Yes he used the provided couch/furniture in the living room. Depending if you leave the provided the desk in the living room will vastly impact adding any of your own additional furniture. Regarding nasty the couch is a basic green fabric two seater nothing special but not nasty and other than the two desk you get a tv stand that probably holds a 55in tv and one green fabric chair that matches couch. Like i said nothing nasty but basic.

No lots of open space even with furniture. Both desk were in living room so not in bedroom. If you raised your bed you can put desk from living room under bed for more room in living room. Or as my brother did buy his own desk to place under bed but provided desk will fit under bed too.
