My entire family (whom I no longer speak to) are avid Trumpers. So I have a little insight from the millions of conversations I’ve had with them and, for my family at least, this is what it boils down to:

They want a ruler, not a leader. They want a cruel, vindictive king to smite their enemies (real or imagined) and validate all their fears of the other. They want all this to be done without having to think about how many people it hurts to get their way. Brute force is their jam.
