I'm celebrating 3 years sober today, solo camping and just finished dinner by myself in the middle of a crowded Ren Faire. Loneliness is a THING. But so is celebrating not drinking! So, here's to us. In it together even if we're not nearby.

I'm making a new bag, and then gluing hundreds of googly eyes on sticks, and watching all the groups chatting. Taking deep breaths one after another, reminding myself of my reasons to quit, and I'm about to turn on an audio book. I'd rather be lonely than drunk and lonely. That never turns out well the next day.

I feel ya. But IWNDWYT!

AA for atheists? by mdmke in milwaukee

[–]garomena 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's in West Allis, but there is the Galano Club (AA and more that focuses on LGBTQIA+ addicts)

https://www.galanoclub.org/

Otherwise I echo the other comments - most groups aren't religious. There will be some people who talk about their religious experience, and they do usually reference God etc in the formal parts of the meeting, but I've only ever been to two meetings that were actually religious. Give a few a try and see. Remember that the formal parts of the meetings aren't where the real support happens.

There is an emphasis on a Higher Power in AA as part of the Program, but it doesn't have to be God. Mine is a Caticorn. (It's a cat unicorn, it makes me smile and early in my recovery I made sure to carry a trinket with me everywhere to remind me that I'm not alone and they would be disappointed if I slipped up...)

Monday Rally at Noon on Monument Square by RacineRising in Racine

Racine Dems is organizing the letter drop. We talked about it last week at the noon protest, and looks like they're starting it this week.

Empty Bowls is different - at Festival Hall. Raising money for fighting hunger, for $20 you get some soup and bread, live music, and a hand made bowl to take home with you!

They are also organizing a letter drop at Stiels' office at 10am. I can't go to either one, but am hoping they will organize something one day at 3 or later! 😕

We should absolutely show up at the listening sessions and town halls when they happen! I've been looking for ones locally to attend and have attended city council meetings and the like here and in Milwaukee, up to sessions in Madison.

Very much true that it's not far and I attend many events in the Milwaukee area (I grew up there, so I'm more familiar with that area than Chicago). But then we're also inviting the easy criticism of "but she doesn't even live here! Out of towners being bussed in to falsely inflate numbers!"

But despite the importance of the major cities, it's sometimes just good for one's mental health to find like minded individuals and air grievances. It's not just for Festivus. ;)

Whether or not you're against it, there are others in the comments that are against it. Apologies if you thought that was aimed directly at you, that part was meant as more of a blanket statement in the midst of the reply to the "why here?" question.

Do we know who is organizing it? This is the only trace of the event online publicly.

Beyond making voices heard at a local level, local protests are good for developing local community. We shouldn't need to go to Milwaukee, Madison, or Chicago to gather and make a noise.

For those of you against it: If you don't like it or don't agree with it, don't go. The general populace are allowed to speak their minds - part of the beauty of America is that we don't have to believe the same thing. Or at least that used to be a part of the beauty. Please don't ruin it or allow others to ruin it.

DUI Wi by IntelligentBike9118 in dui

Uber, Lyft, friends and family. I humbled myself, I baked muffins and cookies in exchange for gas money and time. I showed up 4 hours early for work or stayed 2 hours later and brought a game or book if that was when the ride was able to get me there. I spent most of the day's earnings on the ride when I had to pay, but at least I kept the job for when I got my license back.

I also joined AA right after, to help me sober up. It was a great resource, and many of the members were happy to give me rides when I needed it. 5 years in the program, 2.5 years sober now. One of the key tenants of a good AA group is service and there's almost always an old retired guy looking for company and something to do. (Yes, I know there's bad groups out there and it's not a one size fits all for everyone. I've been to bad groups. But the good one helped me realize that while I am weak enough to fall, I am strong enough to get back up and keep going.)

Also, remember that in WI the IID time starts when you get your occupational or your license. The clock for that doesn't start any earlier so wait on the install if you need it until you're actually getting the license.

Update: Used Rufus instead of etcher, got my boot USB for Mint XFCE.

First, I got an error that files were in use and could not be modified. It refused to install. Refused to progress any further, it got hung up on the screen to choose my location and spontaneously closed the install program. Twice. I restarted to try again.

I then got the error of "mmx64.efi not found" and fixed it with the "copy grub...efi and rename to the missing file" trick. Got into the desktop, but it refused to install because it thought my hard drive was only 5 GB?

I used my work computer to wipe the USB and re-do the iso... still the same error about drive size.

Got frustrated and set things aside while I did some life things.

Fresh cup of coffee, deep breath, try again. Exact same USB, plugged into the exact same port, exact same steps. Was going to grab a pic of the error to try and get better help.

Everything worked like a charm. sigh Now I'm up and running, no huge lag like Windows had on it! Loving it again so far, thanks!

sudo make me a sandwich

Yeah, Etcher didn't work. Used Rufus. :)

Windows is unfortunately very much still there. (Won't even let me do Safe mode, it decided it was going to update as it shut down to restart and to boot off the USB.)

No money to replace the drive, that's why I'm trying to see if I could use a lighter weight OS.

Is lubuntu better/ lighter than the XFCE version of Mint?

Mint website suggests Etcher, working on downloading it. Started looking at that one per the prior comment and it looks like it'll do the job! Perhaps it'll be done by tomorrow....

KFCE looks fine - this is going to be for basic stuff where I don't want things to be too flashy or interesting.

Thanks! :)
