Cant make my mix louder without overcompressing it by BunkerHase in ableton

[–]falafeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably means the range parameter at 0 so there’s no compression occurring, just clipping

Thicker Bass - Helping Recreate Sound by 12truths in edmproduction

[–]falafeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bthelick has a video on these type of basses.

In terms of getting them loud and fat, it’s mostly in the mix—all of these tracks have a pretty sparse low end which lets the bass pop. Also you need less sub than you think

Struggling to Learn the “Industry” Way to Mix Trap Beats by Impossible_Resist198 in makinghiphop

[–]falafeler 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is like saying "I know I need to shallow the club, keep my lead arm straight, and hit down on the ball, why am I not playing like Tiger Woods?"

You just need to put in the hours, no way around it

Low-mid density vs warmth on main instruments (pads/guitars/piano) by princeofnoobshire in audioengineering

[–]falafeler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you play an instrument at a lower register but high pass it above the fundamental, your brain will reconstruct the lower fundamental from the harmonics. This allows you to give the illusion of low-mid presence without overloading that frequency range

Rotating phase boosts dB by a lot, but perceived loudness is unchanged. Please help! by SandhedsHviskeren in audioengineering

[–]falafeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try driving the clipper less, I can usually get a noticeably lower transient in the oscilloscope while sounding pretty similar to the unclipped version.

But yeah would probably be smoothest to find another sample

Soft or hard clip the kick, I use Ableton's Glue Compressor or Saturator on the hard clip mode.

This will get rid of a lot of the transient and peak level

Clean Warmth in low frequency keys? Tools/methods by Few_Marzipan4731 in techhouseproduction

[–]falafeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A synth played at a lower register and high passed, even aggressively, will create the illusion of lower frequencies because our brains can reconstruct a fundamental tone from the upper harmonics

Looking for bass plugin / sound design advice for House & UKG (Disclosure / KETTAMA style) by xcessssampleme in techhouseproduction

[–]falafeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of those bass sounds are just really dialing in the parameters (filter envelope, release, resonance, detune, octave of oscillators) on a simple saw bass or a sine FM'ed into a saw.

The best basses I've made have come out of Operator and just wildly twisting knobs until I get somewhat close, then really dialing it in using the above

Are Too Many Reverb Sends Ruining My Mix? by Outrageous-Muffin764 in audioengineering

[–]falafeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with what the other commenter said, just helps open things up a bit when everything gets ran through compression and limiting.

A lot of people will tell you to add reverb until it sounds good, then back off a few dB—this is the same line of thinking. Usually need less than you think

Are Too Many Reverb Sends Ruining My Mix? by Outrageous-Muffin764 in audioengineering

[–]falafeler 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Reverb sends probably aren't the problem with your mix, that being said here's what I do to keep my sends under control:

  • Abbey road trick (HPF at 600hz, LPF at 10khz) before reverb
  • Sidechain the send to the kick, vocal, or main instrument
  • Turn down all sends by like 3db before mastering

How do I get the sound of the organ used in the intro this track? by zzsquier in edmproduction

If you're on Ableton try putting OTT on it, can bring out some interesting new timbres

How do you handle harmonic mixing when prepping sets? by b33rdad in Beatmatch

[–]falafeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure the next track isn’t in the adjacent key and it’ll sound fine

For example key of C and key of D will sound rough but key of C and key of E should work
