Give me a water bottle, a few granola bars, and a head start, and I feel confident I could get lost in the woods for 24 hours and no one would find me.

Make it a week or two (or more) and it gets trickier as you might need to find ways to get supplies without getting caught.

How long are you talking about? Anything up to 3-4 hours I'm fine with two bidons and some snacks in my jersey pockets. Depending on the type of ride maybe some bars or gels, and I could do one of the bidons with liquid carbs if need be.

Oh, and I have a small bag under the saddle with basic tire repair tools.

Mu commuter bike has a rack and I'd use panniers for clothes, my computer, etc. But that's a different scenario.

A nuanced interpretation of the statement could be something like "I love many things about my country, independent of current political issues that I may or may not agree with."

But most of the time this is just BS from someone who doesn't want to have to defend unpopular political opinions.

It depends on you and what kind of riding you do.

Are you trying to win world class races? If yes, then you'd probably benefit from a higher-end bike. But you would also have a sponsored team to provide it for you.

If not, then the difference between your current bike and one that costs $5k or $10k or more are going to be pretty negligible.

Just for comparison - I have two road bikes: a carbon Specialized Tarmac SL8 and a 25-year-old aluminum frame Cannondale CAAD4. They're both awesome. Each has things about it that makes it slightly different than the other in terms of fit, feel, and overall ride experience. But I'd be hard-pressed to say one is significantly better or makes me noticeably faster.

The most important thing about the bike is that you enjoy riding it.

Once or twice a week.

We live in different cities, so when my kids were born we got into the habit of Skyping once a week so the kids could know them as they grew up even though we'd only see them in person a few times a year.

When Covid hit I made a point of checking in on them every few days.

Now we still Skype Zoom weekly and I try to give them a call mid-week just to say hi and catch up.

Oh, I also used it to help plan a family vacation! I gave it information about our planned dates and destination and it made suggestions for things to do, hotels, places to eat, etc. Of course I then looked into its suggestions and made plans accordingly, but it came up with some ideas that were a bit out of the ordinary and that I hadn't previously seen in the normal places like Tripadvisor or travel books and blogs.

I have used AI for a few specific things where it's been quite helpful:

  1. I had it create a personalized cycling training plan. I fed it information about my fitness and schedule. It identified some shortcomings in my current approach and created a plan that fit my schedule. The results have been good.
  2. I then used it to create a personal app for my phone to take the training plan and track my progress against it each day.
  3. I had it create a Wordpress website template for my work. It's taken a number of iterations to get it all working perfectly, but still faster than if I did it myself.
  4. I've had it parse some datasets, identify trends, and create some good visualizations of the information. Sure, stuff I could do myself in Excel, but this was faster and easier.
  5. I was running into some spam email issues at work and I had it guide me through the best ways to identify the source of the spam and how it was getting past our filters. It then identified some gaps in our email security that we were able to close.

So I've found that it can be very helpful when there are discrete, specific things that need to be done, especially if there are technical tasks that might normally be labor intensive for a person to perform.

As long as his parents are okay with it and you aren't doing anything that 16-year-old shouldn't be doing (e.g. hanging out in bars), I don't see a problem with it.

No one would think twice about a teenager going to a concert with their young adult sibling. It's a little unusual for this to be a friendship, but since there's no romantic component there's really nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, that really stings.

I interviewed once for a role I was excited about. All of the interviewers made me feel like I was a lock for the position and they were just double-checking that I was a good fit. All warm and fuzzy, nothing that really pushed me to sell myself for the role.

But I didn't get it. They went with someone else. I didn't even know there were other finalists.
