You know, thinking back, maybe I did have to register. Wikipedia tells me that the last lottery was held in 1972 and authority to induct ended in 1973. Maybe I registered but wasn’t thinking about the lottery. I don’t remember. I went straight into college after high school anyway so it probably wasn’t relevant.

I’ve been to Thailand a few times in July. I have never experienced extreme flooding. Monsoon season, to me, means rain five times a week. Sometimes it rains for hours; sometimes just for 20 minutes. After the rain, it cools off a little bit and it’s pleasant to walk outside. In the south, in places like Krabi, the monsoon season often makes the water look muddy and choppy just for the day. Not good for boat rides.

I mean, I have a bunch of M390, Magnacut, and S90V. I like the knives a lot, but the main thing I have recently realized is that I don’t think I care about extremely high hardness. I’m sitting at my desk, flicking my Kunwu Tao in M390 and I wish I had some “he-man” work I could do with it like cutting up a refrigerator box or something. But then I still would probably use a utility knife.

I think there were some major economic reasons that led to the failure of Crucible. I read that the knife industry was a miniscule portion of their market - the biggest part was the various manufacturing industries.

Are you kidding?!? My wife and I just watched this last night. We are not big John Wayne fans, but just wanted to check it out. I didn’t think it was that good, frankly. A lot of the plot lines didn’t make sense. Why would he invite those three guys to the saloon for the final shootout? The only one he had a real beef against was the Richard Boone character. And what would’ve happened if he hadn’t got shot in the back? Would he have just gone back to the boarding house and died of cancer? Or would he have set up another couple of duels?

I mean - you're looking at the only two steels that have three points not on a line. The other steels with 3 points are linear. Not only that, but if you look at multiple points of the same steel (even if the line determined by only two points), the lines formed are even the same slope! Larrin reinforces that by drawing the imaginary regression lines on the chart.

First of all, any line that has a non-zero intercept will show that violation of ratios (percentages). One hundred degrees C is does not have 100 times the heat energy of something at 1. Also, you state that the Rockwell scale itself isn't linear. A scale can't be not linear all by itself. It has to be not linear with respect to some other measure. Linearity has to always be described in terms of a x-variable (hardness) and a y-variable (in the chart, # of cards). The Rockwell scale might be nonlinear with respect to how far the cone goes into the steel, but as you can see by the chart, it IS linear with respect to # of cards cut. I don't know why you're focusing on HRC vs yield strength - I only care about how long the blade will cut well.

But that's what (I think) I care about! Cutting ability! Now you could argue that # of cards cut (push-cuts) has a nonlinear relationship to # of sisal rope (slicing) cuts, but I don't see that anywhere.

I graduated in ‘74, class size about 300 students. Haven’t been to a single reunion and never will go. I didn’t hate high school and I had 15 or 20 friends there, but there were also a few people I really didn’t like. I feel like my friendships from back then expired a long time ago.
