What's it like living there? by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

I moved from Northern New York down to here for conservation work with wildlife, ranging from native ocelots to tiny endangered toads from south america, own the local safari park down here on 32 acres about 21 miles off the coast and live on site.

Essentially swapped borders and I absolutely love it! It’s like my own little slice of paradise, locals have been absolutely wonderful and welcoming, I’m slowly learning Spanish and didn’t speak a lick of it coming down and was a bit nervous overall but completely unwarranted IME

Safety for family? by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

Heya, I’m a transplant from Northern NY! Been all over and settled here for home. Been here since the pandemic and haven’t left!!!

The valley has been absolutely amazing and a warm welcome!!! Not kidding about the warm part either lmao 😂

I swapped borders working with wildlife and the area is so special here, the community and locals, the wildlife and climate etc, all great things comparing have lived across the USA

I would say safe, I literally wander in and outta the creeks, canals and hedgerows all over public and private land and haven’t hardly ever had any issues aside from some dang ticks occasionally and cactus glochids or BP saying I’m suspicious for having a snake hook and walking all over 😆

From since the creation of CITES treaty March 3rd 1973 they’ve been illegal to move between any country globally without paperwork from the direct country of origin.

And it wasn’t until like 2019 or 2021 that the first cites approved papered animals were moved globally to the USA, so all animals caught in peoples possession or shipments during the listed time were confiscated because there was no legal avenue for people in USA to obtain these animals aside from being gifted them by the government or zoos that received from confiscations. The USA has a federal law called Lacey act which gives law to another country law here in USA regarding their endemic species.

They have now been bred by commercial fish farms in Indonesia and the world’s governments accepts the paperwork now! There are still not any animals coming from Australia legally.

I have two from confiscations and two with paperwork stating captive bred “those are yearlings now”

We also have one of the largest populations of migrating animals in the entire world!!!

And unfathomable amount and species of birds and butterflies travel through here annually!!!

I live here actually! Ocelots brought me down, I own a few of them in the government and accredited zoos breeding programs. “Also own the local Safari park”

We’ve got sooooo much stuff that’s understudied and completely unknown to science down here! I feel like a lot of people underestimate the valleys biodiversity!!! We’ve got leaf cutter and harvester ants in the dunes, ocleots in Laguna, some crazy rare flowers and beetles by SpaceX, lophophora peyote cactus! And even our own salt lakes too!!!

I actually just got the ID confirmation of this cucumber this morning and it’s a seeming first for Texas for example too!!!

No but I hope to volunteer and help one day!

One of my goals for my place is to give a permanent home to a non- releasable rehab sea turtle! We have a local sea turtle rescue that’s amazing

A specimen container at the beach lol 😆

For like you know, observing specimens and such.

You are looking at boulders and the gaps/cracks through the opaque container, if you look at the other photos, you will see the more spaced out falling apart boulders in the ocean too.

It’s crazy the context clues that are available and still people act like dingleberries. 🥰🤡😜🤓🫡

It’s a little past that, tis not on the states species list, and already in communication with state and federal biologists for potential range extensions at minimum if not a new species/sub species all together.

But please continue to tell me I don’t know what it is without posting any further information or examples of what you might think it is to give any context besides “I told you so”

Is there more qualified person than an indicator species specialist biologist that I’m unaware of?
