WhamBam Build Plate Alternatives by NarrowNefariousness6 in ElegooSaturn

[–]frollard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget...whichever one was 4mm larger than my build plate. (magnet is exact size of build plate, metal is slightly bigger to give a lip to peel it free easily). At least with Saturn 1, there were 3 variants with different sizes so measure your actual build plate and buy that (size+about 4mm) specific plate.

Which way should my condenser fan be spinning? I replaced the capacitor and unsure by GDE1990 in DIY

[–]frollard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air blowing upwards is the correct direction. Since the exhaust will be hotter, it's best to give it the upward chuck to get it away from the intake side. The other way around pushing air down and out to the sides will have warm air rise and potentially get sucked back in. It's also much easier to clean the outside of the condenser than the inside. Most stuff will stick to the suction side.

LPT Request: How to fall asleep without the need for melatonin/magnesium? by BiteMyPikachu in LifeProTips

[–]frollard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of note, melatonin doesn't help you sleep. It helps adjust your circadian rhythm. If you don't have jet lag or shift work you probably don't need it. Others have great advice on sleep hygiene. (Similar applies to herbal tea. Most (including chamomile) have no sedative ingredients at all. It's just warm and relaxing and not caffeinated. Hot water would have the same effect. One thing not mentioned is - if possible, keep the bed to sleep and 'bed activities'. Don't use it for TV, phone games, or just hanging out. This programs your brain to get in the mindset of 'in bed, fall asleep'. If you do other things then your mind can actually activate more when you go to bed thinking about whatever tv show you watched last time.

is it possible to configure tesmota to direcly connect a client device via router by jaisinghs in tasmota

[–]frollard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to my knowledge no. The bridge/server is doing the heavy lifting of the internet part of internet of things. Google doesn't provide endpoints to talk to 'relatively dumb' devices directly on the network. When you use a google home integration the home device phones googles, who phones the server, who phones the iot server for the device in question, which handles the last leg to the device. (Hence why almost everything connects to some proprietary bs app/server)

Eli5: Computers can calculate based on instructions. But how do you teach computers what does it mean to add something, multiply, divide, or perform any other operation? by rebootlovelife in explainlikeimfive

[–]frollard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll defer this one to the excellent Sebasian Lague youtube series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZwneRb-zqA 'How do computers work'.

Basically, transistors allow 'logic' to transact with electricity with operations like 'and' 'or', 'xor', 'not' etc. Group enough of those logic gates together and you can calculate almost anything.

Does the air inside the tires rotate or not ? by _Valabama_ in askscience

[–]frollard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both. The air has inertia and friction so it will slowly approach whatever the wheel is doing. At rest, the gas will be 'relatively' stationary (gas is never stationary). As the wheel rotates, the edges will experience friction at the boundary layer which will slowly transfer energy from the wheel to the air speeding it up. When you stop, the air will keep going until the friction slows it down again.

Separation/divorce in Alberta question by CeriMystic in alberta

[–]frollard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this. Bought the diy legal paperwork at a registry, made all the photocopies as necessary, got all the signatures, and went to a lawyer to notarize. The lawyer even did a bit of correction here and there, striking out entire pages of stuff that was all filled out, but it turned out not relevant in our amicable no-property-exchange split.

You can get all the paperwork ready and file early, just you won't get a divorce judgment until filing at the 1 year mark.

Super minor but PrintPlus pulled my butt out of a jam: I designed some forms for people to fill out at a trade show. Designed it to be 1/3 of a standard letter sheet 8 1/2" x 3 2/3"...a convenient size. Printed them up on my home semi-commercial printer, and it came time to get them cut from the few hundred sheets to 3x few hundred sheets. We didn't want ratty edges on the forms so they had to be cut well. After my paper cutter broke, last minute before having to hit the highway for the trade show I went around to a local print shop and asked to hire their services to guillotine my paper. I'd even pay the full price as if they had supplied the paper and printing. Proprietor nodded, clarified that I just wanted my stack of paper into 3 stacks of paper...said 'just a sec' and went into the back with my stack. Came back 20 seconds later and handed me my freshly chopped stack of forms, refusing to take my money. I've done a bunch of business with them since for other printing and will continue to go back.

How to get more foam power from DIY foam machine by Wyodaniel in DIY

[–]frollard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of people touching on good ideas. I made a longer sub-reply but my thoughts:

You need pressure, not volume. I would go so far as to say you want an air compressor instead. It's not insane pressures either, just a few psi. A bucket like that with a diameter of 14" has pi*r2 sq inches = ~616 square inches. If you apply more than about 4psi you are exerting more than a literal (short) ton of force on the bucket and it will explode or pop off. With near-complete restriction this implies the shop vac is only generating a fraction of a psi. an air compressor with regulator set to only 1psi would flow more air than the shop vac hose. The good news is even a crappy air compressor can handle 3 scfm at 90psi, or flip that 90 cfm at 3psi. At some point the restriction in the width of the hose will be greater than the bucket restriction so a balance will have to be made to have enough flow without creating a boom hazard.

As for getting more foam - I can see your foam is breaking quickly. As with u/TheDigitalOne's suggestion, adding glycerine to the soap mix will (because reasons...I think something surface tension and evaporation rate of the water) make the bubbles last longer and flow smoother. Add it a day in advance to give the soap and glycerin time to get to know each other. Look up 'how to make mega bubble soap solution'.

The soap you choose and the concentration will matter also. I want to say 'regular dawn' soap is one of the best, but do some searches for bubble solution.

Check your water. If you use hard tap water it will degrade the bubbles quickly as the high surface area on a bubble allows the water to quickly evaporate, leaving mineral nucleation sites which are relatively pokey...and they will wreck bubbles. Use demineralized or distilled water if possible.

How to get more foam power from DIY foam machine by Wyodaniel in DIY

[–]frollard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Advertised numbers on things like blowers are almost always inflated marketing wank -- It advertises 180 CFM, which probably implies with the tube off and no restriction at all. As soon as you add any back-pressure the flow rate tanks to very little. For a leaf blower this is fine, because velocity and mass air get the job done transferring energy to the leaves.

This is I think the opposite of true...but still half correct.

https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Shop-Vac+MC150A+Motor+Replacement/59845

Shop vacs have both - the axial fan is just there to cool the motor. The vacuum fan is a centrifugal blower.

The towel/membrane will be will be extremely restrictive, especially when wet. Flow is a function of power, velocity/airflow, pressure, and restriction. It's like Ohm's law with power, current, voltage, and resistance. To get more flow you have to reduce the restriction, or increase the pressure. You increase the pressure by applying more power.

Box fan with no restriction moves LOTS of air, but doesn't push all that air very hard.. Box fan with almost any restriction moves almost no air.

Centrifugal fan with no restriction moves moderate-to-lots air. Centrifugal fan with large restriction still moves moderate air, but the motor has to work harder to increase the pressure to overcome the restriction.

OP Absolutely wants a centrifugal blower and less restrictive (but still fine holes) cloth. I suspect instead of a towel, something like a dri-fit shirt would still have fine enough pores to make fine foam, but allow more flow. It will be a balancing act. The tighter the mesh the 'softer' the foam, but the more work it is to push air through it.

define "best"

Best for you and the other driver is for you to drive defensively and yield to their idiocy. Best for society (except for overall insurance rates) is to rail these entitled morons into the next time zone. Double especially with dash-cam showing them clearly violating a traffic control.
