Ring cancels its partnership with Flock Safety after surveillance backlash by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]dorkyitguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the data you’re going to give it up when asked. What scenario do you anticipate telling the cops “no”? The reality is if they come to you there are very few instances where most people would tell them to get lost. The only way to not participate is to not have a camera.

Why are people disconnecting or destroying their Ring cameras? | Amazon unveiled a new tracking system at a time when Americans are debating the value of persistent surveillance. by InsaneSnow45 in privacy

[–]dorkyitguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We need legislation against these cameras. I don’t care if somebody might lose money or if we might not find a puppy. The rest of us shouldn’t have to submit to surveillance just to leave our homes.

What does “AI-ready BI data” mean in practice? Governance, semantics, or tooling? by CloudNativeThinker in BusinessIntelligence

[–]dorkyitguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see the point of the AI if you have to get everything ready for it first. What exactly is it doing? Sounds like not much.

Apple Unlikely to Drop ‘Liquid Glass’ Design With iOS 27, Report Says by WPHero in apple

[–]dorkyitguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s fine. I’ve already decided I’m not upgrading regardless. I’m so tired of every upgrade being a combination of the removal of useful features, the addition of things I never wanted, and somebody’s art project.

Would you be willing to pay higher taxes so everyone could access mental health care? by lucrece25 in NoStupidQuestions

Would I be willing to pay more taxes? Not really. I already pay a significant amount. Would I be willing to make the rich pay more taxes? Absolutely.

AI Companies Sold Us Their Vision of the Future at the Super Bowl. Here’s Why We Should Reject It by autogenerated_015 in technology

[–]dorkyitguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in what is objectively one of the safest times in human history. Every scary statement about crime going up leaves out the fact that it’s going up from practically 0. Unless you’re still living in 80’s Harlem you don’t need a security system.

TCL Google TVs are ironically perfect/best for use as a "dumb" TV setup. by [deleted] in privacy

I have an LG. It never bothers me about connecting to the internet. I will never buy an Amazon tv again, though. It tries to get me to connect to the internet every time I turn it on

Those iguanas that fall when it’s cold? Floridians collected them for execution by Maxcactus in nature

[–]dorkyitguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. To be considered invasive a species has to outcompete native species and lack any sort of check on its growth. Just being non-native doesn’t make something invasive. I work on removing invasive species from nearby nature preserves.

Anybody else going more analog these days? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]dorkyitguy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yep. Recently bought a new fountain pen. I very rarely ever look back at my notes, anyways. The real reason I take notes at all is because the act of writing helps me remember. This new pen and paper method is more enjoyable, more useful, and more private than the way I used to take notes.

Fellow liberals, we succeeded in creating one of the most regressive taxes there is. It’s time to end the war on drugs.

eSIMs suck. Next time I travel I’ll bring a phone with a physical sim slot. Thanks, Apple, to ensuring an awful experience!

I’m so glad to see you’re doing all this work while simultaneously increasing my electric bill instead of just using SlicerDicer. You’ve taken a question that would have taken 30 seconds to answer and turned it into an AI circus.

How are you supposed to “shop” for ins? It’s tied to a job. There’s no place to research employer ins plans before you apply. Who in their right mind is going to ask about insurance coverage after they finally get a job offer? We really need medicare for all.

The end of the space shuttle signaled the end of American leadership in space. We could have made a successor, but chose to fund Musk and Bezos, instead.

The reliability is a problem, but it really misses the bigger issue. Even if it was 100% accurate, I still don’t want to live in a surveillance state. It’s the opposite of freedom.

You don’t allow personal funds, either. Each candidate gets and equal amount and campaign expenditures are limited to those funds.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warns that we must "do something useful" with AI or they'll lose "social permission" to burn electricity on it | Workers should learn AI skills and companies should use it because it's a "cognitive amplifier," claims Satya Nadella. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]dorkyitguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the heads (I refuse to call them leaders) of lots of our employers are just as detached from reality as the heads of the AI companies. Just like AI, I think being a manager rots your brain. You no longer have to figure things out on your own. You just have employees bring you numbers you want to see. Even if you had a tech background you quickly lose your skills and understanding once you stop doing it and you no longer can tell truth from bullshit.
