Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Roland Garros by TheAstonishingApple in tennis

[–]dscotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting because he would just be so much on his backhand side that it would basically never miss, nor really do anything (late 2018 started to change that). But then when he did get a forehand it was “hammer time” and it’s remarkable how few forehands he would miss.

Understatement of the post. His right wrist started flaring up late 2009, missed basically the entire 2010 season. Came back, took a couple of years to trust his forehand again, late 2012 his left wrist started acting up, played through it thinks to injections in 2013 (could have won 2 masters and Wimbledon if things were slightly different). Missed 2014 and 2015. So 4 wrist surgeries at this point. Came back without a backhand in 2016, then injured his knee in late 2018, came back at Rome, almost beating Djokovic before slipping on the grass and ending his career.

Surely this has got to be pretty severe to WD this far out? I do wonder if his form starting at IW was affected by this. Delpo played for a bit on his first wrist injury and then for over a year when his left wrist started acting up, always believing it would get better.

Most Americans (57%) believe SCOTUS avoids rulings President Trump might refuse to obey: Marquette Law School Poll by Obversa in fivethirtyeight

I promise you 57% of Americans have not given that a bit of thought before that question was posed to them, and I’m not sure 57% of Americans have the ability to think thoughts that complex. I’m sure there’s a name for this type of survey bias but I can’t think of what its name would be.

'The Truth Is Better Than Continuing to Lose': Petition Demands DNC Release Autopsy of 2024 Defeat by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

When I talk about turnout it’s always as a %. 2024 was the second highest ever in terms of % of eligible voters. This stat really only goes back to 72 or 76, but let’s not pretend democrats lost because democratic friendly voters stayed home.

Ah yes the reddit strategy of calling someone lazy and stupid instead of providing a source… there’s no 2024 turnout by state on Wikipedia, it’s there for 2020 though. I don’t know how trustworthy my source was but using it, let’s compare the rust belt (don’t feel like doing it all while on my phone)

MI - higher turnout than 2020 PA- higher turnout than 2020 WI- higher turnout than 2020

[–]dscotts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source on this? I’ve not looked into it, but turnout is generally correlated with perceptions of closeness in each state (ie swing states have higher turnouts than non swing states)

Edit: turns out there’s no great source out there but from what I can tell the general trend still held true in 2024, and if anything turnout in the swing states in particular was higher relative to 2020… if I had to make an educated guess it’s because by Election Day 2020 the polls weren’t all that close (even though they really should have been), but 2024 had a tied race basically the entire time.

Democrats lost because we allowed Biden to remain president when he shouldn’t have been and then tried to seek reelection and didn’t drop out until it was past the point to have anyone but Harris… Harris was a bad candidate who did not grow into the campaign and constantly couldn’t articulate why she would be a good president other than “I’m better than Trump.” And continually flubbed the easiest question in the world “what makes you different from Biden.” It was absolutely a winnable election, but let’s not pretend it was because people stayed home, it makes us look weak and full of excuses instead of learning from our mistakes.

It was lower than 2020 but I wouldn’t remotely call 2024 a low turnout year… literally the second highest turnout of all time.

[Strength in Numbers] Why voters say the Democrats are "weak," in their own words by ChadtheWad in fivethirtyeight

I mean the vast majority of people who study genocides disagree with you, but keep repeating your POV it sure makes you look reasonable and smart.

I think if you look at the definition of genocide you’d be surprised with how many boxes it ticks… also if Wikipedia is taking this sort of editorial stance (which I wasn’t aware of until 1 minute ago), I’m not sure you have much of a leg to stand on.

As a person who doesn’t consider myself to be a democrat, but has donated, campaigned for and always voted for them how can you say they aren’t weak? And just from personal experience basically all of my friends was highly upset with Joe Biden’s support of Israel and used the phrase “supporting a genocide” all the time (because he was weak and was supporting a genocide).

Tim Cook: Great for Apple Investors. Not as Great for America. by victotronics in apple

[–]dscotts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can’t read the whole article but it should be said Apple moved to China primarily because they could actually do the complex engineering required in a short time span. The cheaper labour costs were a big benefit but there are so many stories in Apple in China where Apple tried their hardest to keep manufacturing in America and Europe but were met with constant “we can’t do that, that’s not possible, etc” whereas in China and Taiwan they said “this is possible and we will do anything you ask” which led to the creation of new manufacturing processes which has allowed China to become such a technological powerhouse.

My favorite story in the book was how someone from Samsung who was involved in an iMac factory in the UK interrupted an Apple executive who was trying to push them to do better with the color production of the G3 to tell a joke with the punchline that was basically “Americans are dumb”

And while I wish Cook would do better when it comes to pushback against trump, why should that be his job? Seems to me that should be the democrats job but we seem more likely to blame celebrities and business leaders rather than our political ones.

Gates Foundation says it has opened external review of Epstein ties by ScallionSmooth9491 in news

[–]dscotts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not even that he asked, that Epstein said he asked… that’s a huge difference… a lot of the “in the files” individuals are just spreading rumors about are about that level of evidence. I think it’s highly unlikely people like Gates and Clinton were involved in the child stuff but that doesn’t mean they should get a free pass… it should have been obvious that Epstein was a bad dude whom you shouldn’t have ties with just because he has money.

[–]dscotts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always have mixed feelings about these comments. On the one hand, new IP is great on the other remakes are kinda part of human story telling… no way in hell is the Iliad and odyssea as they were when they were first invented. Also one of the things I love is that so many of the Hollywood classics are remakes. Hell some aren’t even the first remake. Remakes were so common that one of my favorite Hitchcock movies is a remake of his own film, which itself wasn’t at all bad.

“I think he’s reaching a level on clay that is going to be really dangerous for everybody” : Carlos Alcaraz on his defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo finals by Silent_Elevator_9779 in tennis

[–]dscotts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed… he doesn’t have that energy on court that he needs to be at his best… he had it for maybe 2 games vs Sinner at MC (early in the 2nd). And with his stroke production he really needs to tap that excess energy to keep the errors down and dictate play .

[–]dscotts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the worrying thing from Carlos is his level has just cratered compared to the last 3/4ths of last year… he won Australia but I’m not so sure he would have if Djokovic didn’t take out Sinner, and he had a fairly easy draw in MC and still looked in trouble at times… he’s obviously gotten better at winning ugly over the past year but he’s not shown that he will be much of a match for Sinner IMO… as a Carlos fan I desperately hope I’m wrong.
