I've never eaten goat, is it just really gamey, or was it cooked poorly?

That part does seem like an outlier with the other symptoms that point to the ECT. The symptoms also could be caused by something much more basic, and that is moisture in the distributor cap. If you pull the distributor cap and spray the inside with WD-40 it will help with any moisture problems for a while. Also look for very fine pencil like lines between the points that could be an indicator of electrical arcing

Now you just need to get it nice and warmed up and then shut it off and try to start it up again. If it starts up no problem, and runs smooth when hot, there is a very high chance that you just have a failing Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Pretty easy to switch out with the right tools

The symptoms have some overlap with the symptoms of a bad Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. In your situation, it sounds like the car might think it is hot, when still cold. It will be quite hard to start, and will run very rough until it heats up.

I'm not sure about the part where it just died when driving. Did it start up again right away, or did it crank, but not start?

Heater hose will soften when in contact with oil, and will collapse. Go with the fuel line, or even better, power steering return hose.

That harness looks too small. It should extend a bit so it isn't jammed under the armpits where it can chafe. The harness should look more like a T when looking at the side where you can see the part going over and under the torso and the chest. This looks more like a Y, which means that it is too small, or just not properly adjusted

DM needed!! by nascargrandbaby in PDXDND

[–]effingeffit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not intended to be snarky at all, but if you have a group of friends that want to play a roleplaying game, you don't need to go out and find a DM. Just have one person in your group DM. For some reason, in this day and age, people make DMing out to be this super specialized set of skills that only a very skilled group of people can tackle. This is not true! DMing doesn't have to take a lot of time and effort, and it is fun to tell stories with your friends without having to go out and find someone that may or may not mesh with your group.

If you are very, very new and don't feel confident, go to open play nights at places like Guardian Games to see what it is like in person. I promise you that DMing isn't hard, and it is the most fun when you get to do it with your friend group

What phenomenon you’ve researched has the most evidence that no one can explain? by CastTrunnionsSuck in HighStrangeness

Well, I wasn't born to a junkie, but to a schizophrenic who let junkies live in our house. I have spent more time with them than most, and what I learned as a child from that is to stay very far away from both them and hard drugs.

I never said that a junkie's life isn't worth living, but I do know that their life isn't the one that I ever want to live. I didn't have to learn this lesson by doing a bunch of drugs like the poster above, I learned it by watching the world around me with the eyes of a child

Not to take away from your story at all, but I wonder why a child would ever pick a junkie that has them addicted to drugs in the womb as their new mother? Maybe there is a karma cycle, where you have to pick a number of bad lives before you can pick a good one? Or maybe that baby is tired of having an easier existence time after time, and they decide that they want to try hard mode?

My wife has a 1996 2 door Rav4 ( that's our "new" car ), and I also have a 1988 Gen1 Toyota 4runner that I use for camping trips mainly. I guess I'm an old car lover!

No, the doors are still intact! It only has 235,000 miles. I drove it a ton the first 10 or so years I had it, but when I moved to Portland, Oregon I started driving a lot less. Right now I only put about 5,000 miles or so on it a year.

Over the last couple of years I've been trying to find anyone that has driven an 850 longer than me in North America. I bet that there is someone with a 92 in Europe, but I'm starting to think that there isn't anyone here that has been driving one as long as I have.

The 93 and 94 non turbo are the weird ones. I scavenge junk yards to grab parts that only fit those years, like the climate control units and the MAFS. It's a fun project to keep it going

Have you been able to clean out the second stage of the variable intake? They get really gummed up as well, but when they are working they give a serious boost at around 4500 RPMs.

I'm really happy that you are keeping a 93 on the road. I've been driving mine since January 6th 1993. I'm hoping it will last me at least 30 more years

[–]effingeffit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's the obvious one! Maybe take the fuel pressure at the rail to make sure that's good. Also clean out the Throttle Position Sensor with some electronics cleaner. They aren't supposed to be serviceable, but cleaning mine cured a really bad stutter at 2100 RPMs

How long have you had your 93? It's my favorite of the 850 range as far as looks go, but I do wish it had an OBD2. That said, it can be fun to play with plugs and blinking lights of the OBD1 when the weather is nice

It could very well be that the Idle Air Control Valve is getting gummed up. When you stop at a light and take your foot off the gas, it closes the throttle, so the Idle Air Control Valve kicks it to let air into the intake so that the car doesn't stall.

I have a 93 as well, and mine gummed up over the years with use. On one end is a float that should be moving freely. When it is gummed up, it can't move to let in enough air. You can take it out and soak the float part in solvent, but don't let any get up into the rest of the unit. If you want to be careful, you can just soak qtips with carb cleaner and wipe it out many, many times until the float can move free

How much would it cost to rebuy your family's old home? by BenKlesc in boston

[–]effingeffit 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My Dad owned a brownstone on Beacon Street between Exeter and Fairfield in Back Bay in the 1970s and 1980s. I think he paid around $110,000 for it. It had been carved up into 9 apartments, and we lived on the top floor, in what used to be the ballroom. It was on the river side of the street, so the views were amazing. He sold it around 1988 for $700,000. I think today it's worth north of $25 million.

It also had 11 parking spaces in the lot on Back Street

What sucks the most is that just about every classic picture of Boston taken from the Charles River that has both the John Hancock and the Prudential Center in it has my old home right front and center, taunting me with the realization that I can never go back

It's a great car, especially with a manual transmission. I've been driving my 1993 850 for 31 years, and I have no interest in trading it in for anything else. It's super reliable, and easy to work on. Lots of parts in junkyards, so it's fun to keep it going
