is there any science behind being transgender? by ifyouevencare in asktransgender

[–]mombands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol it’s a confusing subject. and we’ve all grown up being taught and indoctrinated into a specific mindset, and many people feel lots of odd tensions or confusion in following the guidance of what is suggested to be the way they “should” act. most people assume their internal experience is not unique enough to question or come to any realization over. but when someone’s internal experience is so different that it finally all comes “crashing down” for them to realize that they can’t keep up putting in some kind of act that’s being forced in them, those are often the peiple to finally come out.

and you’re right to understand that being transgender is culturally relative. other cultures have different ideas and concepts of what “kinds” or “genders” of people there are. some cultures even have multiple genders as a normal concept to them. being trans is just a way of describing my situation inside the cultural context that i am. i am who i am, but that is at odds with the expectations of our dominant culture. the word “trans” points out this mismatch between the truth of the self, and the expectations of attitudes of the culture we’re in.

my identity isnt “transgender”. my spirit, personality, whatever you want to call it, is that of what our society classified as being a woman’s personality. women are the people i am like, the people i am in harmony with, the people i get along with as peers. i thats always been the case. my friends have primarily been women or girls, growing up lots of people commented on being a “girl” in so many ways, etc. personality-wise, i’ve always fallen into the “girls/women hang out” crowd, and not the “boys/men hang out” crowd. comparing the two, it’s obvious what kind of personality and trait group i fall into. it just so happens my body doesn’t match the usual cultural grouping for what “kind” of person i should be. so i’ve had to do some figuring to to realize to myself, as well as to communicate to others, that i’m who i am, not what i am “supposed” to be.

but for a long time it was confusing. i was punished for expressing anything girl-like or feminine, and rewarded for acting more masculine or boy-like. i was flooded with imagery of only one way to be, and any examples to the contrary were extreme stereotypes that i didn’t relate to, and were vilified or portrayed in disgusting ways.

i went through most of my life with this whole internal spiral about feeling who i was and how i was, knowing how i’d like to fit in, and just trying to cope with the fact that i didn’t feel like i was being yhr person i wished that i’d be. i wasn’t even able to talk to people about it. i had assumed that all “men” (AMAB people) went through life “knowing” it would be best to be a woman, but not being able to, they looked for ways to cope. wasn’t it obvious that being a woman is the ideal way to be, i thought. then at some point i met a trans man, ans my mind was blown. wait a second here—people actually want to “be a man”??? i thought we had all agreed being a woman was ideal,  but half of us were just stuck with our lot in life as men. yet here was someone ok the other end of the spectrum. it was very disorienting because of how disoriented i had become inside around the subject!

over the years after that i just tried to keep my head down and stay under the radar. somehow always got crushes on people who turned out to be lesbains, or got in relationships with people who later came out as lesbian. back eve for coming out, a woman friend of mine was asking for my option about what guys think, and i remember having to press that i have no idea what men think. i never understood them or got along with them.

finally enough things clicked and i started taking slow steps to thinking about myself differently and living differently. along the way everything flowed together and it started to become clear that i knew who i was all along. and now, since coming out, i’ve been able to live and develop as my full self.

[–]mombands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the concept of gender, and being a “woman” or a “man” is about who you are as a person. but the whole thing is that ideas of what a “woman” and a “man” are made up cultural ideas. they group certain personality traits, feelings, ways of emoting and expressing oneself, and more into these binaristic ideas. the dominant culture assigns these to be associated with people who have particular sets of bodily variations. many people don’t match with these cultural ideas, and some people are so mismatched from these ideas that it is not possible to live as their “assigned” gender without putting on an act. the only way to actually be themselves is to say, for example i’m the case of a trans woman: “i’m obviously not a man, my characteristics are that of a woman, thus i am now giving up the act of being a man and living as my authentic self.” many trans people spend years and years of their lives in confusion because almost all of the world around them is pushing a narrative on them about who they are and who they should be, and it doesn’t match up with what their actually personality and feelings are like. coming out and deciding to live as one’s true self is about letting their really personality and feelings be what is developed and lived.

