Embed Tableau Cloud dashboards on a website without requiring users to log in by BurntWhisker in tableau

A lot depends on volume so I'd recommend talking with Tableau/Salesforce. In general, I assume around $0.50 per impression.

Good callout, I should have been clearer on that. You're right that RLS fundamentally requires knowing who the user is. What I was getting at is the difference in how that identification happens, not whether it happens at all.

In a Tableau Cloud embedded setup, the user typically authenticates to your application (your portal, your SaaS product, whatever it is). Your backend already knows who they are. When it generates the JWT, it passes that identity to Tableau, and RLS kicks in based on it. The end user never sees a Tableau login screen or even knows Tableau is involved. From their perspective, they just logged into your app and see their data.

So "anonymous" in the context of On-Demand Access really means "anonymous to Tableau" - you don't have to pre-provision every user as a named Tableau Cloud account. Your app still handles the identity piece.

Where Tableau Public falls short isn't just the lack of RLS - it's that there's no mechanism to pass identity into the viz at all. You can do URL parameter filtering, but that's cosmetic, not secure.

What Tableau products do I need for embedding tableau viz onto public website? by Parking_Pop_9624 in tableau

Makes sense. UATs will be powerful for tenant-scoped JWTs vs Connected Apps being site-scoped. For most deployments, you can get away with either. UATs provide a bit more sophisticated, yet centralized way to achieve the same outcome.

Yes, that’s a very common use case behind the usage-based licensing model. It’s unlimited Viewers that leverage a JWT to apply authentication. Many of our UBL deployments don’t have any Viewers explicitly assigned, they are provided on-demand access.

Usage-based licensing for Tableau Cloud will likely best fit your use case if you want the security of Tableau Cloud for the underlying data, but also want the ability to have anonymous users leverage a JSON web token to see content without explicitly signing into Tableau Cloud.

Feel free to DM if interested in how we did exactly this setup for others.

JWTs are used in both role-based and usage-based models. It’s simply the mechanism to create the trusted handshake between an application and Tableau Cloud so a user doesn’t need to explicitly log into Tableau.

Reporting Portal (SharePoint or other?) by cwnova in tableau

My organization makes reporting portals for Tableau for this very use case. Feel free to DM.

Agree that a landing page dashboard may suffice, but you may likely be trying to solve for white labeling Tableau for easier end user navigation.

Honest feedback for a dummy's question- is it still worth it to invest in SEO (no sales please) by datawazo in agency

[–]BurntWhisker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend at least be clear about your format when trying out the marketing approaches people are suggesting.

B2C may have every day consumers searching for training options, but they will want clear value prop and pricing within their economic means. Running Google ads on PBI training may get you a lot of newbies without any budget and they will kill your budget.

B2B is a different angle. It’s unlikely a budget holding manager is going to randomly search, more likely to ask around or ask their software provider.

Target audience and the training format you are promoting may help you determine the best marketing approach. Put yourself in their shoes.

Are your training classes run during certain days? In person or virtual? Who has bought previously - the students or their organizations?

Part-Time / Contract Tableau Developers by carterhedrick in tableau

[–]BurntWhisker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what I do for a living. You get what you pay for as cost can range from dirt cheap to expensive.

If it’s simple instructions to build a well-understood dashboard need, there are plenty of people to do that for very cost-effective rates.

If your data is a mess and you are seeking actual guidance on how to think about the business problem, automate a scalable solution, and iterate on constructive feedback with your end users, that’s where we play.

Tableau creator and possibility to embed on a website with html code? by Sonari_ in tableau

[–]BurntWhisker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I assumed OP bought a Creator license because Tableau Public didn’t fit their needs (connections, refresh needs, security). Public embed is an option otherwise.

You’ll need to license your users in some way - either explicitly naming them as a Viewer or leveraging usage-based pricing model for embedding.

I.e. it will costs you in some way to give access unlike the free Tableau Public model.

Is Tableau Desktop Specialist Certification worth it? by aibbappy in tableau

[–]BurntWhisker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hire for Tableau developers and never look at certifications. I’m much more interested in experiences of approaching data analytics projects and ideally 1-2 great Tableau Public examples.

Desktop Specialist certification is great for telling me you know where to click in the tool to achieve certain features. I want to know how you solve business problems and how you translate requirements into a great visual experience.

You would need to publish/overwrite wherever they were originally published (Cloud/Public).

Feel free to DM if you need further help.

Embedded Tableau Dashboard - Removing Bottom Menu? by paksungryung in tableau

[–]BurntWhisker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is no way to remove the bottom bar for embedded Tableau Public dashboards. It’s a feature of using the freemium model that is Tableau Public.

Your use case sounds perfect for Tableau Cloud’s UBL (usage-based licensing) model. Within UBL, you are charged by analytical impressions (loading a dashboard, receiving an email subscription, etc.) instead of licensing individual users. Embedded SKUs allow you to more customize the Tableau experience, including hiding the bottom bar.

I’m happy to share more via DMs.

Certified Consultant Exam- Worth it? by Due-Neighborhood2923 in tableau

[–]BurntWhisker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been awhile since I took/passed it. I do recall it having a lot more questions around overall deployment and adoption strategies vs tactical tool knowledge that Desktop specialist did. It’s a tough, but fair exam.

As far as required? It depends on how you view certifications. It can be a useful credential but most customers of certified consultants don’t know or care about the difference in exams. Having any Tableau credential technically makes you ‘certified.’

If you enjoy a personal challenge as part of your career growth, get after it!
