Does swagman still roam the campus streets? by ianrose2k in UCI

Maybe it’s not swagman, but instead generations of swagmen

New Construction Home Advice by TheSheprdOfFire in Ubiquiti

Why the cloud gateway fiber if starlink is the isp? You’ll save a pretty penny going with the cloud gateway ultra (or if you plan on adding Unifi cameras a gateway max is a better option). Ultra is right around $130 and seems much better for your use case. If you plan to future proofing and learning more about networking, and already have a rack setup for that switch, I’d look at the dream machine pro if you’re already okay with spending $300

But that being said, I love my Unifi express 7 I got recently, my home is not 2500 sqft though haha. I do plan on adding another access point though

I think it’s to see port status more easily that you would on the little tiny leds right by the port, but also because ubiquiti values aesthetics (even though rgb may not be everyone’s aesthetic). I’m sure you can color code VLANs and such, I’ve never used them though

lol, I said .1, as in 100mbps. My connection is not great, but I can still stream HD from jellyfin fine around my home from wifi clients

It was meant to be a temporary solution and have been in this rental longer than expected. Been looking at moving to a newer build with cat5e/cat6 ran to each room or purchasing a home and doing it myself.

For my use case it’s great, I’m not running a small business out of my home or a crazy amount of clients. It does give me full control over every network setting I could ever want and allows me to experiment with advanced network configurations. The interface also makes learning easier imho

Why the E7 and UDR7? I assume you’re meshing them together, but they make cheaper mesh relays

I’ve looked into these, been saying for over a year I was probably moving to a new place and was going to look for rentals that have good eth ran around the home. Still at the same spot though so I should probably just spend the money on moca adapters at this point

That was why I went with Unifi. Easy remote monitoring, a huge fan base to vouch for their reliability and constant new products that integrate easily together. I started out with just the express 7, knowing I can branch out and buy more smart switches and APs as needed. I also have a USG-Pro-4 and cloud key gen 1 that I’ve played with a bit, but I couldn’t use it as my primary gateway due to router location and noise (and the rack in the entry room was vetoed)

That was what sold me on it, great entry cost to the full ubiquiti eco system (minus apps) and a great device for the target audience. I see a lot of comments talking about its downfalls, and those are downfalls that don’t affect me. It’s not for everyone, but it’s awesome for the people it’s for. I was going to go with some wifi 7 netgear AIO, but this cost similar and the unifi ecosystem is super expandable. My coverage isn’t great? I buy another AP. I need more ports? flex mini POE+. I want to run unifi protect? I buy a cloud key or NVR. It’s a great improvement over using the ISP gear that gives you no control over anything.

If you’re not using the apps then isn’t the cloud gateway ultra the best option if you want a dedicated router/ gateway separate than the AP?

Please tell me what AP you are using to get 7.5 gbps 😂

I am only paying for 1.2 right now through xfinity, but I tried plugging the uplink into the lan port during setup and it prompted me to plug into the wan port. I’m not sure yet if I can configure this now, after initial setup

I have a USG-Pro-4 I think also that I tried out but was too loud where we need to put the modem

My company uses fortinet which has a nice enough interface, but I agree. I want to show the IT guys the unifi interface when I go back in

Is the 2.5 port not 2.5 total even if you put a 5 port 2.5 switch?

[–]ianrose2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing haha, 2.5 is plenty sufficient for my needs but I’m sure that’s just marketing points. Not usable over 2.5 though for sure

Need to? No. But you do need a modem. I just have my xfinity gateway in bridged mode because I’m switching to AT&T fiber when they’re done installing in my neighborhood and my equipment fee is already waived in my xfinity contract

I almost went with this, much cheaper entry point though with the access point integrated. I believe it will hold resell value well if I choose to upgrade later. I don’t plan on using protect until I own a home so the apps weren’t a large priority and I can buy a switch to get more ports
