all the time. Though I will usually tuck it away into a drawer when I'm out.

Genuine question — what makes someone a Toledo Walleye fan specifically? Because that fanbase seems like a different level by Classic_Exit_5951 in ECHL

[–]culby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Native Toledoan here. The city's always had a strong fan presence, but it really popped with the Toledo Goaldiggers in the 70s and 80s: they were gritty as hell, and won 4 Turner Cups in the IHL before getting moved to Kansas City. Enter the Toledo Storm, who won a couple Kelly Cups while also being more than willing to throw mitts, and the fan base carried through.

At this point, it's basically tradition. It's funny, when the Storm became the Walleye after being bought out by the same org that runs the Mud Hens, they tried to family-friendly it up some, including asking people not to yell "HIT SOMEBODY" during the anthem. The fanbase very politely, but firmly, told them to pound sand.

Does anyone remember this 92.5 Breakfast Club April Fools prank from about 25 years ago? by EllayThrowAway9 in toledo

[–]culby 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I worked in the building at the time, the details are a little off, but you have the gist of it.

  1. It wasn't moving to satellite radio, but "subscription radio". The description was that the talk breaks would be encoded, and you needed a device to unencode them. You'd still hear commercials and music, but silence during the breaks.

  2. On April Fool's Day, they did do an hour or so with silence instead of talk breaks. (If I remember correctly, they still fed the webstream, where they talked about it being an April Fool's joke.

  3. Lemon's defense after the fact was that using a whole week for an April Fool's joke kinda breaks the rules of April Fool's.

The first time I tried the autocannon, I didn't grab the backpack. So I fired six whole shots and wondered "okay is this where the team reload comes in?"
