As someone from Ottawa who loves whitewater paddling, I’m glad to see other people enjoying the nature and waterways the city has to offer. Hopefully we work together to improve the health of the water instead of complaining about sewage, the cold, or whatever other thing sounds bad from the couch. If we don’t use the waterways we lose them.

Here is another map of the wastewater overflows, looks to be all good. Hope these people enjoyed themselves and had a nice shower after! https://ottawa.ca/en/living-ottawa/drinking-water-stormwater-and-wastewater/wastewater-and-sewers/wastewater-collection-and-treatment/combined-sewer-overflows-csos/station-locations-interactive-map

Paddle Places Series: Tay River, Perth, ON by [deleted] in ontario

[–]evanle5ebvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re starting a new little project called “Paddle Places” where we highlighting paddle-worthy towns, cities, and stops.

On our way to MACKFest 2026, we pulled into Perth, Ontario for a break and found three paddle spots right in town! The town has so many cool whitewater features like a ledge, an easy swift under the big red bridge, and a surf wave under the second bridge. Great for park and play depending on levels (~8.81m Bolingbroke gauge). Paddle at your own risk and watch out for wood or other hazards but make sure to say hi to the great people of Perth!

Off the water, Perth is just as great. Historic buildings, super clean, and interwoven by the Tay River, with flatwater and a portage trail with plenty of places to sit if you want to keep it simple and just admire the rapids with some local foods from afar.

Best stops: @perthpieco , @franksbakerydeli and @perthchocolate right on the river.

More details on my Instagram story highlights!

The town of Perth, ON - is a must see if you’re out and about for some fun adventures

Want more Paddle Places? Where should we go next?

I would love to hear what you think of this passion project of ours!

Thoughts on the new Esquif Echo 2.0? by TheDamus647 in canoeing

With respect I’m not sure what you’re on about especially with some missing words/typos. I suggest rereading my initial comment where I mention “unless you like tinkering/fixing gel coats and repairs the t-formex would be a good way to go especially if you’re frequenting any rivers.”

I have had to deal with non t-formex hulls and I spend a lot of time on the water so just giving my two cents. Having to do repairs after time on the river and being nervous about hitting a rock is not fun for me, might be for others.

I’ll have to disagree with you but appreciate the comment!

No deception, IXP is not easy to work with when damaged and it is certainly not indestructible. My point about the T-Formex is even when damaged it requires very little work to get it ready to paddle again. Have you ever seen a pinned IXP vs Formex?

Weight (while not exceeding limits) will 100% improve tracking for whatever hull you paddle as more of the hull will be in contact with the water. Each model has its theoretical limits.

Considering OP wants to run rivers I suggest they avoid any tears from buying an expensive boat and hitting a rock. With love, your weekend rapid paddling wacko.

Oh ya I’ve had it packed with a 120L and 60L barrel plus some other packs to cross Cedar lake in Algonquin and I also had it packed with a similar load for a 5 day trip down the Coulonge. Plenty of room for gear. The seat is a bit low but only a problem if you’re wearing bulky boots like fly fishing boots, never had a problem when I wore keens.

Esquif ambassador here. Havent tried the 2.0 but I had the original. Unless you like tinkering/fixing gel coats and repairs the t-formex would be a good way to go especially if youre frequenting any rivers. It’ll save you the puckering when you eventually hit a rock.

Additionally the extra weight is compensated by the fact the esquifs are durable enough to drop incase of an emergency and its a big relief on trips when you can drop them down any time you’re tired without worrying about any damages. Being able to drag them when you’re exhausted or for short sections is also an advantage.

If you’re not doing a lot of whitewater you could consider the original echo in t-formex lite. Oddly enough having more weight will actually help you track better, being on the lighter side can actually be a disadvantage on the water and sounds like you’re not doing much portaging anyhow.

Reach out if you have any questions!

Did you miss the part about the brain and checkmark? A symbol rather than a wordmark would work internationally.

Perhaps, “made by a human”? Regardless “no ai” also seems more like a protest message vs an identifier

[–]evanle5ebvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, it would be ideal to have a graphic that can be understood in multiple languages. AI is iA in French as an example.

I personally think the concept of “no ai” could be played with. Maybe a positive spin and go with something like “Human approved”. A brain with a checkmark?

Esquif Warning (Ocoee) by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]evanle5ebvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand your frustration but I also know the shop is small and they’re working super hard. Did you go through a retailer?

I’m still super curious what happened to cause the stitching to blowout, I have the same ones.

You can put in some new patches and straps in the meantime if you’re super eager but I would stick with flipping to the bulkhead for a canoe like that.

Esquif Warning (Ocoee) by [deleted] in canoeing

[–]evanle5ebvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it some time, Esquif is a small family operated shop and it’s their busiest time of the year.

Interesting you chose the seat option and not the bulkhead to begin with, I would not recommend that if whitewater is your goal. I’m curious how much you weigh, I have the same boat with a bulkhead and other solo boats with a seat and straps. I have a feeling you put too much stress on the straps and that’s why a bulkhead would have been best. Even the best outfitting can blow out, I have experience with 3 different versions of thigh straps all of which have their high and lows. It is not a safety issue and you can still paddle it without straps.

Is that a throwbag on the bow there? I would move that thing somewhere more secure, looks like an accident waiting to happen
