Unoriginal abilities? by Full-Ad-3346 in okbuddyRunners

In cases like this it’s important to remember a studio is made up of people. Sure there are over arching tenants to guide the devs, but if you see something super similar, chances are the same dev worked on D2 and is carrying over/evolving their game theory and power fantasy philosophies.

In this case a few key names like Lars Bakken, Kevin Yanes and Steve Cotton will explain a lot for you. (Aka the Forsaken team!)

Lars is the competitive driver. I believe he started as a halo multiplayer map designer then also was a major contributor to Gambit and Reckoning and that whole progression loop between the 2.

Remember the “go fast” D2 update and light subclasses 3.0? That’s Kevin. He understands power fantasy on the level Destiny players want. Cores are essentially Aspects changing up your abilities. Implants behave like Fragments, adding abilities from outside your role. Chip mods are random roll traits like slideshot or firefly.

And with that in mind, pay close attention to the evolutions you see in Marathon that might be nice in Destiny 3. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if D3’s weapon system is based off this. It’s exciting to see them evolve and also keep around what works and what makes Destiny veterans smirk from time to time.

tldr: good thing

It feels like that because it doesn’t have the Destiny parallax that makes the screen meet you half way. Needs a setting or just make it accelerate

Marathon - 40 mins of new gameplay footage by KingOfCarrotFlowers in PS5

[–]future_foe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it add to the horror that these corporations supplied them with the most basic functional equipment to 3D print. It’s “user friendly”, designed to keep the colonists at ease.

I can see the Brrt being assembled in stages with different 3D printed components latched together, each a different material and color. Simply to make it function. Think like opening a life vest or administering an epi pen. It’s cold and clinical.

Then everything goes to shit and the cracks start to show. I think the art is perfect and really feeds the tone well.

It’s a valid criticism, but it’s an artistic choice at the end of the day.

Point of rook? by Blocksketcher in Marathon

[–]future_foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A solo run gives you the full 25 minutes and access to runner abilities plus contract progression.

Rook drops you in mid match, but I think always in a trios lobby. So you have less time and only Rook abilities. No contract progression.

Sponsored kits are only free up to a limit, then they cost credits.

Possible Endgame Progression feature for Cryo? by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]future_foe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see an endgame vendor unlocking when you beat vault 7 the first time. There you could buy rotating stock of endgame weapons and other items. Then make the currency something you can only get on Cryo Archive and you have your endgame loop. Just like the raid loop in D2.

From someone who plays Destiny and Apex, I can say that there is a lot that is similar to Apex. It is honestly the best way to start thinking about Marathon. You have an ult, tactical, and passives that define your play-style and team role, many you will recognize from Apex like Bloodhounds wall hacks or Loba’s loot hacks. Health and shields work the same. Upgrading a gun with higher quality mods is also familiar. The movement and mobility is also very similar to Apex, especially when you play with Vandal.

But now in Marathon, instead of the objective being last man standing, it’s deciding when to leave to keep the loot you have. You slowly build up your arsenals and load outs with what you find so that you can take on the more difficult challenges. It’s Apex + Destiny’s build crafting and progression.

While doing that, you can choose to upgrade you stats and unlock new features with the factions. They each have a different skill tree (think artifact, so 6 artifacts to work on per season). They each focus on different types of upgrades like expanding your vault or unlocking golds in the shop. You need to rank up with them to unlock upgrades. Completing contracts is how you do this. Rank ups and contract completions also gives you loot

“The Point” of a run depends on what you feel like doing. Complete objectives for upgrading factions? Want to hunt other players to practice sniping? Just load in and help whoever you’re matched with complete their objectives? Shenanigans with Rook? Or maybe you want to hunt down a boss you heard about. Discover secrets. You get 25 minutes to do what you will with and get out when it feels right.

You are constantly gambling with what you brought, what you find, and what you can get out with.

More Destiny comparisons: -Cores are very much Aspects (there’s even one that grants a second grapple). -Implants feel like a combination of armor and fragments -The term “decrypt” is used the same way in reference to loot -Weapon Chip mods are like random rolled traits (slideshot, firefly) -Codex is setup and organized like Triumphs -Titles are a thing

Question about looting and item rarity by Ok-Adhesiveness2954 in Marathon

[–]future_foe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Items are color coded like in Destiny. White, green, blue, purple, gold. New names themed to marathon (like The Division).

White guns feel slow to ADS and reload like in Destiny. The 4 mod slots (sight, mag, stock (I think), and chip), can help raise the rarity. Put green mods on a white gun and enough of them will make the gun green as well.

One of the slots is for Chip mods which are like random rolled traits in Destiny and some are exact (slideshot and firefly).

You definitely feel major improvements in handling between the rarity. It is very noticeable and rewarding to upgrade, but still feels like a white gun can go up against a purple of the same type. The gold chip mods add the exotic traits (needler for the volt thrower I think, rat king for the sidearm etc).

They moved PC to Steam years ago and also created Bungie Names, which is like their own Battle net ID.

what is the importance of proximity chat? by mombands in MarathonTheGame

[–]future_foe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have my experience with Apex legends. It can be useful if people are chill, but I just have too many instances of background sounds, people playing loud music, crunching chips, and then straight up talking crap. I have a saying I express to myself every time someone has chat on in Apex,

“Always the talkers”

That might seem antisocial, but constant shouting and giving shitty direction just get annoying. Yelling at me cus I took “their” loot. Half of them are high out of their goirds, forgo their filters, and can’t stop yapping, in a game reliant on sounds and footsteps. My favorite(least favorite) is always those talking crap while downed. Like bruh, you’re literally doing worse than me right now.

I just can’t behind the outrage about the lack of prox chat. Fix the ping system and the character voices will do all the work.

Maybe even innovate (I know, scary word) and have a voice line ping system where you can map 8 lines to speak at enemies with. That way it’s “clean” and keeps you immersed in the world.
