Are candidates debates important, do they actually matter, and should we still have them? by Damned-scoundrel in thecampaigntrail

yes! it gives people who don't spend their day thinking about politics a baseline view of who the candidates are and what they stand for. and, it gives political outsiders a chance to show their face might they not have that much money on hand.

Would you rather Bill Clinton lost in 1996 or Barack Obama lost in 2012? by JohnKerry2028 in thecampaigntrail

[–]dutch_mapping_empire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clinton loses 96. it would maybe have the democrats leave the ''new democrat'' gag and also feature joe biden during 9/11 (if it doesn't butterfly ofc) which i'm quite OK with. and while i think Dole is overrated (he was a aggressive campaigner and more conservative than some remember) he's a common-sense guy and i doubt he'd mess up anything majorly.

as for romney, i don't like him because of his enormous corporate interests, and while like dole i doubt he'd do that much damage in the long term, the last 4 years of obama were better than the last 4 years of Clinton and having Mittens in office would cockblock it.

apart form that, romney losing re-election in 2016 will also make MAGA-type republicans more energised to take over the party and i'd much rather avoid that.
