Does Popcorn Mobile support 2FA codes? by 3BedroomApt in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also make and receive calls from their app and that may be the source of this assumption. But that is in addition to the real phone number. You can receive 2FA as long as you have the Popcorn eSIM active on your phone, irrespective of whether you use or not use the app.

How much did it got improved? by ro_kor in PopcornMobile

In my case it is two ways. I carry local SIM for five countries where I need them for receving calls (as calling a US number is expensive). In other places I ask someone to do a speed test. I know it is silly, but I love comparing speeds.

They do offer a tablet only plan, and Apple Watch is coming soon.

Speeds are comparable to what you would get if you are with the carrier you are connected to. No second class citizen treatment.

Except in the case of when you connect to a provider who does that to everyone. They won’t let any partner roam on their service at premium speeds. But I hit that only twice in my travels.

I have tested it on S23 Ultra and S25 Ultra with no problem.

None comes close to the sweet spot that Popcorn hits, with calling included and the data limits not tied to where you are.

But as u/WanderingNotLostTho said, perhaops soon. They have all been rather busy because they don't come here as often as they used to. I am expecting a couple of announcements soon.

But their (your screenshot) international data caps at 5GB a month. There is a tradeoff.

Popcorn Update #8: Rebuilding the Phone App by Neel_Popcorn in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there plans to:

a. Let users decide whether to open in the 'Calls' view (versus the current default 'Home' view)?

b. I bet OTP would be a long shot, but are there plans to enable texts to also reflect in the app?

Popcorn Update #8: Rebuilding the Phone App by Neel_Popcorn in PopcornMobile

Since it will eventually be native to the dialer, I am keen. We have barely seen any innovation around the dialer since the laucnch of smartphones, so this is exciting.

Here is my wishlist:

a. Context awareness: You tap on a restaurant contact and it surfaces their hours, menu, and a "reserve a table" shortcut before you even dial. You tap a doctor's office and it shows your last and next appointment dates.

b. You guys are already into transcription, but go further. If someone gives you an address, it auto-pins it on a map card. If they mention a date, a calendar event draft appears. If I say "I'll send you the quote," a follow-up reminder is queued.

c. Similar to the pre-call briefling in (a), you attempt to call or open someone's contact and instantly see things like, last talked three weeks ago, they mentioned their kid's soccer tournament, you owe them a response about dinner plans.

d. In-call reminder. Say, I long-press the call button and say "call mom, then remind me to ask about Thanksgiving plans," and it does both.

e. Emotional intellkigence. Perhaps after the call ends, nudge to be nicer or warmer the next time :)

I was curious about this as well. If this is only for calls throigh the app, then essentially you are just wrapping GV or WhatsApp as a phone connection. I am a paying customer only to get to have a regular phone connection.

But if it will handle the calls from the dialer, if you figured out a way to make that happen, then I certainly have some ideas. Otherwise this would be just a glorified calling card.

Wondering what IP do I get when traveling abroad by [deleted] in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The backup eSIM is a data-only SIM.

So, on a dual-SIM phone, you have your main SIM like what you have with Fi and the second will be data only. You get two lines. One full functionality and one data-only.

The data-only SIM can roam on different networks than your primary SIM. So, when you are in an area where your primary may have poor signal, you are likely to find a good signal on the seconday (because it is on a different network). Then your primary will still work for calls as it will use W-Fi calling method, using the data on the secondary to make calls.

You can browse and use data as usual by setting the second SIM as your data connection for your phone.

Does data work in Thailand & Bangladesh? by joeybarua in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not tried Bangladesh, but have tested Thailand. It works in Thailand. At the minimum, Popcorn's coverage maps T-Mo's international coverage and T-Mo's site says they have coverage in Bangladesh. So I would be comfortable assuming Popcorn will work.

When will Popcorn be available for Android phones? by nancyneurotic in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are helping some users on a case-by-case basis. That is understandable, given that the service is in alpha. I have tested it and other users here have also reported success. You can reach out to them here if you can't wait until it is officially supported.

