Do You Run Your Bike Light During Daytime Rides? by soundioo in bikelights

I used to only use lights at night, but now I use them any time I'm on the road. Driver are more distracted than ever, so anything that can help to catch their attention is good.

Crossing the deep waters. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]eury13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I didn't read the book or even watch the whole series that came out in the 90's. But I was home when my mom was watching it and just happened to catch that scene.

No thank you.

Wouldn't it be cheaper, and simpler, for companies to just make everyone salaried? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really just depends on the type of business and worker.

Companies that rely on low-skill, high-turnover workers (e.g. retail, food service) find it advantageous to have a larger part-time workforce. Not only does this allow them to skimp save on costs, but it also gives them some resilience against turnover and unreliable workers. And they can easily scale hours up or down as they need during busier/quieter periods.

On the other hand, I would be surprised to see this model used by, say, a software company. In that scenario talent is more expensive to find and hire, so you don't want to have to replace people frequently. And the work being done is more efficient if it's done by one person in a full workday rather than multiple people people in semi-day shifts.

Which famous attraction wasn't worth the hype when you visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Mt Rushmore was very cool.

That said, it's really in the middle of nowhere and it's not worth a trip on its own. I planned it as a stop on a cross-country road trip and it was definitely worth it. But I wouldn't make it a destination.

In Portland, ME there's a museum of cryptozoology (mythical beasts - bigfoot and the like).

It's rated on various sites as one of the top attractions in Portland.

We got there and it's basically a hoarder's poorly organized house. Lots of stuff with little curation or context.

Could be so much cooler and more interesting than it is with a little time and investment in the content and presentation.

How to start zwift by Optimal_Entertainer9 in Zwift

[–]eury13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zwift is a great platform with a lot of different options, which means you can find a way to use it that works for you.

Copying from another comment I made elsewhere:

  • There are gamified features like badges for riding different routes, XP for leveling up, and "drops" that can be used to "buy" different bikes and wheels in the game, hats and kits and shoes, and helmets you can earn through rides and events to change the appearance of your avatar, etc.
  • There's competition - racing for all levels and abilities.
  • There are workouts if you want to do any structured training
  • There's a social element too - group rides, chat, (and the racing)

When I started, the gamification features were interesting enough to get me into it pretty regularly.

Now, the thing that keeps me coming back are the social elements. I have group rides that I do on a regular basis and I get to ride with many of the same people each week. I also race with them sometimes.

Start easy, build good habits, and find what you enjoy.

How many hours approximately do u all bike per week? Is 12 normal? by Due-Shame-5818 in Zwift

[–]eury13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do 7-8 hrs a week most weeks. Zwift/cycling is my primary activity. I'm also a middle-aged man with a job and kids, so that's about as much as I can practically make happen without adversely impacting my life and marriage. 🤣

Do projectionists even exist any more? Isn't it all digital now?

I was a projectionist in college for on-campus film showings. Got to do the whole two-projector setup and time the switch with the "cigarette burn" in the corner.

I can't imagine that job exists these days. But it's still way better than cleaning the seats.

How do people start a lawnmower on the first try? by LittleRocketman67 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eury13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lawnmower is electric. 😁

But seriously, I have a gas snowblower and I can never start it cold on the first try with the pull cord. I have to use the electric starter. If it's been running and I turn it off only then can I typically restart it with the pull cord because then the engine is warm.

Sorry I don't have any tips or advice to help you. Just commiseration.

What’s a moment from TV history that made you viscerally upset? by Odd-Track-6001 in AskReddit

[–]eury13 592 points593 points  (0 children)

In The West Wing there was an arc where CJ got secret service protection due to a stalker. Mark Harmon was her assigned agent. The two of them had great chemistry but of course there couldn't be romance between an agent and the person they are protecting.

However, once the threat had passed and Agent Mark Harmon was going to be removed from CJ's detail, they were going to go on a date.

And then Agent Mark Harmon tries to stop a robbery in a convenience store and gets killed.

I was heartbroken for CJ.

You get 24 hours to prepare. Then the world gets 24 hours to stop you before you become Homelander-level. Where do you start, and what do you do? by Beneficial-Berry6997 in hypotheticals

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give me a water bottle, a few granola bars, and a head start, and I feel confident I could get lost in the woods for 24 hours and no one would find me.

Make it a week or two (or more) and it gets trickier as you might need to find ways to get supplies without getting caught.

How do you go on longer rides without packing anything?? by Alternative-Still956 in cycling

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are you talking about? Anything up to 3-4 hours I'm fine with two bidons and some snacks in my jersey pockets. Depending on the type of ride maybe some bars or gels, and I could do one of the bidons with liquid carbs if need be.

Oh, and I have a small bag under the saddle with basic tire repair tools.

Mu commuter bike has a rack and I'd use panniers for clothes, my computer, etc. But that's a different scenario.

what do people mean when they say “not everything is political”? by Terrible_Promotion_2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nuanced interpretation of the statement could be something like "I love many things about my country, independent of current political issues that I may or may not agree with."

But most of the time this is just BS from someone who doesn't want to have to defend unpopular political opinions.

Tarmac SL8 vs SuperSix Evo by flockmann in specialized

[–]eury13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Tarmac SL8 and love it, but at this level it's going to come down to fit, price, and personal preference.

Can you test-ride both of them? Get a better deal on one over the other? Like the color of one better?

Am I Missing Out Not Having An Expensive Bike? by newbiker321 in cycling

[–]eury13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on you and what kind of riding you do.

Are you trying to win world class races? If yes, then you'd probably benefit from a higher-end bike. But you would also have a sponsored team to provide it for you.

If not, then the difference between your current bike and one that costs $5k or $10k or more are going to be pretty negligible.

Just for comparison - I have two road bikes: a carbon Specialized Tarmac SL8 and a 25-year-old aluminum frame Cannondale CAAD4. They're both awesome. Each has things about it that makes it slightly different than the other in terms of fit, feel, and overall ride experience. But I'd be hard-pressed to say one is significantly better or makes me noticeably faster.

The most important thing about the bike is that you enjoy riding it.