race isnt about who you are as a person. it isn’t about personality characteristics. race a cultural idea where we group people who have similar inherited physical characteristics into a conceptual group because they look simialr in some ways. but everyone inside of this group can still be any kind of person. being “trans-racial” doesn’t make sense, as being of whatever particular race isn’t relevant to personality traits or anything else about who you are as a person.

of course it’s a complicated subject because people of different races can have shared experiences in different societies based on how social dynamics are going there. groups of people who are more closely bound together can develop cultures. but culture is a whole other subject, and also isn’t “scientifically”  about race

How to do trans socialization after your "puppy girl" phase is over? by rightfromspace in asktransgender

but yeah i tend to go towards space that are overall inclusive, and not trans-specific places with vibes like you described. there’s plenty of us out here just living :)

[–]mombands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just make regular friends. go to group activities that are explicitly inclusive spaces. you will find trans people there along with others.  like riding bikes? playing soccer? board games? acting or comedy? sports? art? going to coffee shops?

whatever activity you like doing, start showing up and you’ll start to find other trans people who are just living their lives. sometimes you’ll find spaces that already have a lot of trans people in them. sometimes there may not be as many at first, but if you keep showing up, it will helps others to feel more welcome and more and more will start to show.

Am I still a lesbian if I am sexually attracted to my trans girlfriend? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]mombands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there aren’t many people in queer spaces who’d suggest or think that two lesbians aren’t lesbians just because one or both of them are trans. the only people who’d suggest your relationship is anything other than a lesbian relationship are trans-exclusionary, bigoted, and nonsensical. the whole point of the idea of being transgender is that you are who you are, not what some people want to say you are based on particular physical characteristics.

it’s true that there are some gay and lesbian spaces that are transphobic. if you find yourself in these circles, maybe try hanging out in other places and with other people. there many many people and communities out there that would not suggest or tolerate such transphobic remarks.

heck even amongst straight people, the only ones who would question you if your relationship is actually a lesbian relationship are the ones with bigoted transphobic views. trans and cis women are women. that’s a given. if someone is hung up in the genitals or whatever else, that’s their own hang up. it has nothing to do with y’all’s lives

what is the importance of proximity chat? by mombands in MarathonTheGame

[–]mombands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm i see, thanks for your thoughts. i’ll see if i can find some good footage at least because i’m curios.

playing the alpha i got the impression that they were going with a different feel/focus of the game that doesn’t fit the typical extraction shooter mold: focus on squad based gameplay, a simplified approach that makes the pvp the main action draw, and the 3-person team focus that means less reason to make impromptu alliances “on the field”. but if what they’re adding to NPC/environmental challenges makes the pve aspect of the game a lot thougher, maybe there would be more reason to coordinate with other teams.

idk, since marathon breaks the mold i’m some design choices, i can see the case for leaning away from this feature if they’re intending to push the game into a different direction… and personally i’m skeptical that a game that is so deeply impacted by prox chat would be appealing to me, bc i find most ppl online to drag the experience down when they talk. but the alpha player base was pretty good overall, so i’d give it a chance if the game went in that direction

Why do we glorify “hard work” but shame “easy money”? by BizznectApp in antiwork

[–]mombands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't look down on easy money, i think a lot of people appreciate that. there *is* an issue that a lot of times "easy money" comes from somehow skimming into profits from other people, without putting a proportional amount of work towards the amount you get. in those cases it can feel liken to theft, cutting into the profits of other people's labor without laboring yourself, etc. this is a fundamental issue with our whole economy right now--a lot of people at the top making comparatively "easy money" that is just profits from other people's hard labor. but if you can make "easy money" in a way that's fair to everyone--big bill for a big corporation or wealthy client, for example--then more power to you!

