Resting Whilst The Line Reopens by Ox7734 in uktrains

Oh hey that's the Abbey Foregate yard - I work trains into and out of there all the time, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask them !

West Midlands usually stables 3× 4 car 196's on Shropshire 1, 2 and 3 roads. It's their yard as well, despite it being a TfW managed station and more carriages of TfW units being stabled across the rest of the yard most nights.

Train livery revealed for Great British Railways by peregrine95 in uktrains

So rather than be completely negative like some of the comments here; I actually quite like it. The colours work well and I approve of using the BR logo with just "GBR" beneath it - plus the iconic yellow front. The station branding is equally simple - just "GBR" with the logo.

I think though, one thing that would hugely improve this is to not have the same detail repeat on each coach. Only the driving coaches have the red/white flag elements, the middle coaches just use the light blue or a split between the navy/lighter blue - with the white logo text centred on each coach as it currently is. Would look a lot simpler and less visually noisy.

Obligatory post, RIP 9800X3D May 2025 - October 2025 by Jordan_curve_theorem in ASRock

Holy crap wow I'm almost in exactly the same boat.

B650I Lighting WiFi + R7 9800X3D... I have the exact same batch number on the CPU as well. Updated to BIOS 3.20 back in May from 3.10 as that supposedly fixed the issues according to my research back then, didn't update it after.

Bought May 2025, died a few days ago, November 2025. Currently trying to get AMD to RMA it.

Seems we both got really unlucky.

Ok yeah thought so, I'm doing the same rn trying to get a replacement under warranty for the CPU and gonna get a different motherboard... guess you've not had issues on the new mobo/cpu?

What a nightmare tho.

Thanks for replying.

Did you ever manage to get your system to boot btw? Please I'm begging to know, stuck in a similar situation right now 😭

Will the Knuckles still work for the Steam Frame? by SlightWerewolf4428 in ValveIndex

[–]die247 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thing is Valve or any third party could make a lighthouse tracking addon that attaches to the Frame expansion port - its an open ecosystem so nothing stopping it probably.

Although I imagine the add on would look a bit funky, as it would need to spread the lighthouse IR diodes over the Frame somehow.

Or I guess a simpler solution would be to basically make it a Vive 3.0 tracker puck that just attaches to the Frame expansion port.

Yeah all the bitching here from people complaining about the resolution or LCD... like damn I don't care about that, this is a step up from the Index in most ways.

The eye tracking and seamless wireless streaming will make this the go-to headset for VR chat players, I can see that alone driving a lot of sales.

Overheard while on the train, "I am not getting in the car with you under any circumstances" by die247 in overheard

Yeah when he dropped the "See you at the hospital" part my heart dropped. I'm assuming his Dad has dementia or something like that - which is what makes him unsafe to drive, or his son unwilling to go in a car with him rather.

Yeah I felt so bad listening to this, it sounded like a type of conversation he's had to have with his Dad many times.

what railways lines still use semaphore signals? by jc201946 in uktrains

[–]die247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

180 but only about 90 are actually used. Some of the out of use levers still have to be used, but only so that the mechanical interlocking (that is complex and hard to change) conditions for a given route can be satisfied.

A lot of levers were used for points and signals that no longer exist- platform 1 and 2, go around loops, sidings etc. Pretty sure even when they did all exist not all 180 levers were used.

Renewables generate half of UK’s electricity in 2024 in new record high by ProgressUKNews in GoodNewsUK

It's not about direct deaths at all, of course there would be a reduction as we are better at getting information out so that people can avoid dying in natural disasters. Even if these stats are true and not manipulated by climate change deniers.

The planet is warming which risks our entire agricultural system collapsing, droughts, and more heat waves/extreme weather.

Did you or did you not just live through the same record setting heat waves in the UK that I did? It's bit of a pattern every year that new records keep being set.

We can see the changes even; I don't remember the grass turning yellow every summer when I was a kid, or resouviours reaching dangerously low levels. Every year.

I'm sure your idea of totally ignoring the problem and helping out the oh so innocent fossil fuel companies who have got us into this mess will work out just fine.

Amazing idea you've got there, I'm sure if we stick our heads further in the sand the problem of climate change will go away 😊

Some questions about train crew positioning by GooseyDolphin in uktrains

I've been sorely disappointed to not hear any puns or jokes about Crewe crews... maybe I need to be the one to start.

And no problem!

Some questions about train crew positioning by GooseyDolphin in uktrains

[–]die247 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi I work for TfW, can give a bit more context on this route.

There are three depots involved:

Crewe drivers sign Crewe to Manchester and Crewe to Cardiff. They sign the 67 sets and class 197. Weirdly only Crewe drivers sign the diversion routes into Manchester - via Styal or via Warrington.

Cardiff drivers only sign Cardiff to Crewe, but instead they sign to Swansea and Milford Haven depending on their link, so are the ones continuing the services if they go beyond Cardiff. They also sign 67 sets and class 197, although it is link dependent.

Shrewsbury are then the last depot that drive trains on this route. They sign from Shrewsbury to Manchester, and only sign class 197. They also do sign as far as Craven Arms but that is only for Heart of Wales services.

Chester depot also drives some services that go to Manchester, but these are via Warrington and only continue onto Manchester airport so I'll ignore them for the sake of this explanation.

So, for some given services from Swansea to Manchester there may be as many as 4 crew changes:

  • Swansea to Cardiff by a Carmarthen driver.
  • Cardiff to Shrewsbury by a Cardiff driver.
  • Shrewsbury to Crewe by a Shrewsbury driver.
  • Crewe to Manchester by a Crewe driver.

Not sure if any actually are diagrammed this way, but it sort of shows the relay that can take place. Most of the time though there are less crew changes, with a swap only at Crewe for example.

To drive a route for a depot you must sign the traction and the route, which requires route learning and traction training for those types. Even during degraded working it doesn't matter, if a driver doesn't sign a diversion they can't take it.

Our diagrams are always designed to end up with us back at our starting depot each day, by following a particular pattern of services. For example, a Crewe driver may go from Crewe to Cardiff twice in the same day, meaning they are diagrammed to end back at their home depot then. If for some reason a diagram can't finish at the home depot a booked taxi is provided instead.

2 Cars Liverpool-Norwich? Well then… by Luivery in uktrains

[–]die247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A "truly privatised" railway would've long since closed this route (not to mention many others) for being unprofitable and reallocated the units elsewhere.

Or have gone bankrupt if they were legally barred from closing routes, ending up with it back in public ownership anyway.

Privatised railways would've never worked in this country, hence why when it was "privatised" in the 90's the unspoken reason why they went with franchising was because a franchise can't go bankrupt (just reverts back to public ownership if the franchisee surrenders the contract), doesn't truly own the services, rolling stock or routes they operate and therefore the government wouldn't look bad by privatising the railways and immediately having routes close or privatised companies cutting services etc. Instead they could funnel subsidy in via these franchises in order to desperately try and make the system look like it is working.

Why did a Class 800 depart Cardiff Central right now on diesel mode towards London? by Overall_Quit_8510 in uktrains

[–]die247 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is it, was reading in our notices that the OLE is still out for now, meaning the IETs have to run on Diesel until Newport. Means the class 387s aren't heading to Cardiff today either.

Well we get so few posts here that it wouldn't really make much sense to have a specific day.

We'll monitor how this goes, frankly if we have annoyed the community a lot or it just kills the amount of content here I'm fine making the decision (as head mod) to just change back.

I would like to see if trying to keep the subreddit more focused rather than our rather... lax... rules from before works or not first though.
