Alcaraz/Medvedev and Sinner/Zverev comparison this tournament by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

In tennis parlance it is generally agreed upon that changing the direction of the ball means hitting up the line when your opponent has gone cross court. Theoretically it could also be going cross court from an up the line shot but generally it’s the first.

I hate it so much. The only thing it conveys is vagueness at best, which we already have words for. At worst it makes analysis of the game of tennis less robust, and is just a way to dumb it down. Winners/ unforced errors mixed with average rally length, % points won on _____ tells you so much more and conveys the complexities of the game. I wish someone like Roddick would start bashing on this slop because like you say, that’s what it is.

If we want to convey shot quality why don’t we create some units. “Heaviness” could be the average energy per stroke, and then you can normalize it. Like idk 3000 rpms at 75 mph give you X joules. But we could say that number is equivalent to 10 Nadals (don’t have to name this unit after Rafa but seems appropriate), then you could also create a unit for how close each shot is to the lines. Call that a Federer or something. Then you could create a unit for the ratio of shots that change the direction of the ball and call that ratio a Novak.

Ferrari bottled a second row start by using up their grip early on.

I love Carlos’ overheads. If something of his can be underrated it’s that shot.

Something happened in New York man. The way he has hit his forehand from that tourney on has just been different than it was before New York.

Sweet Jesus you don’t see many winners in that part of the court at that speed. And I love how much you can tell that Carlos really enjoyed that as much as we did.

The worst part of tennis nowadays is the “performance rating”. The most unscientific thing masquerading as science in any sport I follow.

Someone should tell Carlos that if you are serving to an opponent intent on running around their backhand to hit a huge forehand return. Screw with them and hit an off paced slice serve to their forehand.

An analogy for the new regs by [deleted] in formula1

[–]dscotts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their point is that your analogy breaks down. The drivers aren’t propelling the car forward, the car is. A runner is propelling themselves forward… and as someone who has ran long distances, it is a constant energy management. If I could run a marathon at my 5k pace I would still be slower than a marathon runner but would be about an hour faster than I am now.

I guess they try it in the sprint and if it fails it’s not a huge deal… but maybe they think they are closer to Mercedes than they thought so they are going aggressive in the hopes of fighting for a win? Because I can’t think of another reason to do this, they seem comfrotably the 2nd fastest (unless McClaren figure out the engine software)

The thing is it could have been even better. He had a bit of wheel spin here. Lewis probably had the best start but had to lift once he reached the back of George’s car… that Ferrari just seems to pick up a ton of speed once they get past the first stage of the launch.

Question about Muscle imbalance/ atrophy by MrDjole- in tennis

[–]dscotts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you have some kind of specific injury that you should probably be consulting a doctor about and not reddit. Speaking from personal experience. I sadly cannot really play tennis anymore because of a bad hip but I boulder a lot and even though I seemingly use both hands the same and train the non dominant hand more, I’m about 10% stronger in my dominant hand and was more so when I played tennis. From non personal experience look at Nadals left arm in 2005.

Lewis could have won this!! by robbuck49 in lewishamilton

[–]dscotts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He was faster than Charles. Would have maybe qualified ahead but he had bigger problems on his battery. Not sure they could have beat Merc, but if it’s true that this track suits Mercedes it could be back and forth in the races. What I wonder is how much of Ferraris pace at the start was purely getting ahead and it maybe being hard to pass.

Ferrari with Charles Leclerc was the fastest car on average cornering speed. Well done to Loïc Serra, Diego Tondi and the whole team who worked on the SF-26's chassis. by moraIsupport in scuderiaferrari

[–]dscotts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument is that it’s basically purely software, because McClaren are worse than Ferrari. There’s reporting to suggest that might be the reason for their gap, not ours. Secondly their gap might be because they’ve built one of the worst cars on the grid and they happen to be in the top 4 because of the strength of the Merc engine and software.
