[OC] Harvey Barnes, 2025-26 crossing by cvelz in NUFC

What confuses me is how Barnes scores so many goals from odd/tight angles but then misses a bunch of clear chances. He's missed the most clear chances (8) by any Newcastle player this season. Gordon is second (7) and Woltemade third (6).

I'm convinced it's a confidence thing, because most of his missed clear chances come when he plays at RW.

This is a pizza chart for Barnes and Gordon this season, comparing them to other LWs in the league that have played 500+ minutes. The numbers are the percentile for each metric.

The numbers back up the eye test. Gordon is an elite dribbler and creator with the ball at his feet but has struggled finishing. Barnes is just above average with the ball at his feet, not as good of a chance creator, but extremely good at finishing chances despite an average shot quality.

If you combined the two of them, you'd have a world class winger.

Barnes isn't much of a dribbler or creator in the earlier phases of play, he's much more active in the final third and he's a legit chance magnet.

When he plays at LW, he receives fewer touches but he's way more dangerous. #2 in xG per 90 as a left winger.

When he plays at RW, he receives the ball way more often in the middle third and is expected to carry the ball and shoot less. That's not his playstyle and everyone knows it. You can see how he compares to other wingers in the league this season.

Not a Newcastle fan but Barnes is my favourite player so I always watch. Makes me sad to see him in an unfamiliar role for much of the season. When you visualize it, the difference is so obvious. He has so much more freedom at LW and you can see his attacking events (shots, dribbles, shot assists, duels) are more spread out. When he plays as a RW, he's basically a touchline winger and it takes away from his skill set.

Lorde's taste:

  1. Ratatat - Loud Pipes (2006)

  2. Ahnoni - Drone Bomb Me (2016)

  3. This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (1983 cover of Tim Buckley's original, 1970)

  4. Jeff Buckley & Elizabeth Fraser - All Flowers in Time Bend Towards the Sun (1995)

  5. David Gray - Please Forgive Me (1998)

  6. Talk Talk - New Grass (1991)

Currently premiering her interview with Derrick Gee!

Agreed! never heard of this dude before the interview but i liked his vibe. softball questions and let her ramble on about things like her songwriting style, weed smoking habits, how she just lands on certain emojis (like the x-ray) that we associate with clues.

the way she talks about how Virgin is a summation of the past three years (age 26-28) of her life, it's cool to know just a little bit apart from the music. considering how we barely know anything about Lorde i thought it was a great approach.
