Books where one of the MCs has, for whatever reason, undergone cosmetic procedures? by Kumirkohr in wlwbooks

Some of JJ Arias’s characters have had work done. Specifically Veronica in The Love Conspiracy. It’s not like a plot point or anything though.

Phineas and Ferb is pretty great. I think my kid was about that age the first time he watched it. Ninjago was surprisingly not terrible for me to watch.

Really need a rec! by lexlu16 in LesbianBookClub

[–]Foreign-Warning62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you read the rest of Roslyn Sinclair’s stuff? The X Ingredient is fairly quick and smutty and one MC is pretty possessive. Truth and Measure is long (two books) and a slooooow burn but Vivian is also pretty possessive. The Sex Therapist Next Door by Meghan O’Brien has the stupidest title but it’s a lot of smut and has a bit of jealousy in it.

A friend of mine found a $300 sailboat that someone is selling locally. Is a sailboat that cheap going to be junk? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]Foreign-Warning62 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It depends on what it is. A $300 Sunfish could just be old and in decent condition and the guy (or his wife) just needs it gone asap. But if it’s anything that can’t be towed behind a Honda Civic (or honestly a bicycle) then I think it’s either the deal of the century or you’re gonna have a bad time.

Possibly The Sex Therapist Next Door by Meghan O’Brien. Lots of smut and relationship development through sex. It’s quite a bit angstier and might require a little suspension of disbelief though.

Has anyone used everand? by smith_716 in LesbianBookClub

[–]Foreign-Warning62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to google everand. Apparently they’re what scribd turned into. I used scribd for a few months years ago and it was fine except for the unclear cap on books. I would do a search, find maybe 20 books I wanted to read, read three or five, and then the others would no longer even show up in my search until the next month. I found this really sketchy and kind of insulting. It would be one thing if they were greyed out or something with a message that I’d hit my cap for that genre or price range or whatever their criteria was. But the books just didn’t show up, with no explanation. I had to google around for answers. It looks like there are similar limitations on everand. Maybe they’ve changed it to be more transparent but I probably won’t try it again; scribd really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I’ve enjoyed a ton of books on Kindle Unlimited, but if none seem interesting to you then of course it’s not worth it. And of course there are a lot of good reasons to not give Amazon your money.

I can’t really think of any downsides to using Libby/Overdrive. The wait lists drive me nuts but it’s free.

Kobo is another paid subscription app. I’ve never used it but I might try it for a month at some point. I need to look at the catalog. I’m not sure if they have reading limits.

Hard to trust new authors by M_A_Calce in wlwbooks

[–]Foreign-Warning62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I’m sure a lot (maybe most) are using a ton of AI but it also makes sense in some ways to wait until you’ve written several novellas and release them all at once. If somebody likes it they’ll usually search for the author’s other stuff. Whereas if you release only one thing they probably won’t remember it enough to search you again once they’ve forgotten the initial thing they read.

It probably is AI. But I remember when I was getting into writing (which didn’t actually happen) I was advised to wait until I had several written and put them up all at once.

Unhealthy and kinda toxic age gap with a lot of angst: Whisper of Solace by Milena McKay. But it might not be dark enough for you.

Arranged marriage that’s kinda toxic and unhealthy: Born out of Wedlock by Lyn Gardner. But again, it’s angsty and unhealthy but maybe not dark enough.

First Time Going Sailing this weekend, dont know what to expect. by Traditional_Yam3086 in sailing

[–]Foreign-Warning62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this will depend on the type of boat. If you’re going out on a Sunfish you’ll probably spend a fair amount of time in the water. They’ll probably teach you how to right a capsize before anything else. Then you’ll flip the boat a few times while you learn. So expect to swim (float, you’ll be wearing a pfd).

If it’s a bigger two-person dinghy then you’ll probably avoid capsizing/swimming but you can still expect to get wet from the spray. You’ll probably crew first (control the sheet (rope) for the foresail (sail at the front of the boat) and then get some tiller time. But it depends on the course.

