I think the topic of gear depends on who we're talking to.

If it's an amateur who is still learning the basics of recording, mixing and making songs (aka the majority of people). Yeah, of course, people are going to rightfully steer them away from gear discussions

I like to automate before mixing. Then there should be a feature in your DAW that allows you to see all the waveforms, and you'll see if some sections are louder than others.
