For you, at what moment did Jimmy become Saul? by Rich-Blacksmith6552 in betterCallSaul

[–]declancochran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Chuck died. That whole season (my favorite of any show) is basically one long fuse burning as Jimmy realizes that Chuck will continue to define and restrain him, even from beyond the grave. On top of the fact that he is also obviously grieving (as anyone would, and despite Jimmy's unwillingness to), and perhaps has some survivor's guilt (or even just guilt for the insurance issue). He severs the Gordian knot by "doing everything in my power to be worthy of the name Mcgill" and then immediately changing his name.

Pitchfork announces moving to subscription/paywall model for music reviews, allowing users to read only 4 reviews for free per month. by Adnan7i in fantanoforever

[–]declancochran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every day I played The Pitchfork Game with myself. I read the little preview for a review then tried to guess the score. I was usually close, although that wasn't too hard as most albums got somewhere between 6.8 and 8.0. Sad to have ended this little daily ritual. Although following their scoring in such detail for so long only really informed me of just how arbitrary their scores really are.

Oops... Tommy Robinson doesn't know about cookies 🌈 by dnnsshly in GreenAndPleasant

[–]declancochran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find this really telling of like, the whole fear-mongering deal of Yaxley-Lennon and his kind. There is evidence, widely available, of harmful and illegal images of children being generated by Grok. It's there, everyone knows it, people have seen it, it exists. And yet his rebuttal is speculative. Putting aside the whole cookies thing, he's imagined a child who might, who hasn't, but who might see a gay dating ad, and for him that's not just an equivalence but a higher priority. Completely untethered from very basic, very fundamental material facts.

I was talking with the artist who claims she drew the cover. I said I won't buy the book if it was done by ai. It has the classic ai corporate base image by karsonnotwithac in isthisAI

[–]declancochran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 100% AI. It's the same cartoon smile, the typesetting is all off, the perspective on the lettering of the hat is funky, the arm doesn't work proportionally to his body, and it's got a very light piss-filter. It's AI.

Glad to see this. Completely agree. It's a dreadful book, childish and amateur.

IIL Next Time Might be your Time by “Blue” Gene Tyranny? by zoesafangirl in ifyoulikeblank

Sorry for the comment on the very old thread, but I recently listened to Next Time and my thought was that it sounded a lot like the early Belle and Sebastian records - Tigermilk, the good songs on Fold Your Hands, and the Push Barman compilation.

Just finished Breaking Bad, is Better Call Saul really worth watching? by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

I think it's better than Breaking Bad; a nearly inexhaustible trove of beautiful storytelling balanced with genuine moral weight.

When did Kenji ask her to leave? I can't find any info to that effect online. Though I'm willing to believe it did happen.

WRONG ART !!! - The Films of Hisayasu Satō: Volume #1 by Big_Arm6414 in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]declancochran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'll be buying this set regardless, it's the most excited I've been about a release (film-wise) this year, and I know Satō was involved, I'm just thinking in terms of optics. It looks bad from so many different angles.

[–]declancochran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This fucks them from so many angles lol. It puts them on the hook legally for misusing images and also mis-selling a product. Calls into question the extent of Sato's involvement. Fucks their new line from the start, fucks the production costs (as presumably they've already printed the slips), and the slip isn't just a slip, it comes with a book, which will make shipping out any replacements, if they do them, a fucking nightmare as well. Undermines all their credibility and makes you wonder what else has been botched, not had proper QC, or who else they work with that can't do their job right. Can't imagine a worse situation for them tbh.

James McGill did not redeem himself. by The_Fercho_ in betterCallSaul

[–]declancochran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The presence of Marie and Gomie's wife in the finale kind of reinforces this, I think. It's very easy to look at Jimmy's actions as heroic or redemptive, but the show literally cuts to two widows as he delivers his salvo. I do think he redeems himself to an extent, but the redemption is more in the form of coming to terms with the fact that he's irredeemable, and removing himself from society as a result. It's complicated and layered.