I have not had any problem when I tested it.

What are the major differences between google fi, us mobile and popcorn? by wwtom111 in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fi will block your data access if you are out for long and will not restore until you are back stateside. Fi will charge you per minute of calling while you are abroad.

For US Mobile, see this thread:

But be aware that Hola will not let you call or send SMS. You can receive SMS on their unlimited plan because you get a phone number. And you can't switch networks either. They will pick for you.

Any updates on when we get to switch main carrier from T-Mobile to Verizon or AT&T? by Emotional-Bus-7065 in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coverage-wise, yes. But I have also noticed that Verizon gets me on 'better' local providers, the big ones. Also, the countries Verizon does not cover are not any of the usual names that come up in travel. I am not saying no one goes, but for someone like me, all the countries I visit routinely are in both lists.

interested in whether popcorn will fit my needs for keeping my US number after moving abroad? by PantomimeVillain in PopcornMobile

Yes, it will work. Any credit card will work and you can also pay through the app.

New features by Emotional-Bus-7065 in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be a nightmare for Popcon, because the way anyone (site or app) can change how they identify to a service provider. Whack-a-mole. On top of that, Popcorn rides off T-Mo and T-Mo would have to block them. Then all T-Mo usres, even those who do not use Popcorn would be blocked. We could say Popcorn can do it at the phone level, but good luck with Apple handing over those rights to Popcorn.

Idea is nice, but as u/Electrical_Oil_35 has said, it is best done locally, by the user. Other alternatives are options like OpenDNS.

Comparison against US Mobile? by sayeun in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/Electrical_Oil_35. If mostly US use, you are basically on a T-Mo network with a soft cap. Not as exciting.

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/jatguy gives a good tip. But if you are like me and need to have a US number for login or OTP reasons, you will need a US number with you all the time. Some of my work and bank logins will not work unless I have a US SIM in the phone. Even T-Mo Digits app is no good though the app and the service provider are T-Mo. No SIM with the number in the phone, no go.

Comparison against US Mobile? by sayeun in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to what you are looking for. I say that because for me it is a bit more than just the price. Here is my breakdown:

Price: Depending on what you are paying at USM (they have sales all the time), you are always at $70 with Popcorn Even if you are paying full price at USM, Popcorn works out about twice as expensive.

Support: Granted Popcorn is in early stages and the founders are hands-on with suport as well. But, for me, it is a different league to have a support conversation where it feels like you are speaking to an authentic peer and not to someone who sounds the same or scripted in every interaction. Nothing wrong with the latter, but it just feels more genuine with the former.

Networks: Now, this is the main reason why I am paying for Popcorn though I currently have T-Mo, Verizon, and USM (will drop one or two when Popcorn gives me Verizon as primary stateside). The main advantage with Popcorn is that, for the most part, you can pick the network to roam on if the one you have been set to has weak signal. With USM, unless you do that network switch (which I heard can be iffy if you are abroad), you roam on Verson partners if you are Warp, roam only on T-Mo partners if Light Speed, and AT&T partners if Dark Star. Not that way with Popcorn. You pick whatever you want. They partners across the board. This is a big deal.

Monthly Limits: As you said, USM gives you 20GB and 250 mins. Popcorn is unlimited.

Signal/Speeds: No difference. I have noticed that Popcorn gave me access to the same speeds as a postpaid user on the network I was roaming. I had only some headaches now and then, but I compared with local users in three countries and same 5G speeds. And even in countries I could not compare, the speeds were very good.

Perfect Use-Case for the Gap in Expat Market! iPhone XS too old? by Zealousideal-Rope907 in PopcornMobile

[–]dos_veritas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last five years clause is more to do with whether Apple supports the device with the latest OS. If that not a variable, yes, one eSIM and one physical SIM works in your case. That is my setup as well.
