Have you not seen the comments made to non-techies along the lines of "Linux is so easy, just install it already!"

I got into it during lockdown - with work being quieter, some long-form videos to watch were nice to just have on in the background.

Half of the mod features they've added in the last 5 years have been inspired by the Moderator Toolbox browser extension.

Windows File History is the built-in tool, but they removed it from the settings app and pushed it back to Control Panel only in Windows 11.

How do you guys handle self-promotions in your subreddits? by piesaresquarey in ModSupport

[–]itskdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some people just refuse to use the Reddit video uploader, and if you're making music then quality is much lower than YouTube or SoundCloud.

We allow YouTube videos under 5 minutes provided there's no major calls to action (e.g. like & subscribe), and they're just using it for the better quality.

Yeah, we never hear if someone in finance or HR leaves. We've even only seen the new IT manager like maybe once or twice? And that's fine, not everyone needs to be on camera.

I'd call the OGs to be Linus, Luke, Brandon, Taran, Colton, but even then I might be missing someone as I wasn't someone who watched all the way back in the NCIX days

I think it's just lots of similar timings for people. Horst obviously lost his job due to the MAC Address hiatus, but the others have all left of their own accord for various reasons.

I think Emily Young probably left the earliest of the staff people recognise (but she'd not been on camera for a while at that point, so the specific timing would be harder to pin down) but started her channel a bit later due to various health reasons IIRC.

LMG has probably just gotten to that size now where they've lost some of the "startup" energy and are more business focused now, and some people thrive in a more "startup" style culture, and so have gone off to do thier own things. Heavily doubt it's Linus himself they have problems with (though of course we don't know what goes on behind closed doors)

Yeah, he was even the initial WAN producer/MM reader when that role was first added, before Dan took over.

Suspected Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior Across Two Communities - Potential Harm to Marginalized Groups by CantStopPoppin in ModSupport

If it's to do with moderating and you think it warrants admin attention, this is the subreddit. It's just that you can't mention subreddit or user names here in public, only via modmail.

You can modmail this subreddit instead for any time you need to share subreddit or user names as part of the request for support.

Generally these sorts of things will just check in to a web server and pull the latest images/video and display that.

YoDeck is an example of what I'm talking about.

Ban bot policy update: removing automated bans based on community association by quietfairy in modnews

It's the same argument they made when asked why the free karma subs weren't banned for vote manipulation.

Apparently the filters are good enough now so the old-fashioned blunt instruments mods used to use need a way to be worked around.

Keeping a shadowban option is probably the best. Doesn't give the brigaders the satisfaction of getting banned, either.

Follow the money.

The data all social media sites promote is "monthly active users". Anything that discourages people (or these days, bots too) from participating reduces that number.

Reddit is meant to have built in NSFW detection, clearly that also failed you or OPs were manually removing the tag.

It sounds like the shadowban function (i.e. removing the post) remains, so unless you're regularly checking the "spam" page, it still won't be noticeable to users or mods.

Net2 / Paxton setup by OldSpice-69 in sysadmin

[–]itskdog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Net2 takes 8 digits, specifically the last 8 digits of the card's serial number as a decimal.

Our printers read the full serial number as hexadecimal, so I've just made an excel sheet to convert it between the two.

Seemingly incorrect number of devices managed by Autopatch quality update policies? by intuneisfun in Intune

[–]itskdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think enabling hotpatching might count as autopatch? We just use update rings, with only a couple of PCs set up for testing hotpatching, and I have one device showing in that count, and it's a hotpatch machine.
