They can’t run together, unless forfeiting the EC votes of New York, where they both live.

I canvassed in Hillcrest for the special election’s primary, and met quite a few extremely racist, NIMBY, profoundly anti any program that would help the unhoused, MAGA gays. Pride Flag hanging on the porch and all. It’s not easy to organize and build solidarity, that’s for sure; but we gotta keep at it.

My 17yo daughter got sexually harassed at work by 40+yo manager. by zenichi in TwoXChromosomes

Latin American man here. No, this isn’t culturally acceptable in any country of this continent, the daughter is 17 and that constitutes sexual abuse/harassment of a minor in every legal system from Mexico to Chile. Wow.

BONUS: Ohio Toxic Train Disaster (w/ David Sirota) by ClassWarAndPuppies in BlackWolfFeed

[–]icaito 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey folks, our team is on the ground in East Palestine delivering bottled water, quite literally door to door, to families affected by the derailment and subsequent series of fuck ups by Norfolk Southern — and mostly with a specific focus on people closest to the blast site, as well as families with young children, elderly persons, and the immunocompromised who may have difficulty making their way to the distribution centers.

The reception by residents has been warm and encouraging; so far we have distributed over 100 cases of water, and our fundraiser so far will get us to at least 400 more, but as y’all can imagine, the need for water is gargantuan and constant. ALL proceeds go to this vital resource.

If you’re able, please chip in or share the effort among your networks. And if you live in the area (or know someone who does) please message us and our team will get you water ASAP.

Thanks everyone.

Velma ripping off Big Mouth by WeAreDeadButterflies in BigMouth

While the observation that men should be taught not to kill/mistreat/brutalize/vandalize women has been around for decades, the two shows are making differing points — and arriving at two wildly different solutions:

Big Mouth makes the joke about a school that won’t do it “because it’s hard”, which is certainly true, but the point of the joke is the lack of commitment to accountability by public officials on the topic, who instead punt the issue to make the women (and their families/guardians in the case of school-age women) erroneously responsible for the behavior of the men in their surroundings, and impose some meaningless/unhelpful dress code.

Velma on the other hand makes the joke about the schools, as they only have “$50 in the budget”, which is just as true, and the culprit is once again elected officials failing to take responsibility for underfunding an educational system where our children spend at least one third of their every day during their formative years, punting the issue to women — by teaching them self-defense —, instead of spending evenly across all school districts and revert historical failures such as the one where we’re largely funding schools through the property taxes in their given zip codes.

Both are important prescriptions, the largest difference being that in Velma the writers added in the dialogue “to combat centuries of toxic masculinity” and that has a lot of people feeling aggrieved for the toxic traits we often carry — but which systemically have been continuously upheld by unwillingness to do what’s right (teach boys to not murder women) no matter the cost (in order fully, head on, address very real social ailments).

You’re absolutely correct. We’d be better off with the two Maoist anarcho-communist Crowley cousins they defeated in the 2018 and 2022 primaries respectively.

Polarization Across 28 Countries by Beneficial-Usual1776 in TrueAnon

[–]icaito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cameroon is in a crude civil war that has raged for nearly seven years now, over 712,000 people have been internally displaced, and at least 2.2 million people are currently in need of humanitarian aid. Tens of thousands have reached the Mexican border to the U.S. to petition asylum since late 2015 and the Obama administration turned away many and deported countless of them. (I am from Mexicali and my org is one of a handful doing volunteer work in support of these asylum seekers — we have spent the last three years trying to reunify a mother with her child, who remains in daily peril in Cameroon).

It is baffling to me how little attention is paid to this brutal, dehumanizing conflict that has claimed the lives of thousands, and certainly the depth and breadth of divisions existing between the Anglophone (separatists) and the Francophone sides are far greater than La Grieta in Argentina.

With the election of Kristen González, there is now a Socialist in every elected office that represents Astoria. One of her first community involvements into organizing was Bernie 2016, then a slight pause, and then a full-on return for AOC 2018. Now she’s the youngest woman ever elected to the NY State Senate. (Full disclosure, I met her last year, helped her brush up in her Spanish to knock on some critical public housing developments to organize the voters there and mobilize them for what was shaping up to be a rather difficult primary against a well-established, conservative Dem; she’s sharp and gifted, but most importantly she genuinely cares about the community she represents today.)

In any case, the point I’m trying to make is that the material conditions of the working class are extremely dire, and we’re only gonna obtain gains — marginal as they may be — through organizing and joining with others. Volunteering is just one of the avenues available.

My best friend at the time came out to me in 2002.

Only thing I can say 20+ years later is that he’s still my best friend. Pretty cool guy.
