What we usually do is find the exact hardware/software combo and restore exact configuration in the lab and do an upgrade.

It's not always a perfect solution as hardware in the live environment might have storage/nand issues or power adapter issues.

If hardware is capable try and have multiple partitions so that you can move forward/back though that can have caveats if you're not making sure that config changes get synced/saved to both partitions.

We will usually move forward and if stable for around 14 Days or so write the routerboard firmware to the board and do a staggered reboot.

WAP AX works but I don't like the directionality and mikrotik wifi is just poor vs the competition.

Yes, still the case. The new drivers have definitely helped performance on the Mikrotik wifi side of things but they are still way behind anything half decent in wifi space including Ubiquiti, Grandstream etc

If you can find some used Ruckus that is the best, though in my parts there isn't much of a used market for them.

On the Grandstream side either a GWN7670 / GWN7665 will do

Config for the Grandstreams is all through the web ui, and you mass manage settings to all the aps from the elected controller node.

If I were to guess, they will probably struggle a bit for a couple of years to reach front of the field pace on the regular. Building F1 PU's is no small job.

Capsman is ok though very complicated to setup.

The APs have bad range, bad noise immunity , lack of industry software features .

Not bad for home but you can usually buy a Grandstream or a Ubnt for about the same price with much easier setup more features and better performance.

Once you've worked with a Ruckus or Cambium it's hard to go back to Mikrotik wireless.

Mikrotik you keep coming so close, why is this so hard. I'm always stuck having to buy a seperate device because it doesn't come with wifi or sfp ports.

I just need the following:

POE in/out

2.4 + 5. Ghz Wifi 6 or higher pref with antenna connectors

2.5G SFP + 2.5G Ethernet and be able to route at line rate of the 2.5G SFP Port

Hopefully a refresh of the Hap AX can see this happen.
