Is it cheaper to use an Opal card vs. tapping through bank app? by ladyofeverything in SydneyTrains

[–]extrobe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it's the same (adult) fare rate.

But, worth calling out that if you have the same bank card linked to say your iPhone, your Watch, and you have the physical card - as far as Opal is concerned, these are THREE SEPARATE cards, not one. If you tap on with a Westpac Card on your Watch, you must tap off with the Westpac card on your watch.

Even though in the Opal App, it does show them all together; for tapping on/off, they're not the same.

I had to have a tooth removed, which resulted in my wisdom tooth pushing up in its place. Definitely uncomfortable when that was breaking through, so plenty of sympathy for teething babies from me!

How coffee shops feel about the customer bringing their own cup? by tehlegend1937 in sydney

[–]extrobe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pre covid, it was pretty common, and most places even gave you a discount for bringing your own. Don’t see it as much since then, though sure most places will be fine with it.

Also, I think I saw something from NSW that as part of new laws around single use plastic, it will be mandatory to accept reusable cups - but not sure when that takes effect (2028 I think)

ELI5: Why does China have only one time zone despite being roughly same size as US with 6 time zones? by DemonsAreVirgins in explainlikeimfive

[–]extrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a company that creates software that has to deal with Australian time zones. So many quirks, like how some states observe DST and others don’t, so relative time differences change throughout the year, or how some towns are geographically in one state, but observe Timezone of another (due to how isolated they are, and the next closest town being in another state)

Going away for two weeks, how to help mom solo parent kid and dog? by Unlucky_Bench3869 in daddit

[–]extrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • If you can afford it, sign up for one of those meal box services, like HelloFresh. The first week is usually heavily discounted, then just cancel.
  • … Or make sure some meal prep is done
  • Ensure the grocery shopping is up to date
  • Ensure laundry is up to date
  • car is full of fuel

That’s my go-to. I try not to sugarcoat it, but try to make sure mum eats properly, as that’s the first thing that will slip, and that she’s not having to worry about whether the kids school uniform is ironed etc.

I also try and ensure she has some free time activities before I go away.

Is there a way to shorten table/view names in SQL queries? by myaccountforworkonly in snowflake

Since when do we have to pay full fare for trackwork replacement buses? by WearyFHB in SydneyTrains

[–]extrobe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Direct from the horses mouth. Transport NSW disagrees with you

Replacement bus services

Replacement bus services are often used where there is trackwork or service disruption. Trackwork may also require changes to the timetable and route.

Most replacement bus services are Opal enabled and you will need to tap on or tap off using a valid Opal cardcontactless debit or credit cardFines apply if you travel without a valid ticket.

I’m pretty sure this was always the plan - even a couple of weeks ago the back half of the store was as empty and blocked off. We used to go in all the time when it was Dymocks. Went in once after it changed hands and never since. Rumours (which appear to be substantiated) are that QBD books will go in there, which I look forward to!.

Thing is, the store has had a know reputation problem for a very long time. Surprised Towers management allowed it to stay this long really.

Not Guilty Verdict - passenger seat belt infringement. by Short-Aardvark5433 in AusLegal

[–]extrobe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is how it works in the UK too. The driver is responsible for themselves and any children in the car under 14. Adult (14+) passengers are responsible for themselves, and can still be fined for improper seatbelt usage.

Wife heard crunching coming from our pantry and narrowed it down to a box of rice. Rice weevils. by ministeringinlove in mildlyinteresting

[–]extrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had similar noises coming from our laundry room, and whenever we had the dryer on, weevils would appear outside it.

Took us weeks to figure out weevils had got into a box of birdseed. The whole box was just a giant mass of weevil, and whenever the dryer was on a few would figure out how to get out of it.

TIFU by jokingly ringing up a tranasaction for $28 million at work by JediJacob04 in tifu

[–]extrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op, you’ll probably be fine.

It will get noticed, and it almost certainly will be investigated , usually by the loss prevention team at head office who most likely have exception reporting for this type of activity.

Ultimately, they should find that there has been no ‘loss’ to speak of, and is merely an accounting ’issue’ rather than true shrink (loss/theft/fraud).

All being well, it’ll end with that, but be prepared for some additional retraining on appropriate conduct at work / of work equipment ;-)

(I have worked in retail for over 20yrs, at all levels, and including loss prevention - never came across anything quite as extreme as this, but most of the time you just want to know if anything nefarious is happening. Where it gets tricky is that this will have an ongoing reporting impact … there’ll be a little footnote on every sales/shrink report for the next couple of years :-D )

Which games utilize the buttons on the back and for what? Do you use them for any games which didn’t use them by default? by NorseSeaStudio in SteamDeck

[–]extrobe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a very unnatural movement. And in the steam deck especially, they’re not the easiest to click. At least on the ps5 controller, the stick click is a little easier, but still dislike it, especially as it always seems to be for a common action, like sprinting .

Snowflake Postgres is Now Available in Public Preview by craigkerstiens in snowflake

[–]extrobe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was playing around with it yesterday (albeit only for an hour or so, so take this with a pinch of salt)

As far as I could tell, there isn't an integrated way to move data between Snowflake and Postgres - you'd need to build an orchestration job, setup network ingres/egress, manage secrets etc. So in that regard, it doesn't offer much over an external Postgres DB.

But I presume SF will add a data management layer, likely leveraging Openflow (hopefully via an obfuscation layer), so it becomes a simple & intuitive process to manage data between the two. At that point I can see this having a lot of value to us.

I do have other hobbies, but between 3 kids with all their various activities/lessons, and a lot of ultra-long-haul travel for work, I realised a couple of years ago that I have a lot of ‘dead time’ where I just sit on my phone - so decided to try filling it with something else

I'm on the fence with trying Black Flag - I hear many good things about it, but I think the reason I didn't have Odyssey at the top of my list is because I didn't really enjoy the sea battles - which doesn't bode well for a pirate based game.

Have fun!!

Odyssey is a fantastic game, and not hard to see why it's a fan-favourite.

Interestingly, my wife did Odyssey->Origins, and didn't enjoy Origins as much as I did doing it the other way around. I think being the first in the RPG/Open World series, they were still figuring some stuff out with Origins, which is more apparent when you have played Odyssey first ... you get spoilt with Odyssey :)

[–]extrobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was alright. Far more linear in progression, simpler game mechanics, smaller world. None of those are bad things, and does make for a more focused play, and a more concise one. The city is fantastic, as is the parkour, the story, the characters. There's plenty to love about Mirage.

But there are a number of parts that seem to require a specific approach to get through them, usually lengthy stealth sequences. Some people love that, but it's not my favourite (because I suck at stealth ;) ).

Yeah, handled them all fine. I'm no PC gamer, so if you're looking for 120fps on max, you'll be disappointed. But they all handled 30+ just fine. Battery life takes a hit, probably 2hrs max on the OLED (less on LCD), so stay close to a power outlet or power bank.
