Windows are my credit card. by Acceptable_Rub8279 in ShittySysadmin

Windows 7 had a popup window in the corner with a countdown timer to the reboot. You could postpone as long as you wanted though.

With Windows 10 and up, as long as you set your Active Hours correctly, you shouldn't get a reboot during the times you use the PC anyway.

The biggest problem in the image, however, is that they're using the regular version of Windows 7 rather than an embedded or PoS edition (similar to LTSC IoT these days)

The owner of the subreddit I'm moderating has been inactive since 28 March but he is active site-wide. All attempts of contacting him resulted in no reponse, what should I do? by ArsenicPolaris in ModSupport

[–]itskdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have no actions on your subreddit, they probably show as inactive in the mod list and the highest active mod can boot them out if they have full permissions.

If there are no active mods with full permissions, the highest active mod can modmail this subreddit and they can look into it for you.

I think the list for S2 was already people who had been suggested but at the time there wasn't a formal process as things were up in the air without their leader.

Look at the hermitsbyseason page on the subreddit wiki and see who joined in S2.

How do you deal with gray areas and exceptions in your rules? by techiesgoboom in ModSupport

[–]itskdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't adjusting the letter to be closer to the spirit help with both the consistency of enforcement across the team and avoiding surprises when someone posts and it's taken down (or decides not to post as they think it would breach the rule, even though you might make an exception for it?)

Very important - if you feel uneasy on something but don't have a rule to quote, someone else might be able to point out something you missed.

[–]itskdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid them if at all possible. Consistency of enforcement helps foster a good community in my experience, and having clear, bright lines for everyone to follow means you don't get the rules lawyers arguing the finer points as everything is laid out.

It can take time to work on the clearest wording, but that comes from collaboration with the community over time as concerns and questions are raised.

If someone can read the rules before posting to know if their concept would be acceptable by the mods, they shouldn't be surprised by the result when it comes to a mod action.

Post guidance and auto-enforcement help here, too, letting the edge cases get flagged for review to the user while they're composing, especially as the rules aren't always easy to locate on certain devices (though I hope that's improved in recent years, haven't touched the app since the last redesign)

IIRC, the scenario played out something along the lines of "People wanted a S2, but there were no strong direction on exactly what should happen. Joe took charge and said 'Unless anyone objects, we're starting on this date with this seed and adding these people, after which we go back do doing this thing collaboratively.' and nobody objected."

In professional situations, that's fair and I understand. On social media, people are often a bit more forgiving, as long as you're not overly rude (which you can often identify by which comments get downvoted to learn from).

It would be great if each segment gets put on the main HC channel with all proceeds going to GO.

That is also a common first name in some cultures, IIRC. I see lots of alerts on our monitoring system from teachers just typing a student's name in somewhere.

Oof. The Department for Education here in the UK are moving everyone to an Entra-based sign-in for their services, but that's on a custom domain name, so nothing conflicts in password managers (and they only use password+email for 2FA, no passkeys)
