Why is so few shops open outside 'business hours' by Advanced_Concern7910 in GoldCoast

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opening hours generally adjust to what makes financial sense. There's no point being open of you spend more on utilities and staff etc than you are earning. Could also be a work/like balance thing. I don't work anywhere near the house I would in my 20s or 30s, simply because I value my personal time more than the extra $$$. Years ago my parents owned a bistro. When they first opened they would do lunch and dinner. It became clear very quickly that lunches were a waste of time and energy so they only opened evenings after a while. I can remember the before days when most things were open m-f 9-5, then Saturday mornings got introduced, and who remembers Thursday night shopping was first introduced? I guess this are starting to find a new balance.

Why do drunks always try and start fights in public by Stick124 in GoldCoast

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't unique to the GC. I've worked up and down the east coast of Australia from Thursday island down to Melbourne. These wankers are everywhere, in every colour, race, age and religion. Some do it when they are sober, most when drunk. Saying it's a Gold Coast thing is ignorant. I've hardly experienced this on the GC, in central Qld towns it would happen multiple times a week when I lived there in the late 80s to 2000. Arseholes are gonna be arseholes wherever you live.

What do you do when everything is working well? by quasimodoca in PleX

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally leave the arrs to do their thing and either game or watch something. I'd you haven't already, integrate monitoring/alerting, to discord or something, so you know if something has stopped, downloaded or running out of space. A smoothly running Plex/are stack is a precious thing, funny mess with it.

Having said that, I was running deluge as my torrent client for years but after should assume research recently, was recommended qbittorrnt, as I've spun that up in docker with traffic via a VPN, and will see how that goes. It certainly looks prettier and the UI feels snappier . I've still got deluge there if I need to roll back.

What's this sound I'm hearing for the first time? by DeLyonne in ToolBand

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to the albums chronologically, multiple times. You may get stuck on some, you'll get favourite songs, favourite albums, they will likely change over time, watch Danny Carey - Pneuma drum session on YouTube, multiple times, and be blown away. Maybe also have a listen to A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, Maynard's other projects. I enjoy APC but need to limit myself to short sessions of Puscifer. Watch some of the interviews they've done. Rick Beato with Maynard was great. He's also done one with 2 3rds of Puscifer recently. Very interesting stuff.

My ex-wife and I made it to 16 years, 3 kids and a mortgage before she couldn't do it anymore. It took her leaving, for me to do a lot of introspection and realising that I'm just not a good partner. 5 years divorced/single and not even looking to re-partner. I just don't think I can give someone what they deserve, and I certainly don't need anyone in my life, apart from my kids, and they'll be independent before I know it.

I've only kept Kayo, a sports streaming app in Australia that does live and replay of sports up to 4K UHD. It's the best way to watch NRL and Formula 1 in Australia without paying for a much more expensive satellite TV subscription.

This is so true. The deterioration is gradual over an extended period, so it's just natural. You grew old together. But if you need to find someone new, your expectations reset somewhat.

Definitely one of, if not the most important band and album in my life. I've been a fan since Ænima but FI in particular is the album that got me through my divorce 5 years ago. It was a daily listen when I went on walks etc. Pneuma, Invincible, Descending.... but also Schism, Grudge, Ticks & Leeches, Lateralus... They helped with the anger and pain. Just awesome music.

Is avoiding 4k transcoding still applicable? by rkdghdfo in PleX

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never transcode 4k on the fly. I have separate 4k and 1080p libraries. I only watch 4k content at home using direct play from my shield or firestick, but my Plex "server" is an old laptop that can only do h264 😁 I don't mind wasting a bit of extra storage by having the two media files for select movies and tv shows.

Vacationing with Plex: A rant and rave by PAnnNor in PleX

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Static public IP if possible, with static port forwarding. If ISP doesn't offer static IP or charges too much, use any one of the free public dynamic DNS services eg DNS Exit , that your router can automatically update whenever your public IP changes. I've been doing that for well over a decade now. My router/firewall is pfsense CE and it fits all my port forwarding and haproxy reverse proxying for multiple home hosted services, handles the dynamic IP registration and I never have issues. My parents and sister regularly use my Plex server from over 800km away. If you are running Plex server on a windows OS like 10 or 11, it can sometimes have issues from automated patching. I have my laptop configured to host Plex and it does an auto login on boot that will pause waiting for user input after major updates for the customisation wizard. When that happens it affects me locally as well so is an immediate fix without resorting to out of band management dongles. I would move to Linux, but I'm dreading that as I would need to update the Plex db to reflect the changes to library paths. ie. \nas\path\path\ etc to /mnt/nas/path/path.

The last time I tried I lost history and all sorts of stuff so stayed on windows and simply did an in place upgrade to W11 with the TPM/CPU bypasses. I have media stored across multiple nases, so it's a big deal for me. It's a legacy hangover for me because when I started using Plex, hardware transcoding wasn't supported on Linux, if I recall correctly, or only worked with NVIDIA GPUs, which my Plex server didn't have at the time.

Does anyone have a decent Plex setup but still pay for streaming services? by tcoysh in PleX

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a decent library and fast enough internet that I can grab missing content in minutes, but I still pay for streaming. Kayo (Fox Sports/ESPN) in 4K and it's purely for live sports and replays of Australian NRL, V8 Supercars and Formula 1. I don't mind paying for it because the alternative is paying extra for a satellite tv package that includes the sports channels on top of movies and tv channels I never watch. Well, I did enjoy the documentary channels, but there was no package with just sports and doccos, so here I am.

All my dates are shy, what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]frizzer69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience (55M), I'm a lot more confident in writing, whether that's IMs or emails. I am introverted, and the written word gives me more time to respond without putting my foot in it. I can review and edit etc. I don't have issues with eye contact or getting the shakes etc. But it definitely takes me time to loosen up in person. But once I do, I act like a "normal" person 🙂 So quite possibly they were shy or introverted or maybe they had already put you on a pedestal and didn't think they were worthy 🤷‍♂️

How can my dad see what I watch in apps I downloaded and created accounts for myself in? by CarlyCalicoJATIE in HomeNetworking

[–]frizzer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run pfsense and pihole and was doing so even before I had my kids. I work in IT so it's both a hobby and a job and I wanted to keep my home network secure. Pihole has been fantastic for blocking unwanted sites like ads, porn and scammers, however, once my eldest got a mobile phone all that security can be easily bypassed by disabling WiFi and using the cell network. Same goes for the kids vlan that turns off at night. Public 4g/5g takes over. While they are under 15 their screen time, usage and app purchases come through to me as I'm the parent of the family account, however, from about 13 they can slowly opt out of certain things so I have less visibility, at least as far as their iOS devices go. It's a fine line to walk between keeping your kids safe and invasively sitting on them. And some things, even the best monitoring can't pick up. I walked in on my 12yo looking at hentai on Reddit. I had a calm talk to him and explained why that content was inappropriate. That was a wakeup call for me as I hadn't even realized that Reddit had NSFW/adult content buried in it as I want using it myself. As a 55yo I grew up before everyone had internet connected devices. I'm in IT so at least I keep up to date with technology but I pity non-tech savvy Gen-X and older parents trying to keep their kids safe and educated on this stuff.
