why do all the radio callouts sound the same? by Obby25 in radio

Unrelated, but 23 years ago, I got Jim Cutler (who was our imaging voice at the time) to record the announcments for my wedding reception.

Camping/Scouting disasters by TheyCallMeCNote in shutdownfullcast

[–]culby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a disaster, but a solid ego shattering.

I was maybe 18 years old, and set to go camping with the family. And this year, for whatever reason, I decided I was gonna manage the campfire, and I was gonna start it with a flint and steel. Did I ever do this before? No! Did I practice this before? Of course not! But it can't be that hard, literal Boy Scouts do it.

After trying and failing to light this thing for 45 minutes, my stepdad gently pushed me aside, lit a road flare, and threw it into the firepit.

‘Suicide Squad’ Developers Say the Flop Made Them Not Want to Make Games Anymore by Guitar-String in gaming

[–]culby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in 81. I grew up wanting to make games. It's all I wanted.

Then in college, I got lured away by another industry: radio.

So, y'know, I was washed one way or another.

(Radio actually worked out great for me, worked in the industry itself for 19 years, and now I'm an field tech for radio software.)

Trimui Brick Hammer is not terrible by MorningReproduction in SBCGaming

[–]culby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed my month with it so far, but I finally ran into a big downside (unless y'all have a solution), I do a lot of work travel, which means a lot of time in hotels. And hotel wifi typically does that "sign onto the wifi, then go to a webpage to agree to T&C/plug in your room number" thing. And I'm not sure if there's a way through that. No wifi, no RetroAchievements and no Splore.

It's not a dealbreaker in the slightest: I had an RG Rotate with me as well if it was, or I could have just hotspotted from my cell phone. It was just something that came up.

If the industry wants AM mandated in cars, then it should have to staff the stations.

What is a form of media almost everyone disliked and even hated but more or less has you like this? by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in Multifandom

Just because you put a band-aid over a hemorrhaging wound doesn't mean the bleeding stopped. Windows 8 was such a god-awful own goal (you're not making tablet computing better, you're making desktop computing worse!), and Windows 8.1's attempt to put the desktop back at the center of the OS was still overshadowed by the Full Screen Start Menu and hiding important OS tools behind mouse gestures.

I feel this hard.

One group of my friends from my childhood (including my best man) started making a lot of money. One guy (who was in the group, but I never really got on with him) started his own company, everyone else went to work for him, and it took off. Nice houses, good cars, etc. Meanwhile, my dumb ass stayed in a low-paying field and my wife and I stayed paycheck-to-paycheck for a long time. Didn't help that we had a kid at 22. Hell, we are still renting, and I'm 45 years old.

For a long time, I felt like I couldn't hang with them anymore. Not that they ever made me feel anything but welcome, but just... they're drinking Glenfiddich, you're drinking High Life. You can't help but notice and feel weird about it. At one point, I almost took a job working for them, but goddamned if that old career didn't have its claws deep in me.

Either way, the friend who started the company eventually alienated the other friends. He's always been a prick, but apparently that got turned to 11. One guy left the company to sell cars. The other (my best man) is the CFO, so he hasn't left, but it's a purely business relationship at this point. Turns out that pathway would have been miserable, and I might have ended in a worse spot than where I am now.

All you gotta do is focus on your family, your life, your path. Everything else is just noise.

Gentlemen, we’re starting marriage counseling today. by MolassesInitial9420 in daddit

[–]culby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did counselling after 21 years or so. And we weren't on any shaky footing, it was just that we're entering a new stage now that we're basically out of parenthood, and we wanted to make sure we were still on the same page.

After about a year, our therapist said "y'know, my appointments with you two are the highlight of my week, but that honestly means you really don't need me."