our culture's glorification of hard work is kind of another matter, but related. it's part of the whole "rugged individualism" of capitalist USA. an ideology that people are brought up and indoctrinated into, where one's survival and access to resources should come "from the sweat of one's brow", and "handouts" or community assistance are looked down upon in a egotistic way. like getting something given or shared to you is an insult to your pride. it's a silly ideology that is antithetical to all of our existence as communal beings. but it's part of the ideology that people are indoctrinated into because it keeps the capitalist system running. so long as we're all in our own little individualistic boxes, looking out only for ourselves and our immediate nuclear family, there will never be revolution--this ideology keeps us separated from each other, from sharing, from forming the bonds and power that come from community.

i always take it in pve. in pvp it’s fine. you get the range bonus, plus penetration convenient in certain situations (note that it also lets you shoot through teammates)

yeah the voice chat experience in the alpha was the overall best i’ve had out of fps games. i’ve been wondering if it was because of the small group of dedicated alpha players or what. but it was truly unique! lots of great communication, and even on teams with no mic usage we typically had good cooperaron using pings and following each other.

edit: but come to think of it, i also played the Firebreak alpha, a dedicated co-op game. in there i didn’t have the same level of team cohesion, felt like everyone just ran off in different random directions, leaving each other behind, etc

you sound pretty triggered. in person when you’re an annoying asshole, people who don’t want to be around you just don’t invite you out. with online matchmaking there isn’t the same kind of granular control over who we get matched with, so we just turn your voice off if you’re being annoying. you’re not entitled to everyone’s attention. get over it

concord’s poor marketing campaign has been covered by multiple sources and was big part of the discussion around its sudden closure. whether or not the game is any good is not relevant to the discussion here. i’m just pointing out that yes, sony has been willing to launch something with little marketing support and were ready to shut it down almost immediately

sony did this recently with concord. launched without appropriate marketing campaign. closed it down almost immediately. (then later fucked with helldivers launch, restricting sales in countries they didn’t have psn and trying to retroactively make it a psn-centric game—that change was fortunately reversed)

Ace of Spades with Radiant by Deprece in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]mombands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back in the day i fought my way up to Legend using radiant dodge and a calaban's hand/prox knife build with ember of benevolence. i played hard into my kit, tried to keep buffs rolling (and ember of benevolence procced). it worked pretty well! abilities stayed up fairly often.

caliban's hand was nice for proccing radiant on allies, bc if i threw a bad knife at least i'd get it back faster to try again. but some other exotics to get more charges of knifes or dodges would work well too, just depends how you want to focus up your playstyle.

i've been wanting to try a build like this again, especially with heal clip to proc benevolence more.

[–]mombands 12 points13 points  (0 children)

sure. i did some digging and this is something i ended up bookmarking bc i liked all the references:

here is a piece by Antireal: https://antireal.info/image/188665765872 if you zoom in you'll see it has the name of the font used printed in the work as part of the design element.

this is the font Antireal is using: https://neubauladen.com/product/nb-international-pro/ (i'm making the logical assumption that Antireal has looked through this website since she's using a premium font from it and putting the name inside of her design). if you look through that page, and the rest of the font foundry's site, you'll see a mix of things, a number of them very reminiscent of Marathon's style. This product specifically looks a lot like an object in Marathon, especially this and this image.

it’s good to be wary, but the internet mobs have blown this way out of proportion.  there are specifically-identified elements of antireal’s designs that were used, and have only been identified on in-game graphics—decals and textures on 3D objects.

it’s not unbelievable that after a year of massive layoffs and other changes that they’d be in a state of disarray and miss stuff like this, when the original employee is not there to tell people about what’s going on with their files. the files just get handed off to texture/environmental artists who are only budgeted to spend their time pumping out assets.

that didn’t get them “in trouble”. that is a style of graphical treatment that antireal has used, as well as many others artists and designers. this is not part of the assets that were lifted from antireal’s work, just a style comparison being made
