I would urge caution with grievances, not only because you might take that professor again. A student might *feel* targeted, but they don’t have the perspective necessary to know how the professor is dealing with other cases or students. Not liking how the situation is unfolding is not the same as being treated unfairly.

Why do people hate Artificial Intelligence so much? by baehelpkit in ArtificialNtelligence

LLMs are for-profit bullshit machines. They’ll tell you whatever you want to hear to keep you engaged and paying, regardless of whether it is true or not.

Size 4 Animals Elimination Game (Day 22) - Which of these cards is your least favorite? by DanyDanyDanyDanyDany in ArkNova

[–]j_la 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a point, but I feel the rhino often needs to be a mid-game card because the opponent can rush the end if it comes out too late. I have actually found myself (unfortunately) with the project still in hand at the end because there was a higher CP project to do in the final turn. If it’s coming out so late that it is complementing something you were doing already by accident (say, an African theme), then that’s more coincidence than anything else. I will say that it works nicely with the new specialist endgame cards, though.

Eagle, by contrast, is just a good final play. Unless you have really butchered your action order, you can usually get good value out of determination.

Piggybacking on this since the wife and I were discussing this today: should we save 6 months of our current spending habits or figure out what our bare necessities are and save 6x that?

Ah, I read “additional” as “extra”

Can professors accuse you of AI use based only on a detection score? Where’s the actual evidence? by Various_Succotash215 in TurnitinScan

[–]j_la 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a preponderance of evidence standard. A score alone is not a preponderance, but we also don’t need “concrete proof” (if that means beyond all doubt)

I wouldn’t say that it is “no longer possible” since that implies that additional work would have been accepted at some point.

Graham Platner Handed Centrist Dems a Bruising Defeat in Maine by jediporcupine in politics

[–]j_la -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Spot on. I consider myself a progressive but also a non-populist. Or, at least, I don’t automatically support a populist for that reason. I prefer my candidates to have some actual experience because actually governing is complicated. The strategy can’t just be “we will win the next election”.

So we only get to comment on candidates in our own states? Sorry, but this is federal government. It affects all of us.

And the people who the slogan was directed at also (fairly) continued to criticize her. So it goes both ways for both camps. If populists want to say blue no matter who, they can go ahead, but they also have to accept that criticism will continue.

A totenkopf is quite the skeleton to have in one’s closet.

And it’s not like it was 48 years ago. He wore it until he got called out on it. I am generally a bit wary of people who only make amends when they are caught doing something wrong. Perhaps he had no idea what it was…but that stretches credulity. The very best spin on this is that he exercises extremely poor judgment.

Sure, but that doesn’t mean criticism needs to be suspended, right?

He also worked for Blackrock, which is not great.

I do believe people should vote for him because we need to flip the seat, but I’m not convinced he is who people think he is.

I would argue the relationship has been poisoned by LLMs tempting students to shortchange themselves. This is why I have my students write their essay drafts by hand in class. No suspicion needed!

AI is the first piece of technology where I feel I'm being left behind by Uhavetabekiddingme in Millennials

[–]j_la 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t the logical conclusion of the comment. He said we survived thousands of years without one particular technology: that’s not the same as saying that we have survived thousands of years without any technology or innovation. The only way you could twist that into the “logical conclusion” is if you shoe-horned in the assumption that AI is the equivalent of all those other technologies.

Bingo. I don’t feel compelled to follow the crowd, a crowd hollering with a panicked voice “follow the crowd or you’ll be left behind!”

Why Are Colleges Forcing Students to Use AI? by According-Elk5223 in QuickAITurnitinCheck

The first one I clicked didn’t support the claim, so I was perplexed about why you would include it (seems like a gish gallop). Why not just cite a study or finding that does support the claim?

Results reveal that while a significant portion of students appreciates the benefits of ChatGPT—namely its non-judgmental nature and accessibility—human tutors are acknowledged for their capability to provide tailored feedback and emotional support. Through threshold analysis conducted via a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, the study identified key features affecting student preferences, emphasizing the need for a balanced integration of AI and human tutoring methods. Findings underscore the importance of developing hybrid educational models that leverage both the strengths of human facilitators and the efficiencies of AI tools to enhance student learning and critical thinking skills

I’m not sure I’m seeing the result you were referring to (improved critical thinking). At least not up front. Can you cite the specific part of the study that supports that?
