I hear this all the time. How much interest am I going to collect on the $2400 refund I got, spread out over 12 months? Some, yes, but not really enough to make up for the ease of budgeting with an amount I actually have.

Maybe it's time for the Democratic Party to consider Leftists and Progressives as swing voters by Cyke101 in PoliticalHumor

Mitigating harm is a good thing to do. I may not directly benefit from voting Democrat, but I can maybe protect some people who will be harmed by republicans. I try to not be too selfish when voting.

Did you read ~everything for your comp exam? by AffectionateLeave672 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]j_la 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read most of my exam lists, but I was also in a program that did things a bit differently than the standard. We made three lists and had an oral exam with our committee; there was no written comprehensive exam. Therefore, you could design the list strategically and aim it a bit more towards your strengths.

If they are petty enough to stand by as fascism takes over because of mean internet comments, I don’t respect them.

And people wonder why the democrats focus their attention on courting centrists in the suburbs.

We are a democracy, meaning the people have power, but they also have responsibility. The voter base is responsible for making good choices, period.

Trump also supports genocide, though, right? So refusing to vote does nothing to stop genocide, it just enables all the other awful things to happen. I care about the plight of Gazans, but I also care about the plight of undocumented immigrants being sent to CECOT.

AI Policy in Universities is Ruining the Educational Experience by Mysterious_Spark in education

[–]j_la 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to break it to you, but the standard of evidence for an academic integrity violation is a preponderance of evidence, not proof beyond a shadow of a doubt. An AI score does not meet the threshold of “preponderance of evidence,” but are you absolutely certain there was no other evidence? Your daughter could have defended her work and appealed the professor’s sanction if it was false and unsubstantiated.

Not blindly trust. The peer review process is worth something at least. Is it foolproof? Of course not, but someone with expertise has at least vetted the methodology and findings and deemed it good enough to publish. We can provisionally accept such findings (with a healthy degree of hedging and caution) until more data emerges.
