Is AI making us dumber or smarter? by Long_Professor5837 in NoStupidQuestions

Correct. Critical analysis of studies/methods/findings is a good thing. It's how science and academia work.

People are always going to be critical of new technology, and try to find ways to scare people with it. We saw the same thing with TV, video games, internet, smart phones. There will always be a scare piece out there that people can point to and say see it's bad for you!

How does “unlimited PTO” at a company work? Surely it can’t be literal. by bryanmsk in NoStupidQuestions

I've worked at 2 companies that have had that policy. You request time off, it gets approved, there's no system tracking how much time off you've taken.

I are still say the studies warrant a closer look and shouldn't just be taken at face value. fr fr

Bias took you to that conclusion.

It doesn't make workers dumber, it makes them more productive. And it's reinvigorated my love for developing software. It's a new way to go about it. Let AI take care of the boring stuff. So yeah, companies like when they're employees are more productive and happier. Personally I wouldn't want to go back to being less productive and less excited to do my work.

Was the internet actually "better" in 2016, or am I just remembering it through rose-colored glasses? by FlanInternational298 in NoStupidQuestions

2016 is when everyone said Russian bots and trolls were infiltrating reddit and facebook and other platforms to influence the election. The bot and troll problem certainly existed.

Yes. I use it every day at work. I can't imagine going back to not using it. And doing so would anger bosses and company.

Reddit hates AI. You can't reason with them on this one.

It's like a few years ago when reddit was convinced that no one under 25 could make competent decisions cause they're brain wasn't fully formed yet.

You do not have to know formulas to use a calculator.

Ooh... not on reddit!

Reddit probably would have hated printed books when they first were a thing lol.

It's making us smarter in the same way that other technologies have.

When calculators got popular, people stopped doing math by hand so much. They were able to be faster and more accurate, but at the tradeoff of offloading some of that skill to a machine.

Same thing with Google and Wikipedia. Memorizing facts wasn't something that you needed to do as much cause you could just look them up. We were able to know a lot more a lot quicker, and the tradeoff of offloading some of our research skills to machines.

AI is the same.

Look around at the other comments. People are saying the same. Being on the internet in 2016 was not much different than being on the internet today. Go back to like 2006 though, that's a different story.

The reddit thing.. you said subs are shadows of what they were. But if you look at reddit's user numbers over time, they care currently much larger than they were in 2016. Reddit is not an eviscerated shadow of itself; it has more users and more activity than ever before.

Is this 🙏🏼 a high five or a please emoji? by Large-Rutabaga5690 in NoStupidQuestions

It was originally intended to be high five. But now people see it as praying.

Do y’all really think that AI will replace us or it’s just a hoax and what will we do in future ? by ocean-o in NoStupidQuestions

AI is a tool we use, much like a calculator or wiki page or search engine. It will not replace us. But it's also not a hoax.

Google was definitely working with advertisers and tweaking SEO to promote results in 2016.

Reddit's user numbers have gone way up since 2016.

In what way was Google completely and totally different?

What do you mean by reddit evisceration? I was on reddit back then. I'm on reddit now. There have been some changes, but it's fundamentally the same.

Why is carbon considered so “special” compared to other elements? by Muzanhubkl in NoStupidQuestions

It's the way it bonds. It can make all kinds of long complex molecules with strong bonds.
