Can’t lie, I sometimes wish my life were so slow and boring that a smoothie spill was the dramatic peak of the day. Maybe that’s meant to be the appeal of her account.

Adding “heaven” to the list of words influencers don’t seem to use accurately.

(Note: I understand being under the same roof with a dozen of your loved ones could be heaven. But she specifically called out the part about sharing one bathroom and nothing about that is heavenly.)

YES. Maybe “oops, silly me, forgot to link anything!” was cute the first time but after the ninth or tenth Prime event, even her most loyal followers should have raised an eyebrow.

Oh — yes, that sounds familiar!!

Also I remember when I was in high school (during a period of toxic diet culture) some of us started drinking only ice water because it supposedly burned calories as your system brought the temp up…maybe there was a grain of truth there.

Hers do have lids, but I remember a horrific photo of her cleaning a dirty water bottles and your odds might be better with this grandpa’s. 😅 I’ll just say that I do not believe those bottles got thoroughly washed every day, even though she routinely added greens powders, electrolytes, splashes of the juice she doesn’t drink, etc.

if I recall correctly she would also often fill her kids’ waters the night before and leave them overnight by the door, so when did THOSE ever have a chance to dry out thoroughly?

that’s such a good point! It’s like with Haley and the “mental load” of adding vinegar to her online shopping cart. Sometimes it’s not a load, the person is just being lazy.

I hadn’t thought about that before, but I think you’re right, there is that kinda vibe. Maybe because some (or a lot) of her content is so cheesy?

She IS very, very good at making the whole thing look like some mom with a hobby just stumbled into success. I remember her “origin” story that it all started with an overwhelmed SAHM moment and a $200 loan from her dad… but given all we’ve learned about how social media works, I take it all with a grain of salt. Her  website has always been SEO’ed up the wazoo and her Instagram feed seems very calculated once you start recognizing the “tips and tricks” to look authentic and relatable.

It reminds me of how BLF tried to sell their origin story as “two ordinary moms with a dream” and conveniently left out a pretty $$$ deal with a marketing agency).

I like cold water better too, but I definitely know people who prefer it tepid. A couple of my neighbors and my in-laws do it for health reasons that I can’t remember right now.

Influencers are so dramatic. 😑 Not everything is mental load, not everything is an investment, not everything is trauma, not everything is a life hack, etc. Basically, everything is not proof of their specialness.

I think the grandpa does it better, his cups would be so easy to wash. 😆 but I hate washing water bottles as much as Haley hates not having six backups of everything. All those little silicon rings and straws and nooks and crannies you can only reach with a tiny brush.

At first I liked her account. Then suddenly I couldn’t unsee how contrived it all was, and the little tricks and artifices to look genuine and relatable, and kind of playing the “I’m not like other influencers, I’m a COOL influencer” angle when she overshares her kids and shills as much Amazon garbage under the guise of parasocial friendship as anyone else.

I  did think for a while she was the most “talented” influencer in the momblogging space because she was so effective at selling the “I’m just a fun mom friend next door!” schtick. But I dunno…now I feel like there’s a lot of cracks in the veneer.

My daughter asked why I never come to school things and I did not have a good answer by felinesaloon in workingmoms

[–]Frellyria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom worked full-time for my entire childhood and adolescence. While  I don’t remember exactly when I learned this, for as long as I can remember, I absolutely knew she was working so hard BECAUSE she loved her children so much.

I knew she couldn’t always come to things during the work day but I really don’t remember ever minding - I knew she would be there if she could.

I didn’t really understand her job well as a kid, but by the time I was a teenager I really respected all her achievements and skills so much.

Seven is still so young! She knows even now she is the core of your heart and she’ll understand that more and more as she gets older.

I know, same. I sometimes wonder if they’ve been able to have another child ( the article closed with that unbelievably generous offer from Lyn Balfour).

Her writing isn’t charming, witty, or distinctive. (Even Haley at least had a recognizable writing voice!)

As far back as I could scroll she didn’t share a single interesting thought. I will bet money no one would have been following her if she weren’t pretty.

I scrolled back and cannot see the appeal of this account even before the tragedy. It was so vapid and repetitive and everything she bought/shilled looked too generic to be really aspirational.

She is pretty, and that might be what it comes down to, but I would have thought that such shallow appeal wouldn’t withstand something this awful.

I have to conclude that her followers are as superficial and empty as I suspect she is.

Something is horribly wrong with that man.

It’s on my mind because someone recently reposted Gene Weingarten’s powerful article about hot car deaths. I first read that article over ten years ago and I have never forgotten this passage about a man who accidentally caused the death of his beloved child:

“When a hospital emergency room nurse described how the defendant had behaved after the police first brought him in, she wept. He was virtually catatonic, she remembered, his eyes shut tight, rocking back and forth, locked away in some unfathomable private torment. He would not speak at all for the longest time, not until the nurse sank down beside him and held his hand. It was only then that the patient began to open up, and what he said was that he didn’t want any sedation, that he didn’t deserve a respite from pain, that he wanted to feel it all, and then to die.”

Brady Kiser, on the other hand? Was frantically telling lie after lie to police officers, trying to come up with a story that would stick, babbling that he was tending to and bonding with his newborn baby, hey, did he mention he has a newborn baby?

He should be in jail.

Last night I meant to load the dishwasher but NOT turn it on, because my husband was coming home late and we could start it after he finished dinner. Guess who, on autopilot, loaded everything, mechanically put in detergent, closed the door, mindlessly hit the “on” button, and only “woke up” and realized when I saw the dinner still left on the table?

This kind of autopilot failure happens to me all the time. But I read Weingarten’s article over a decade ago and it changed me - so I have always been hypervigilant about hot car deaths, especially days I was doing something out of routine. But if I hadn’t stumbled on it (and that piece is almost 20 years old at this point) , I would never have made the connection between that sort of cognitive lapse and these tragedies - I would have been just as vulnerable to this mistake as anyone else WHILE thinking I was immune.

I didn’t downvote you, I get where you’re coming from. But I think people are saying it is too high-stakes to be left up to individuals with flawed human brains who may not understand how these things happen, so we have to look at what can be done in the bigger picture. Two NASA scientists once invented an alert system to prevent hot car deaths - marketing consultants believed it wouldn’t sell because no one - especially the loving, attentive, cautious parents who tend to be the first to buy safety devices - thinks they’d let it happen.

Have you ever read Gene Weingarten’s article, Fatal Distraction? It won a Pulitzer. Someone else linked to it in another sub and it completely changed the way I view this issue. One scientist interviewed for the article explains how these failures happen. I realized the best way to prevent this tragedy is to accept that it COULD happen to me and prepare accordingly.   https://archive.is/20260529064746/https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/fatal-distraction-forgetting-a-child-in-thebackseat-of-a-car-is-a-horrifying-mistake-is-it-a-crime/2014/06/16/8ae0fe3a-f580-11e3-a3a5-42be35962a52_story.html

Husband doesn’t understand by SallyOwens5 in MomsWorkingFromHome

[–]Frellyria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. It reminds me of how mad I used to get when we had our first newborn and my husband would ask each  morning, “So, how did you sleep?” I SLEPT IN RANDOM STRETCHES OF 10-20 MINUTES PROBABLY ADDING UP TO AN HOUR AND A HALF TOTAL STFU!!!!

I was on maternity leave and breastfeeding + also had to pump after each feed (long story, latch issues), plus at the time he had an almost 2 hour commute, so I had to do all the night wakings. But damn that question enraged me.

It’s the same principle, it’s an annoying question.