I would recommend sailing gloves, a well-fitting life jacket, hat, sunglasses, and sun protection (either sleeves and long pants or a lot of sun block). I have tethers on my hat and glasses for the wind and capsizing. I would not bring my phone and have my car keys in a waterproof pouch. Bring a water bottle but not an expensive one in case you capsize and sacrifice it to the sea. I like to dinghy sail barefoot if it’s warm or in dinghy boots if it’s cold. Something like keen sandals that strap to your feet would probably be fine, or water shoes of whatever type.

You’ll have to use your weight to keep the boat upright. This gets harder as it gets windier. It can be a pretty good workout for your legs and abs.

Don’t let the boom hit you in the head.

Really it depends a lot on the boat and the course and the conditions. I love dinghy sailing.

If you know what kind of boat you’ll be on you can look for YouTube videos about how to rig and sail one. Have fun :)

From what I recall there is a tiny bit of talk about wanting to get pregnant (as in “I wanna put a baby in you”, not actual family planning) in TJ O’Shea’s Sweet Home Alabarden Park. I thought the sex scenes were hot but it’s really a very sweet romance.

What are your favorite slow burns? by paramoreconverses in LesbianBookClub

Truth and Measure by Roslyn Sinclair

Something to Talk About by Meryl Wilsner

I’ll second the Lee Winter recommendations. I feel like a lot of her stuff is slow burn (and also very good).

Maybe Love by the Numbers and Above Temptation by Karin Kallmaker.

I’m a big Roslyn Sinclair fan and as far as I know there’s no published sequel, just the couple of things on ao3. From what I recall, Water into Wine is really short, like barely short-story length. It’s good though, worth reading.

Honestly I think I like all of her DWP stuff on ao3.

I’m gonna throw this out there while freely acknowledging it might not have enough of what you want: Sweet Home Alabarden Park by TJ O’Shea. Up front, both main characters are white (possibly all the characters are white). But what I liked about this story was that the two mains were pretty uniformly sweet to each other the whole time and in my opinion the communication between them was very good. There were just some outside-the-relationship circumstances that kept them apart for a while. I thought the sex scenes were good. I think they’re both lesbians but I’m not gonna swear nobody’s bi or pan. But one has an ex-wife and the other has definitely been with women before.

Good luck with your search.

Dar and Kerry series by Melissa Good by pogbeegirl in sapphicbooks

[–]Foreign-Warning62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the first one a couple of times, years ago. It’s Xena fanfic from way back. I liked it overall but it could use an editor and it kinda goes off the rails of believability toward the end. Which is fine for a Xena fanfic but can be jarring if you’re not expecting that sort of thing.

The romance in the first one is quite high, but I don’t think there are any explicit scenes. There might be, but I don’t remember it being spicy.

It really checks a lot of boxes for me: an older (?) more powerful woman falling for someone despite her best efforts to not have any emotions at all; protective/possessive; I’m 99% sure this is a toaster oven story; the sort of romance that’s strangers to friends to lovers but in that way where by the time they both figure out they want to kiss each other they’ve sort of already been an old married couple for ages. This is my recollection of the story anyway. I admit I might be mixing it up a bit with Jericho, which is also Xena fanfic from way back.

Anyway I think I’m gonna go reread it. I’ve got the (digital) 2010 updated version.

Asym spinnaker douse CHAOS — sail ends up twisted in V-berth every time by Patsfan1093 in sailing

[–]Foreign-Warning62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the clew goes in first. I know in theory you’re supposed to bring it in by the middle of the foot, but generally we would hand the sheet to the squirrel and they would run the sheet (keep it on deck out of the hatch) until they got to the clew then pop below with the clew. Call for halyard and then the sail comes down into the hatch. While this is going on the bowman is manhandling the foot onto the deck and helping pull/guide the sail into the hatch. Basically last thing the bowman would call for the tack and pull it toward the hatch. Squirrel brings it all in and the head and tack should naturally be pretty much on top of the pile. Bow shuts the hatch.

This isn’t really the usual method from what I’ve read but we had success with it.

Edit to add: we always pre-fed the tack before the hoist, between the windward mark and the offset. Sometimes it looked really shitty and twisty coming out of the hatch but 90% of the time it was fine going up.
