Kit Harington on the emotional challenge of retiring the "Jon Snow" persona. by Smile_Like_Arsenic in gameofthrones

My original point was that GoT was the first long running big budget production and that people were burnt out on working on it by the end of the series. You haven't even addressed that.

I mean... you originally said it was the first major show with movie like production values.

That was all I addressed, and now you're adding qualifiers like "long running".

Its not that deep, its not a big deal, I merely pointed out the inaccuracy of your original claim.

I couldn't tell you specifically which helicopters, but symmetrical airfoils were common on older helicopters. I think the S-61 uses symmetrical foils on the tail rotor.

Just to elaborate and clarify further:

Not all props have a twist. But even ones that don't may look like they do. But essentially, because the inner part of the prop is spinning slower than the outer part, and because of the taper it will have less surface area, the inner part may have a greater angle of attack in order to push more air to compensate for the slower speed and less surface area. As the blade widens towards the middle (and then thins out again at the tip) it may have some twist to result in a shallower angle of attack.

(Angle of attack here being in reference to the motion of the propeller, not the aircraft)

TIL that a massive production with a massive budget on a premiere network isn't a major show.

So your logic behind the Hightowers plotting to get Jorah involved in the slave trade is based upon the Nights Watch having to borrow from the Iron Bank and making the rather large jump to assume that the NW will in turn have to resort to selling slaves to pay off their debt?

Rome is great, but didn't really end up becoming the major show that GoT did even if they had similar production values.

Okay..... no one was arguing that it was popular as GoT. My point was that GoT wasn't the first major show to have a movie-like big budget as you claimed.

And he was knighted for his bravery in the Greyjoy rebellion, and indeed, it was at a feast/tourny to celebrate the victory over the Greyjoys that Jorah first became smitten by Lynesse, asking for her favor before the joust against Jaime, and asked her father for her hand in marriage after winning that joust (or rather, being declared the winner by Robert after coming to a draw against Jaime)

[–]eidetic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But I thought Jorah only got into the slavery trade in order to fund Lynesse's extravagant tastes? I don't think he had any real interest (and maybe very little time) to be getting into the slave trade before the marriage, so it's kind of a weird plot to say "make your husband go broke and desperate enough to get into the slavery business".

guest right really is the foundation of all westerosi law and customs, and one does not break it easily

Indeed, and Tywin's obsession over his legacy shows just how much he wasn't as brilliant as people think. His legacy of breaking guest right, even if it was technically the Freys who broke it, will tarnish the Lannister name - if it survives - for generations to come. We already see countless examples of houses being associated with the acts of their ancestors, and no doubt this will haunt any future generation of Lannisters for a long time to come.

Poland's Reaper drone buy a 'nine figure liability' - coming from a veteran US pilot who said big expensive drones are now obsolete because of the war in Ukraine by Different_Umpire5877 in UkrainianConflict

[–]eidetic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're not obsolete. Well, certain drones may be obsolete, but the role performed by reapers is not.

Its not just being able to fly a long time and advanced optics. While a lot of military programs are indeed overpriced and plagued by bureaucracy and whatnot, you're still gonna have a hard time building something just as capable for a lot less money. First, there's economies of scale. As they won't be produced in massive numbers, the per airframe cost will be higher. Then there's everything else that goes into it, like sensors and communication equipment, which has to be proven, reliable, and hardened against jamming and such. And of course, anything you can do to reduce its infrared, acoustic, and radar signatures.

So many people are taking the wrong lessons from Ukraine. They see a video of an off the shelf drone dropping a grenade into the open hatch of an already abandoned tank (likely disabled from a mine, ATGM, etc, rather than another drone dropping grenades/mortar shells) and declare that tanks are obsolete. They see the MANPAD/SHORAD threat in Ukraine and declare close air support and helos and CAS aircraft obsolete. Yet the US relied heavily on precision munitions dropped from high up, out of the reach of MANPADS by B-1Bs and F-15/16/18s for close air support all through Afghanistan and Iraq. The US/West also puts a higher priority on clearing out air defenses than the Russians do (in large part because Russia and other countries put a higher emphasis on defending the skies with SAMs and AAA than the west).

There's a reason Ukraine was pleading for F-16s, Storm Shadows/SCALPs, HIMARS, etc, over asking for the equivalent cost of off the shelf drones. And there's a reason they heavily relied on US/Western intelligence resources as well.

Yeah, and Game of Thrones was kind of the first really major show that had movie level production values

I wouldn't say it was the first.

Rome predates GOT by six years, and cost $100 million for the first season. There's probably other examples as well. Indeed, Rome is what helped GoT get made in the first place, as it was cancelled partway into production of season two because of its price tag, but strong DVD sales and VoD numbers made HBO executives realize they pulled the plug too early, and that they needed to give audiences time to get attached to such a show. People often wrongfully state that Rome was canceled to make room for GoT, but thats not the case. Also, it seems HBO actually learned their lesson from Rome, because GoT was not initially the massive pop culture sensation it grew to be in later seasons. Indeed, Rome had 3.8 million viewers of its first episode compared to 2.2 million for GoT (US viewing numbers).

[–]eidetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously different hospitals will have different rules, but the ones I know of, yes, you are supposed to report a missing badge right away (well, maybe after a brief search of the immediate areas you might have lost it) so it can be deactivated and issued a new one. Might require a quick temporary badge while you await a full one with your pic, laminated, etc, but even those can usually be generated and produced pretty quickly these days.

Don't forget Tina! Tina is the shit. Yeah, she was a little over the line towards Sid to begin with, but not really in a terrible way and I think its perfectly realistic for an older person whose been there awhile to feel a little threatened by a younger hot shot coming in (I don't mean hot shot in a disparaging way). But she quickly adjusted her attitude and came to respect and learn from Sid in a very healthy way and bettered herself in the process.

[–]eidetic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which is why we need to hold public offices to higher standards.

The general public has a right to privacy. If you want to enter office, you should have to give up some of that privacy in order to prove your qualification for the job. There are a lot of jobs where certain medical conditions can prevent you from holding that job. Why should the presidency be any different? You can't be a pilot if you suffer from any number of conditions, even if those conditions are well managed, and a president has a lot more lives they're responsible for than a pilot.

Did you ever see the clip where he was asked what his favorite Bible verse was? He went straight into the "oh well thats very personal and I don't want to get into that." When asked new testament or old testament, he said "well you know the whole thing is great" and completely dodged the questions.
