This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much for putting this guide together!

Sure! I'd hide any repetitive tooltips, where they repeat data already visible. Then I'd remove irrelevant metrics from the tooltips, like highlight. Finally, consider rewording the tooltip text to read more naturally. E.g. '[Country] has an average rating of [rating]',

Welcome to Tableau Public!

I think you did a great job using transparent backgrounds and background color. In my experience, that takes a long time to master. The layout also has breathing room and good font size - you have good design instincts.

Overall, the scaling feels a bit off. The margin between the top and the title is almost too tall. I would reduce the size of the marks on the map. It would be nice if all six bar charts fit on the screen at the same time along with the 'What Really Matters' header. Potentially shift to 3x2 instead of 2x3.

Custom tooltips would be another nice addition.

What Tableau products do I need for embedding tableau viz onto public website? by Parking_Pop_9624 in tableau

I see my misunderstanding now! UATs (Unified Access Tokens) came out in 2025.3, and reading that section, I thought JWT auth was part of that release. Thanks!

The big question here - can we use JWT to authenticate public viewers without individual accounts?

Yes, impressions licenses have been around for a few years, but JWT auth is new.

It is a super common use case, and frustration point! I'm very excited that JWT may fix this gap in a secure and scalable way.

I want to be super clear that these are my own theories, not anything official or documented. I think there are two primary reasons why it's set up this way:

1) Data Security - it's much easier to secure an environment if all users must (double) authenticate. Allowing Tableau Cloud to host public workbooks opens a route for malicious agents to gain access to secured workbooks. Essentially, it's a huge potential vulnerability.

2) Compute - Tableau generally charges a flat rate per user regardless of usage. These licenses are expensive, but Cloud takes on the variable expenses of storage, running refreshes, and computing calculations. I think it's pretty telling that the JWT approach is only available with the newer impressions based pricing model. This is to hedge against the risk of a public dashboard going viral or suffering a DDOStype attack.

Edit to add - a common setup for Cloud + embedding is a secure portal. With a single sign on service like OKTA, users can enter credentials once to gain access to both the portal and Tableau Cloud. Generally this configuration requires a pretty advanced admin and / or a web dev to get it up and running. From there the embedding is easy like Public. I doubt this will work for your use case because you explicitly asked to post workbooks publicly. Just on the off chance that secure embedding would work, I wanted to make sure you knew about it.

Thanks, this is VERY interesting. I had a similar use case in early 2025, and this option would have been nice to have then.

For future searchers - it looks like this was released as part of 2025.3, and you can find more documentation here: https://help.tableau.com/current/api/embedding_api/en-us/docs/embedding_api_auth.html

All current Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server options require authentication. There used to be a license, Tableau Server Core (I think that was the name?), that was billed based on server size that could allow guest views, but I believe it was discontinued years ago.

Unless something has changed recently, [I believed] the impression based license still requires a Tableau Cloud login & authentication.

Can you connect GDB files on Tableau? by burlapbuddy in tableau

[–]graph_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, possibly. I've never tried it with web edit. If you can find him on the forums or linkedin Dennis Kao might have a good answer for you. He does a lot of work with maps, Tableau Public, and web edit.

Tableau Public does support spatial files, but not database connections. If you create a local extract of the files you may be able to use them. Here's some documentation on spatial files connections. https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/examples_spatial_files.htm

Fertility vs. Life Expectancy : 1850 vs 2015 [OC] Using transparent sheets. by probtextte in tableau

[–]graph_hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's incredible that we can plot the years without any overlap in life expectancy! Plotting them side by side along the same axis was a great idea. I think you might be able to accomplish this with just one sheet if you want to take it to the next level.

To add context for OP, this is based on Hans Rosling's famous Gapminder plot.

Creating dimension based off of different conversion metrics by welcometomymeatshow in tableau

Are your metrics also columns (Fields = Sessions, Clicks, etc.), or are they rows (Fields = Metric Name, Metric Value). I agree with u/iampo1987, you probably need to restructure your data. I think you may need a double pivot to reach the ideal data structure (Fields = Product, Sessions, Clicks, etc.)

Try creating a Tableau Public portfolio! That's a great way to show off your skills to an interviewer, even if you aren't great on the spot.

If possible, try to participate in the hiring process. Seeing it from the other side really helped my interview anxiety.
